She’s had a lot of irritation with debris getting in it so it was best to just take what little eye she had out and close it up. Today we attended a scheduled prosthetic eye appointment. Ava didn’t have a new eye today but we left feeling very positive and happy we have a plan in place. So as you all know Ava’s prosthetic eye has never fitted well. Her prosthetic keeps dropping in to her lower socket, bulging forward, continually getting ulcers and an inflamed socket. The prosthetic nurse now believes Ava has some kind of tissue which has formed in the healing process after the enucleation which is in between her implant and eye lid therefore blocking the prosthetic fitting and sitting in the correct place. Her consultant and prosthetic nurse are going to book her a theatre slot to take a good look inside, if that is the case they will snip anything that shouldn’t be there and put a clear conformer in while it heels so nothing reattaches and take a mould. I have attached some pictures to try show what all this means including a side on view of Ava’s prosthetic bulging forward. Day 2 of our 3 days of National Volunteer Week is in the books! Since today was added last minute to accommodate a retail schedule 😉 to our happy surprise, it wasn't just a @mattressfirm employee and her husband, but a City National Bank employee and his son! After the never-ending job of cleaning stalls, we decided to thank the son for all his hard work by letting him hop on Stevie and walk around ❤️. Jennifer from MF used to train horses, and her husband was a bull rider. When would there be a better time to see if Cannoli was ready for a human? Roseann has done an incredible job working with him being saddled, and it's easy to forget he used to do anything he could to get away. He let us know he wasn't ready for that yet. Now, we get to keep working on adding slow pressure and determine if we're still dealing with back pain or a learned fear behavior expecting pain (that's most likely). Socket update. We took Ava’s eye out this afternoon. It’s been in for 4 days and it’s time for her socket to have a break. I definitely think the new drops are working but maybe not quite as quick as I was hoping. Ava is living her best life in her newly decorated play room. Unfortunately I’m not enjoying her drawing all over her new table 🤦🏼♀️🥴 Ava has also been attending some of her favourite playgroups and especially enjoyed making jam and chocolate fish shaped sandwiches today. We are now a week in to her 6 week course of antibiotics, steroids and gunk dissolver drops and I can definitely see a difference already. There has been less discharge. Yay Stevie Wonder!!! His eyes are completely healed, and he is feeling better than ever. He went out for a short bareback walk around the property, and he was as happy as could be. He was bopping along and enjoying life ❤️ Boo, on the other hand, had to work instead of graze (I know, we're so mean lol). He's much happier in the side pull, but he was still looking for the bit to hang on from time to time. He wasn't dropping his head between his legs trying to avoid the bit. Makenna (@makennasky21) trotted him around both directions for a decent amount of time and really got to feel how incredibly smooth he is! For 2 horses bought at separate auctions, and neither one purchased for more than $350, we couldn't be prouder of these two ❤️❤️ (always remember: the purchase price is the cheapest part of horses. So Ava has taken her eye out AGAIN. One positive it’s been in for about 8 days which must be a record for her. Any other fellow RB parents find their child’s socket is constantly flaring up? Stevie Wonder got his stitches removed today, and his eyes are looking GREAT! Doc told us to expect another week or two of the left eye socket draining (that was always the worst eye). The right socket has been perfect since day one. He loads like a champ. About 2-3 steps out, he starts doing his version of the Spanish Walk to find the trailer LOL! He's happily eating with Willy and Wonky, and all three are as happy as can be ❤️ Wonky also wanted to show off how much weight he's lost! His left eye is doing much better 😍 He's on his last day of antibiotics, and hopefully, his eye won't need daily cleaning soon. Oh Stevie. His right eye socket looks INCREDIBLE! It's healing nicely and hasn't had any oozing as expected. That's probably because everything is going on with his left eye socket 😢 Yesterday, as we were changing bandages, we noticed a strong and very bad smell as the left protective cup was removed. He has developed an infection in that socket. Dr Meyer came and removed a couple of stitches to allow for better