📍K'gari (Fraser Island), QLD How we spent 6 days on K'gari - the world heritage listed, largest sand island in the world: 1️⃣ Drove to inskip point and barge across to island. ⛺️ Beach camping zone 1 Govi 2️⃣ Headed inland on the Southern Lakes Scenic Drive to see Lake Boomanjin, Lake Birrabeen and Lake McKenzie. Drove back to beach via Lake Wabby. ⛺️ Beach camping zone 2 Gabala 3️⃣ Quick visit to Happy Valley. Drove along eastern coastline to see Eli Creek, Maheno wreck, the Pinnacles, Red Canyon and Champagne Pools. ⛺️ Beach camping zone 8 Duling (for remainder of trip) 4️⃣ Checked out Waddy Point, Orchid Beach and Ocean Lake. M did some beach fishing. 5️⃣ Drove through Ngkala Rocks to see Sandy Cape and visit the lighthouse. 6️⃣ Drove down eastern coast to catch the barge back to inskip point. While this was the third visit to K'gari for both of us, we continue to be amazed with the island and how diverse it is. A bucket list item of driving along 75 Mile beach has been ticked off. The beach acts as the main highway and we reach speeds of 100kmph. It has the same rules as the road, sort of... Keep to the left, don't break the speed limit and don't go too close to the sea. Oh and it doubles up as a runway. It's a bit of a strange experience getting flagged down because a plane is coming in to land then following it in as it taxi's. We stopped at Eli Creek which was even more surreal. A chill out spot on the beach with people swimming and inflatables, next to a car park with people playing volleyball between the cars, with an airstrip in the back ground and cars whizzing past. Took a day trip to K'gari (Fraser Island). I got lucky with an awesome tour in Land Rover Discovery, so got to enjoy all the highlights of the island without getting stuck. Past the dock everything is sand roads, very rough and very bumpy. 🚙 A very fun and very long day, "Aussie Adventure". We started hitchhiking thinking about going to the other part of the island but not knowing how to get back in case we found someone to take us (walking around is 10 hours through the jungle). But we were lucky enough that Brent and his two sons Jet and Xavier picked us up. And not only that, but they invited us to spend the day touring the island with them. We can only give infinite thanks for this Aussie adventure to everyone who shared that day with us, it was wonderful even with the traffic jam 😅. 📍Fraser Island. There are so many beautiful parts of this island to see. We visited the Sandy Cape, had a successful fish along this part of the coast catching flathead and bream using lures and beach worms. Champagne Pools, Lake McKenzie and Eli creek are all an absolute must to visit. Jungle Perch can be found in Eli creek which is an amazing site to see if you have an interest in fish. It’s highly recommended to have a 4x4 to access and explore Fraser Island but you are able to cross the ferry via Harvey Bay side and drive around KingFisher Resort in a 2 wheel drive and get a tour bus from there. There are two barge accesses that cross from Rainbow Beach & Harvey Bay. Prices vary pending on vehicles. Camping is very cheap! Be very aware of the dingos. Do not interact with or feed them, penalty’s do apply if you are caught doing so.
