💓 Rufus Update 💓 I wanted to share with everyone some updates on our perfect boy, Rufus. Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, Rufus' bloodwork results came back positive for Circovirus & PRRS. Thankfully he is negative for Mycoplasma. These are very common diseases at pig "production" facilities and almost all pigs coming from places like this will have one or multiple of these diseases. We have been preparing for this for a long time. It is why we have large alleyways between each pasture and why Rufus has been under such strict quarantine since he arrived. The good news is that Rufus is otherwise showing no symptoms of being sick. It's possible he's just a carrier but is actually immune to the illnesses. The plan is to run bloodwork again in 3 weeks and then 3 months and make sure that his numbers are going down. Our hope is that he will be completely negative at the 3 month checkup. The bad news is that this means Rufus will never be with our current small pig herd. These diseases are dangerous for smaller pigs and we won't risk exposing them. We will be starting a big pig herd for Rufus so that he's not alone. This will take a while to do safely but it's worth it in the end. He will be quarantined until he's testing negative and whatever new big pigs we intake will go through a full quarantine process also. Rufus can still live a long and happy life. We will be accepting more truck jumpers in the future and by then, Rufus will be ready and waiting for his new piggy family. We also need to fundraise for Rufus' new shed. Since he can't join our other pigs, we had to order him his own shed. The cost of this is $1,000. We have covered $600 to get it started and are hoping to raise the $400 remaining by June 16th. Paulina, Priscilla, and Panda had their hooves done yesterday! They did so well for the whole process and they're feeling like whole new ladies now 🐷💓 The scariest part for them was surprisingly the blankets! Before their appointment, we had to strip their shed of any hay or shavings. The reason for this is that they have to fast from everything edible for 2 hours before their appointment or they could aspirate during the hoof trim. We put blankets down in the shed for them during this time, and the girls had a very strong reaction to them. They were terrified to go near them. 😥 After some time to acclimate, they eventually realized that the blankets weren't that scary and got cozied up on them while waiting for their nail appointment. I'm not sure what caused such a strong reaction, but I'm happy they overcame their fear and finally got to feel the softness of cuddling up on blankets. 🤍 These girls have been through a lot in their lives. We are so happy to provide them a safe home with regular maintenance and care, like hoof trims. They're already walking more comfortably and they're happy to have shavings and straw back in their shed 😉 #eatfigsnotpigs

Happy Thursday from our joyful little boy 😍💖 Rufus is doing great! His abscess is draining & healing up nicely. He got a new pool today and some new toys, so he's very happy. 💖 Rufus Vet Update 💖 Rufus saw the vet today! He was a very, very good boy for our kind and compassionate vet. He had his blood drawn for testing and he had his lumps checked out. The reason Rufus has lumps on his chest is because of the trauma from jumping out of the transport truck. When he hit the ground, this caused a hematoma. The hematoma filled up with blood and it turned into an abscess. He developed a lot of scar tissue there, as well. This is actually really good news because it's nothing life-threatening nor will he need surgery! The vet drained the abscess and said that we could have the rest of the scar tissue removed if we wanted, but it would only be for cosmetic reasons. I'm not going to risk putting Rufus through surgery just for looks, so he will continue to have lumps on his chest and that's just fine with me ☺️ They honestly already look smaller just from being drained. He's settling in very well and we are so in love with him. He's got the best personality, just look at his smile 😍 So relieved that everything went smoothly today and his prognosis is good. He's our lumpy boy and we adore him! ❤️ The vet bill was already covered by generous donations, but I attached it for transparency. Thanks for all the support for our sweet Rufus. 🐽 #eatfigsnotpigs
❤️ The babies have arrived !! ❤️ All four piggies have arrived safely! I cannot even express how in love we are with these beautiful souls 😍 Bo, Gertie, and Julianna were so happy exploring their new home, munching on grass, and smelling all the new smells. They are all very sweet and loving. They were very happy to eat dinner and we have been doting on them with lots of snacks 🥰 Rufus is pure perfection. I am absolutely head over heels in love with this small guy. He loves running through the grass and having his belly rubbed ☺️ He enthusiastically ate all his snacks and his dinner, he's such a good boy! We are soaking up every second with our newest babies. 🚨 Urgent Rescue Update 🚨 *TW graphic photo in last slide* Our babies are free!! 🥹 All three pigs are out of the hoarder's property and into their loving foster home, where they finally can touch grass and be with one another again ❤️ But they are not out of the woods yet. They will be going to the vet to start the process of spaying and neutering, vaccines, deworming, microchipping, and getting health certificates for travel. There's also some health concerns that need to be addressed, like suspected mange, low body scores, and potential complications from breeding. (see last photo) These poor souls were left in concrete cages with no vet care and not enough food or water. We will be working closely with our trusted vet to address these issues and provide the care that is needed. @blind_spot_animal_sanctuary_ has graciously offered to help fundraise for initial vet care while we fundraise for transportation. This is a huge undertaking and we really need your help! We have raised $175 out of the $2,000 needed to get them safely to us. 💕 They will be transported by a loving and trusted transportation service that works with sanctuaries. I didn’t know it was a thing but apparently today is World Pig Day ❤️ I couldn’t let it pass without giving a shoutout to my favourite duo. I grew up spending a lot of time on a friends farm/homestead and my eyes were very open to the reality of where food comes from. And as a kid decided my friends would not ever be put on my plate. I’ve been the eye roll of family and friends most my life and I know it’s a heated topic. But I love all animals…very very much. Pigs (I’m going to cry) are amazing. They are sweet, stubborn and incredibly smart. They just want to live, eat and get belly rubs. They don’t deserve to be a number and then an item at the grocery store. Why are dogs pets and pigs products? The only difference is our perception and oh how I wish everyone could befriend a pig. Happy pig day. Calvin & Hobbes are home from surgery 🥳 They did so well. They were perfect gentleman for the car ride to the vet. When we arrived, Dr. Cathy was ready and waiting for them. They each weigh 23 lbs. Everyone there loved them and commented on how sweet they are. I got the call that they were done within a few hours, and I was able to pick them up even earlier than I expected. They each got their vaccines and microchips, as well as being neutered. I'm so happy for 2 more successful pig surgeries. I'm always stressed leaving any of my animals at the vet, especially for anesthesia. I wish I could be a fly on the wall. But I know they're in good hands with Dr. Cathy, who comes highly recommend by my mentor, Alesja. Thanks to everyone who reached out and offered their love and support for Calvin & Hobbes big day!