drainage, and we're going to flush the socket twice a day until things get better. Other than that, Stevie Wonder is doing wonderful! He's bright and perky and pushing his donkeys around the pen. He also hasn't cribbed since the surgery. He's always been a happy and friendly guy, but We are still about $1200 short of what we need for his surgery. We're aiming for $1500 to cover all the extras. We really need your help! We have over 1400 followers. If everyone donated even $2, we'd surpass our goal. You can't even get a gas station coffee for two dollars. A couple of years ago, Churro was sent an AWESOME sleep sack sort of dog bed. Recently I put it on the giant dog bed, trying to lure doggies into it - it’s a fantastic bed and the cats have it figured out but these are dogs who like to burrow - how are they not in this thing at all times??? Let's not forget about Cannoli! He gets worked and played with almost daily, but we always forget to take photos. Roseann has been really working on desensitization, and he now stands quietly when a saddle is going on or coming off! He doesn't even care when something goes under his belly anymore!! She's even worked on the mounting block with him. Mounting is normally done on his blind side, so we don't know how much he's really getting from that lol. Yesterday was fascinating to watch, and Stevie's life will be better than ever! Although his eyes were less swollen yesterday morning, there was a new, very large ulcer on one of his eyes. Dr. Meyer did an eye pressure test, and poor Stevie was over double what he should've been. The normal range for horses eye pressure is 20-30 mm Hg. Stevie was 48 on his "good" eye and 53 on his left eye. He had severe glaucoma, and his lens were completely frosted over. Despite a lot of nerve blocks, he still showed signs of feeling, so the decision was made to knock him out and lay him down. That normally bumps the price up and why we always try to raise extra. Our incredible vet donated the extra and charged us less than the estimate! When does THAT ever happen!?! We've raised $1250, but still need to get the rest. Even a dollar helps. The surgery was over at 4:30, but it took Stevie another 3 hours to wake up enough to go home. His donkeys and Boo were all waiting impatiently for his return. Interestingly, every horse in the barn started licking and chewing. The surgery was fascinating but could be considered gory. It makes complete sense why they call it a "hamburger surgery." Ava was back in Birmingham yesterday to see the RB team for an eye exam under anaesthetic. You think by now it would be a little easier leaving your little one sleeping on the theatre bed. Great news tho all is looking good from the exam on her health eye but her socket is very inflamed so Ava’s consultant has prescribed her a 6 week dose of steroid. Fingers crossed that will help. It was a very long day as Ava didn’t sleep much the night before so she was super tired and hungry. Not a great combo. But overall a successful trip. My little boy is home after successful neutering and enucleation 8 days ago ❤️. His irreversibly damaged eye had started developing fissures and scar tissue and it started to look like it was popping out of his head. The fact that he enjoyed rough play didn’t help assuage my anxiety. With the removal of the damaged eye, I now have one less thing to worry about. The little guy is recovering well, thanks to the capable and caring vets and staff of @healingpetsamc. Within 10 minutes of coming home, Pringles started wrestling and roughhousing with the others as if he had several good eyes to spare 🙄 It’s like he never left. Back to corridor 6 but this time we had GOOD NEWS! Ava’s appointment went well. The orange dye showed her ulcer had healed. Her doctor advised that her antibiotics can come down to 4 a day instead of every 2 hours for another week. Friday we need to start putting her prosthetic back in but just for 4 hours and build it up each day until she can tolerate to wear it 24 hours per day again. Back to corridor 6 but finally we got some answers today on what’s going on with Ava’s eye socket. She has an ulcer which can be seen when the blue light shines on her socket, it’s the bright light in the middle. Ava is on her 3rd lot of antibiotics but this time our Dr gave us a stronger dose and wants us to administer them every 2 hours for 7 days. He also advised against putting her prosthetic back in till the ulcer heals otherwise she can’t get fitted for a new one in 2 weeks. Dr believes the cause of the ulcer is to do with a poorly fitting prosthetic 😔. So we spent our Valentine’s Day at a hospital appointment. Over the weekend Ava’s