Could anything like EVE exist to help us find life on other planets? Definitely! And scientists are already working on such telescopes and robots! Some astrobiologists proposed that we can detect whether a far-off planet has trees by measuring shadows at different times. When a tree-covered planet is at its high-noon position in relation to its sun, the trees would reflect infrared and visible light into space. At time points earlier or later than midday, the trees would cast long shadows and the planet would be dimmer. But things like the tilt of the planet, presence of water, clouds and other potential structures that cast shadows complicate make these calculations less useful. Furthermore, plants on other planets could have adapted to absorb different wavelengths of light based on the strength of the star and the kinds of gases in the planet’s atmosphere. Therefore, the plants might be black or blue or yellow and not reflect light in the near infrared range like the green plants on our planet, which affects the shadow calculations. These shadow calculations also require lots of large plants. But if plants are much smaller and sparser on a planet’s surface, we’d likely need to rely on robots that currently exist to detect vegetation. Computer vision can easily detect large amounts of light in the green and infrared ranges to guess where plants are. More sophisticated training programs are helping other sensors tell the difference between weeds, diseased crops, and healthy plants. These artificial vision systems will eventually help robots navigate safely in unpaved, off-road conditions or harvest our crops for us. And another kind of vegetation evaluator called ECOSTRESS is currently installed on the International Space Station. It measures the temperature of plants on Earth to help predict droughts in individual fields around the world.
