Performing my daily deadlift. Who says riding isn’t a workout? And I’m not even on the horse yet!

I only started heavy on the squats, when I became serious about EQ sports. In the past the lower body wasn't really a major focus. Don't get me wrong I pressed and curled. But never went heavy. Squatting was often missed in my gym sesh. I was more of an upper body and cardio guy. Training for running and boxing. But what I found with EQ is that you need full body conditioning and strengthening. You have to be light, fit and flexible, but also strong. With particular focus on the core and stability. I find fast squats make me so much better in the saddle. Improving muscle memory and strength. I also noted that my quads are the best they have ever looked. So win win there! 😍🖤💪🏇🏋️‍♀️ . . . . . . . . #horsefitness #horseriderfitness #equestrianfitness #equestrianfitnessprogramme #equestrianfitnesscoach #horseriderfitnessprogram #equestrianworkout #equestrianfitnesstraining #ketoathlete #ketolife

📌A great Gymnsatics exercise to improve your Trajectory as well as your horse’s Responsiveness! HOW TO: 👉During your warm up in trot, start doing the poles in the circles. 👉Move on to canter and when you are ready practice the cavallettis on both reins. 👉Combine the whole exercise introducing the transitions. THE EXPERT’S ADVICE: ✅The circle helps in bringing your horse back to a balanced and supple pace. ✅Remember to prepare your transitions in advance. ✅During all transitions it is important to keep impulse and balance, both during upward and downward transitions. ✅If your horse is not responding well simplify the exercise by doing a circle without the trot poles or by intruding a full halt. ⤵️If in doubt, drop a comment! . . . . #equusacademy #team #showjumping #showjumpingexcercise #showjumper #jumpingteam #horsetrainer #horselesson #gridwork #gridworkexcercise #equestrian #horsegymnastic #horselover #springreiten #springpferd #pony #cavallo #cavalletti #equestrianworkout #cavallodasalto #younghorse #horsetrainingprogram #fridayatthestables #equestrianpolework #pferdubungen #cheval #sautdobstacles

Decent road run this afternoon. Finishing off with a heavy, weight lifting and gym ball session tonight. With the same again planned tomorrow. ❣️Transitions are fundamental in any horse’s training!☺️🐴 HOW TO: 👉Start warming up on the two sets of trot poles. 👉Move on to the poles in canter. 👉Combine the whole exercise introducing the transitions. THE EXPERT’S ADVICE: ✅For a proper training, the exercise should be practiced on both reins. ✅Focus on keeping your paces regular, as well as working on responsiveness during the transitions. ✅During all transitions it is important to keep impulse and balance, both during upward and downward transitions. ✅Try and maintain your horse supple and relaxed. ⤵️If in doubt, drop a comment! . . . . #equusacademy #team #showjumping #showjumpingexcercise #showjumper #jumpingteam #horsetrainer #horselesson #gridwork #gridworkexcercise #equestrian #horsegymnastic #horselover #springreiten #springpferd #pony #cavallo #cavalletti #equestrianworkout #cavallodasalto #younghorse #horsetrainingprogram #fridayatthestables #equestrianpolework #pferdubungen #cheval #sautdobstacles

When I first started having riding lessons, over 30 years ago (geez that makes me feel old!). I remember going to Wellington Riding, being handed a pony, and being sent on my way with the rest of the group to school. Trotting along in single file, without fear or concern, bouncing around in trot and trying desperately to steer 'round' the corners. When we hear the coach 'bellow', Sit Up! Kick On! Heels Down. None of us knew what the coach really meant but we tried to sit up super tall (nice hollow back, relying on our knees to stop us falling forward) coordinate staying on whilst steering and the 'pony club kick' (no idea why it has ever been acceptable to encourage 'kicking') and pushing our heels all the way down 'till they could touch the floor (talk about a sitting liability! knees on, hollow back, flapping legs and being thrown backward when cued to put our heels down) but we did the best we could with the 'little' information we had as children. We don't always understand what our coaches 'want us to do', but we don't want to seem that 'unknowledgeable', so we don't ask for a detailed explanation. We continue, attempting to deliver what we 'think' they mean. ℹ️ Take the 'heels' down cue. This doesn't mean bending the ankles so the heel is lower than the ball of your foot.. ✔️ It simply means, stop curling your leg towards your bottom. Imagine if that was explained to you. Not only would you have NOT developed a bad habit, but you would have improved your riding position and ability to ride transitions and not be 'behind' the movement. See. Details matter.