eye socket became very inflamed and she had a small yellow mass on it. As you can imagine this was a big worry for us. After many phone calls with 111, our local hospital and the RB team we finally got an appointment 5 days after I initially expressed concern. Unfortunately the Dr was unable to tell us what is causing Ava’s eye socket to look the way it does. After examining it they think it could be an infection or maybe a cyst. They have taken swabs to send off to the lab and sent us home with 5 days worth of antibiotics drops. The vet assures us he really did a thorough removal of everything back there, but did warn us that she will definitely have a bit of a cave in as things really heal and settle. It’s been exactly one year since Mama Kelly had her eye removed. When we first rescued her June 2022, she wasn’t indicating that she was in pain and there was no active infection in the eye, so the vet suggested we leave it alone. He said the scarring was likely from a prior herpes flare that caused swelling in the eye, and she had little to no sight in it. Last January, the eye randomly ulcerated and we had no choice but to remove it. It was a stressful time, and we had to separate her from her kiddos and sacrifice our primary bathroom for a couple weeks to provide a quiet place to heal, with easy access so I could administer her medications 3x a day. But WOW did Kelly’s entire personality blossom once she healed. It’s clear she in fact was in some discomfort, but cats mask their pain well, and since we didn’t know her before the eye scarring, we had no baseline. She now plays, she loves cuddles, and her energy levels are way higher, even with her respiratory issues (caused by her anatomy- she has a scrunched nose that behaves almost like a pug or bulldog, plus some extra tissue in her larynx, so she wheezes a bit). She also loves having her eye socket rubbed, which is a little disconcerting to some but think of all the times your eye itches or you have a headache and gosh if only your eyeball wasn’t there so you could access that pressure point easier! 🤣 Anyway here’s a compilation showing her progress: pre-ulceration, ulceration, day of enucleation, 1 week after, 2 weeks after (before and after having her stitches removed), 1 month after, 6 months after, and in the center is current- 1 year after. Today Ava had an appointment in Birmingham for an Exam Under Anaesthetic. Ava really didn’t like having the drops to dilate her eye and it took us a while to calm her down afterwards. Following the exam it was GOOD NEWS: her socket has healed up nicely and her remaining eye is still healthy. The genetic testing results have still not come back. The RB team are going to liaise with her Prosthetics Consultant to see if they are happy for them to take a mould of her socket at her next EUA in March/April. We found out today Ava has a deep under eye socket which explains why her eye is moving a lot so a better fitting eye would prevent this. Emma the Play Therapist gave us some tips to get Ava used to cleaning and taking her eye out. Fingers crossed they work. As we had to travel up the day before, we kept Ava distracted by taking her to Sea Life. The Eye Post: warning graphic photos! These are in chronological order. I realized when Rory had her eye out, that I hadn’t made a post about it for the Grid and people weren’t sure why I had the eye removed. So I figured I should share. About 10 days after Rory’s vaccine reaction in September, she came in from the field with a puffy eye. The next day, it was blue. Like, BLUE. I had heard this, seen photos, but honestly never seen it happen in real life. I consulted my vet immediately and I picked up meds from her office and she came out the next day to see it. Rory’s pressures were normal and symmetrical and her stain was fine, so she was diagnosed with non-ulcerative keratitis and put on steroids. The steroids immediately helped. Her eye went back to mostly normal, except for a tiny sliver of blue. Two weeks after stopping the steroid treatment, her eye turned blue again. And again, it was extremely dramatic, and this time, it had a point to the fluid accumulating on or in her cornea (please don’t ask me to describe eye anatomy, I’m very bad at it). Another vet was on emergency call that weekend and came out to see it to make sure it wasn’t ulcerated before we started steroids again. Photos were taken and texted to my primary vet and to the eye doctor at New Bolton. We restarted steroids. Rory got a tentative diagnosis of immune-mediated keratitis and endotheliitis. Ava seems to be touching and playing with it a lot more than the previous one. Unfortunately her eye has been quite mucky since it’s been fitted so I’ve given it a good clean as well as her socket. In den höchstrangig publizierten Veröffentlichungen zum Dry Anophthalmic Socket Syndrome hat unser Team um Alexander und Ludwig 2020 dann ein neues Krankheitsbild, das Dry Anophthalmic Socket Syndrome (DASS), weltweit als erster beschrieben, benannt, definiert und auch Diagnostikkriterien erstellt. 