Where I grew up, boundaries between farm fields were "dry stone dykes" - hand-built from the many stones of the arable land. Never an expert drystone dyker myself, I did learn how to select, size and slot together the rocks so that the wall would hold strong. How stones of all sizes and ages can support and protect each other, shouldering each other's weight skywards. This is a poem about strength, about love, about solidarity. It's about building a border ambivalently, shifting and holding and questioning boundaries. It's about protection and estrangement, about making structural fixes to an enclosure decided by the distant dead. It is about grief, about love without hierarchy. It is about stony roots and exposed routes. Resentment, rage, and repair. The remembered advice from the kindest and cruelest people you know. Whether picking rocks for the base and ridges of a dyke, or packing boxes into another truck for yet another midnight escape from another home gone wrong. Build, block, brace. "Take all this chaos, and make something of it". It is about the history underfoot, and the heaviness in our hands. Various dry stone work throughout Angus over the last couple of months. We moved to Scotland fairly recently. Here's a few jobs I've been doing. From gardens and estates to field and farm. Yesterday was more, "this girl cannae" cope with the heat! Today this girl definitely could! Day 2 weather conditions were much more favourable for this peely wally Scot so I was buzzing for today's build. Pretty sure the young bulls were questioning our ability to get the 8 metre wall completed but we finished the 1st lift, through stones, 2nd lift, cover band and copes with over an hour to spare 💪 Loved every minute (bar the couple finger trappings) of the beginner dry stone walling course with @dswa_gb and @drystone_perthshire . Back this week after 9 days on St Kilda. Jason Hoffman and I were working for the National Trust of Scotland alongside the island’s archaeologist. The island is covered in an abundance of stone structures made from mostly granite and some dolerite from the west side. There’s hundreds of metres of boundary walls, consumption walls, black houses, enclosures, a beautiful circular cemetery wall and over 1200 cleits. Cleits are a bit like a stone ‘hut’ used for storage. Inside they are corbelled with a lintel roof and on the outside they have a looser random skin of stone with a turf roof. While we were there we repaired a black house wall, 3 Cleits and a cairn like stone structure. The repair work is unlike anything we’d done before. It had to be largely rebuilt ‘stone for stone’ using photographs as a reference. On Saturday, day 1 of the dry stone walling course with 7 men, I have read a page from ''The power of Now'' book, that extremely strongly resonated with me. Because this was me.... Eckhart Tolle spoke about our identification with our pain body and then particularly about women. All this accumulated pain awakens from its dormancy especially during menstrual flow. Some women are conciouss enough not to identify with their personal pain body however there still can be a COLLECTIVE pain body that consists of pain suffered by women partly through male subjugation of the female ( slavery, rape, childbirth, child loss etc.) '' If women exclude themselves from men, that fosters a sense of separation and therefore a strenghtening of the ego. And the stronger the ego, the more distant you are from your true nature.'' This was really a very destined weekend :) I have started a very easeful bleed on Monday, which is a special thing. ah, shetland. check out our latest blog post ‘wwoofing + dyking + bird attacks in the middle of nowhere’ (link in bio) to read a little bit of a retrospective about our time @wwoofuk -ing on papa stour in shetland. we spent a few months roaming about scotland this summer, working on various woodlands and farms, and our first was robinas hurdiback, a croft in shetland. it was an interesting study in the beginnings of things – the owner of the croft had decided just months before we arrived there that he wanted to work the land. so a lot of what we did was preparatory work, building and repairing walls, making raised beds, and collecting seaweed to make fertiliser. it was musing on what we might do with our little bit of the urban shared garden behind our building that led to this dive into the recent past. a similar sort of beginning. our time in shetland was massively memorable, we tell stories about it all the time. I hope you’ll enjoy having a read about it… ‘The island of Papa Stour is properly gorgeous. For most of the dozen days we spent there it was very grey and quite cold despite it being mid-July. But the days were long— we often went for walks after dinner, losing track of time because it stayed light until eleven— and when the sun did shine the entire island lit up. There are such glorious landmarks as Kirstan’s Hole, a literal actual giant hole in the ground opening up into the sea crashing against giant rocks far, far below, and New Kirstan’s Hole, which is also a giant hole in the ground but is new. Periods of Covid isolation and having to say goodbye to my mum have put stonework on the back- burner for parts of this year. A classic winter job… When the digger arrives on the farm and I start digging out ditches you know winter has arrived for sure. I spent my day yesterday sludging out a ditch along the side of an 18 acre field and from the before and after photos you can really see the difference. The ditch was full of weeds and leaves from the hedge above it which combined together we’re doing a great job of holding up the water flow away from the pipes that drain the field. Once I’d been through though, the ditch was clear, the water was flowing away nicely and the pipe ends were clean, allowing a field that can stand wet, the chance to dry up following a damp few weeks.