Helping our riders improve their own body proprioception in the saddle with support tools can go a long way in highlighting areas that could be stronger and gives us more pinpoint information to form the best program for those riders. These are cross body resistance bands that help magnify areas of poor mobility performance that might not be noticeable to the rider because they are so used to how they feel. When using the bands on the horse, they are for information feedback about your own body and where it is in reality and not where you think it is. Off the horse these bands can be used in workouts to help strengthen areas that need improvement. #nwriderfit #ironhorseeventing #equestrianfitness #fitnesscoach #pressureproofcoachingacademy #pressureprooffitnessbootcamp #nasm #personaltrainer #equestrianworkout #fitnessprograms #resistancebandstraining

This month one of my themes is to spread awareness of the concept of having a planned longer term training programme within your equestrian fitness journey. Often this can be over complicated but we can also make it really simple and effective. Essentially, breaking our goals up and reverse engineering a strategy. Sure we can get super fancy with it but there is no real need especially if planning out your training year is really new to you. Knowing that what you are doing January and February is really going to benefit you later in your competition season can be really very motivating to continue when the grind is less exciting as it was at the start of the year. So I have designed you a simple template for both a whole years fitness planning and additionally a template where you can design week by week workouts. I will walk through the concept of longer term planning in both my podcast and newsletter so make sure to be signed up for that at my website. These will be really great tools to get you thinking about your off horse goals in a strategic and holistic manner across the year. I hope you enjoy this content, so please share with a friend and make sure they get on the list before the 21st Jan to make sure it lands in as many equestrians inboxes as possible 🐎💪😍 * * * #equestrianperformance #eventfit #equestrianworkout #riderfitnessprogramme #riderfitness #equestrianfitness #strengthtraining #riderstrong #equestrian #dressagerider #eventrider #showjump #equestrianfitnessprogramme #horserider #horseriderfitness #ridestrongacademy #horse #instahorse #horselover #equine #horsesofinstagram #workout #training #Exercise #equestriansport #horsegirl #equestriansofinstagram

Having Regular lessons but no improvement? How Do You Improve Your Riding Ability and Feel? We all want to be thought of as good riders. To be independent and balanced in the saddle. To be able to ride with good body control and provide clear effective aids. To feel connected with our horse and that we contribute to the partnership, not hinder it. But it's hard. Riding is hard. There are few riders out there that are naturally talented and just seem to belong in the saddle. The majority of riders need to work at it, myself included. This constant battle of trying to be a good rider can often leave you feeling lost and demotivated. Despite riding regularly and having lessons you are still not progressing as much as you should be. Here's the thing. Trainers/coaches/instructors – whatever you call yours they are amazing people, but they are not magicians! They can give you all the advice, support and guidance in the world, but they cannot give you control over your body. They may momentarily be able to advise you on how to ‘adjust’ your body but that is all it is, momentary. As soon as they leave the arena you revert back to your ‘normal’ Why?🤔 Because posture is compromised through life. Working, responsibilities, kids, family, horses, money, and the general stress and strain of living. When your posture is compromised it affects your body’s ability to function optimally, naturally. If you have rounded shoulders you will collapse through your transitions, you will rely on your reins, you will feel left behind in the saddle. No amount of saying ‘sit up’ will correct that, ever. As the marvelous Lynn Gale from Froxfield Dressage said in a RiderCise® interview. 💬 It doesn't matter how good your trainer is, they cannot improve how you sit in the saddle💬 The way to improve your riding is to improve your posture. When your posture improves your riding position will improve. When your riding position improves your ability will improve. When your ability improves your feel develops. The Key to Living a Full Life. 🫧 'I wish I'd done it sooner' is the most common feedback I receive. 🫧 This insight from @jamesclear is spot on and I couldn't say it better myself, so I'll let him say it. "The way to live a full life is to act quickly. Particularly as you grow older, it's alarmingly easy to let a year or two (or five) slip by without doing the big things you always felt like doing. You get into a rhythm—not necessarily one you love, but one you become comfortable repeating—and the grooves of your daily routine become deeper and more established. Speed is perpetually undervalued. That doesn't mean you should feel frantic or rushed. In fact, it's likely you should eliminate some of the things that make you feel so busy to make space for things you always wanted to do. But it definitely means you should stop letting the days drift by waiting for the moment to be right. Stop acting like there is infinite time. This—the way you are living right now—is your one life." - James Clear - The Strong Confident Rider Program starts on 1st February. Join us and make 2024 a year of growth, progress and self investment. Don’t let another year pass you by. https://buff.ly/3PgD91H

Oi Fatty… That’s what my mum’s ‘best friend’ used to call me when I was 8 years old. My mum never called me fat but didn’t stop her ‘best friend’ from doing so either. This continued until she moved, roughly when I turned 12. I wasn’t bullied at school and had a large group of friends throughout my school years. I think because of this, I didn’t really consider myself fat but knew I wasn’t the same shape as the other girls either. On reflection I think the damage that it did was locked away from anyone to see and shown through my behavior, being incredibly strong-willed and resistant to any form of authority. My mum sent me to live with my dad at 14 because I was uncontrollable. I did not respect her or her attempt to ‘parent’ me. I resented her for allowing this to happen. I never allowed her to ‘mother’ me. She was my mum and I can’t change that. I loved her, but her disrespect for me lost mine for her. I built my relationship back with my mum on the basis that she needed to earn my respect back. The things that happen to us in life shape us. I have strong ethics and values and nothing can sway or change that. For this I’m grateful. We can turn negative to positive, despite what has happened to us. The journey so far is what has made you the person you are today. Picture of me with two loves of my life. Adam and Annick after a photoshoot.