2022 erstellten Alexander und Luwig in ihrer Publikation Post-Enucleation Socket Syndrome – A novel pathophysiological Definition erstmals eine umfassende Definition des Post-Enucleation-Socket-Syndroms (PESS). Das PESS wurde erstmals 1982, von den weltberühmten ophthalmoplastischen Chirurgen A.G. Tyers und J.R.O. Collin – nach letzterem ist auch der Richard Collin Junior Award benannt – beschrieben. NEW EYE DAY!!! Today Ava attended her first prosthetics appointment. All I can say is WOW the nurse who was treating Ava had the patience of a saint. It was a very hard and stressful appointment but a successful one. Ava had a new eye shaped and I even fitted it 😊. The nurse said she was one of the hardest patients she had in a while 🙈 but she also said it’s normal especially for her age. It must be so scary for her. Ava is too young to have a moulded eye at the moment as she wouldn’t stay still long enough for it to set. So for now we worked with the shells they already had. Today we focused on the size of her pupil and eye colour rather than the pattern of her remaining eye. It’s not perfect but we are a little closer at getting a match. From our family to yours we would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and thank you all for your support, generosity & kindness over the last couple of months. Ava’s cancer diagnosis and enucleation was not something we were prepared for and it’s been one hell of a roller coaster. We have some amazing people in our lives who have helped us learn how resilient we are when needed. Ava still has a long journey ahead of herself in regard to getting a new special custom-made eye and the wait for her genetic test results but we are remaining positive. We are so very proud of Ava. She has been through more than most people do in their whole life and she is still smiling and being her cheeky self! Ava’s been practicing her new party trick by taking her prosthetic eye out once again. It’s been less than a week since we had it put back in 🤦🏼♀️ Unfortunately Ava has taken a dislike to her new eye so when I show it to her she shouts “no” and throws it on the ground 😩 We took her to visit Santa and out for a meal with without her eye for the time. Well after yesterday’s fiasco of not letting the doctor remove her eye for a socket check Ava only goes and takes it out HERSELF! Thanks to fellow RB warrior @i_spy_with_my_special_eye for being a cheeky monkey I have seen plenty of pictures of what a socket will look like without the prosthetic in so wasn’t too shocked. After numerous calls we were finally told Singleton hospital will see her however there was no pediatric optometrist and that an adult’s specialist will try put it back in. Fast forward a few hours it took me and two doctors to hold her down and put it back it. Safe to say we have one very stressed mammy. Ava on the other hand strolled out like the little diva she is. Friday we finally received Ava’s biopsy results and it was GOOD news 😊 no chemotherapy needed. We are beyond happy. After everything Ava’s gone through we are just so happy she doesn’t have to go through the gruelling process that is chemotherapy. We took some time to process this news as ever since Ava was diagnosed with cancer it’s been a whirlwind of a journey and our feet haven’t touched the ground. Even tho this is amazing news we still can’t fully celebrate as we are still awaiting the genetic results which will tell us if Ava has the RB1 gene. If she has this then she will be susceptible to other cancers. Today we had another post op hospital appointment to check the progress of Ava’s socket. The doctor intended to remove Ava’s conformer (false eye) to give her socket a full check up. She found this very distressing and unfortunately the doctor was unsuccessful in taking it out. We have been given some drops to hopefully make her eye a little less uncomfortable. This is something unfortunately Ava has to get used too. Today has been a good day! @josephssmileuk invited Ava to a private event held at Brynamman Christmas Village. The event was set up for children who have cancer so that they can make special memories with their families during such difficult times. We had such an amazing time. Ava was her usual crazy self and kept all the Elves on their toes.
