Unfortunately, they are struggling nowadays. A video after the photo of ploughing in the field bordering the Adlington Pollinator Project. From a wildlife point of view Iā€™m happy itā€™s a spring ploughing, as opposed to the usual autumn winter wheat sowing because the land has been fallow over the autumn and winter attracting flocks of linnets, finches and pipits for the weed seeds and insects. And now gulls, mostly black headed, follow the plough eating the exposed worms, grubs and other soil beasties - am I imagining thereā€™s more gulls this year because the fallow season allows the worms to increase? The linnets are now moving frequently on to the Adlington Pollinator Project feasting on coltsfoot seeds and dandelion. Iā€™m hoping that local breeding increases for this endangered bird that has suffered big UK declines because of intensive farming. Two little changes, the timing of ploughing and the provision of a neighbouring habitat might be the help needed in this local patch. #adlingtonpollinatorproject #ploughing #springsowing #intensivefarming #gulls #blackheadedgull #plough #ploughing #linnet #farmlandbirds #farmbirds

How many people can sit at their computer and see a Red Kite soaring in front of their office window?! šŸ‘€ We remember seeing a Red Kite re-introduction project in Wales back in the 1980s when they were on the brink of extinction and now this incredible raptor is a regular sight in Suffolk and is breeding here at Milden ā€“ such a joy to behold it gliding around over our farm. šŸŖ šŸ’° They have been persecuted ever since Henry VIII put a price on its head back in the Tudor day, and then fell victim to enthusiastic 20th century egg collectors šŸ„š. šŸƒ Thankfully these wonderful birds are a conservation success story and now back to stay in Suffolk where they feast on worms, small mammals, road-kill and other carrion ā€“ and a few small birds. šŸ› Come, stay and bring your binoculars and enjoy our resident birds of prey: Red Kites, Buzzards, Kestrels, Barn Owls, Tawny Owls and Ravens ā€¦. or watch a Sparrowhawk pluck a Woodpigeon or a Hobby try to take a House Martin šŸ¦… šŸ“ø Red Kite photo taken by the ever-patient Frances Browne @fbphotography33 #birdwatchingsuffolk #birdwatchinguk #redkite #redkites #suffolkbirds #suffolkbirdwatching #BritishWildlife #UKWildlife #FarmlandBirds #Woodland #Ponds #FarmStay #Blackbird #BirdsOfInstagram

**Reminder for IpplePlanet Birdsong Walk tomorrow, Saturday 13th April IpplePlanet Birdsong walk at Bulleigh Barton. To book, PLEASE EMAIL BEFORE MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, Friday 12th to [email protected] stating in the email title "Saturday 13th April IpplePlanet Birdsong walk".** Can you tell a blackbird song from a robin song? When was the last time you saw or heard a wren? Join our guided walk and learn how to identify garden birds from their songs. In the past, I have stood in a field chatting to a farmer who said that he hadnā€™t heard or seen a wren for years, this was whilst standing by a hedge with wrens singing their hearts out! You just need to get your ā€˜ear inā€™ to learn birdsongs, itā€™s easy if you know what to listen out for. Liz and Mark at Bulleigh Barton have once again very kindly offered to host our first birdsong walk of the year. Expect garden birds, and if we are very lucky, we might see farmland birds such as the yellowhammer, pictured, or even the rare cirl bunting. Bird sightings are not guaranteed but a nice gentle walk listening to birds in beautiful countryside is! Meet on the roadside outside of Ipplepen Village Hall at 8.45am to be green and car-share, as there is limited parking at the venue. Or meet at Bulleigh Barton at 9am. Booking is essential as we have a maximum of 12 people for this walk. Sorry, no dogs, but well-behaved supervised children welcome. Please wear sensible footwear and clothing to suit the weather, there will be walking on grassy fields and an optional few steps in one place. The event is weather dependent and will be cancelled if there is heavy rain and strong winds. Birds are harder to spot and less likely to be active, singing and foraging, in bad weather ā€“ not just because we are fair-weather birders! Bring binoculars if you have them, but not necessary, just bring your ears! Free event, although donations to our IpplePlanet community interest group are very welcome. Should be finished around 10.30am. Farmland birds have declined in the UK more than any other habitat defined group over the last 50 years The yellowhammer is a case in point; this stunning bunting species has declined by 62% in that time across the UK according to @btobirds figures There has also been a 23% range contraction over that period and so there are places where that classic 'little bit of bread and no cheese' song was once heard but no longer As a consequence of all this, they are Red-listed as a bird of conservation concern A change in farming practices to increased intensification is almost certainly largely to blame Winter crops now often replace stubble fields, taking away a valuable source of food during the colder months In summer, intensive pesticide use means there are less invertebrates to feed chicks Scotland seems to be bucking the trend ever so slightly with a small increase and here on the east coast of the Highlands, they are, thankfully, fairly easy to track down in the right habitat The first 3 pictures here show a brightly coloured male living up to his name, while the next 3 show the more subdued female #farmlandbirds #yellowhammer #buntings

Larsen traps out now to control Crows and Magpies. In addition to the provision of all the legally required components when using a Larsen trap, including shelter, food, clean water and perch, we also use a sign to help educate anyone who may come across the trap, a PerdixPro trap tag that monitors both catching compartments 24/7 (must still physically check trap and decoy bird daily) and a camera to both monitor corvid activity around the trap and capture valuable evidence of illegal trap interference if required. All data including trap locations, details of captures, physical inspection logs and images are securely stored on the PerdixPro platform. #perdixpro #wildlifeconservation #wildlifemanagement #trapping #farmlandbirds

Yellowhammers make the Nature Reserve their home during the warmer months of the year. You can often spot them on the tops of trees in the main coombe, and hear them singing. Their bright yellow gives the males away and makes them easily recognisable. But do you know the easy way to identify their call? "Nee, hier zitten teveel blaadjes in!" "Deze dan, is dit meer je keus?" "Ook niet, te dunne takjes, 't is heus!" (zucht) "En deze, kan die ermee door?" "Sorry, maar deze is echt van binnen te goor!" "Dit is de laatste, ik geef het bijna op!" "Es kijken, deze is goed, lief, deze is top!" Eindelijk heeft de winterkoningin aan een nest haar goedkeuring gehecht En is de winterkoning na 4 nesten bouwen .........

I love lapwings, so here are three pics I took of them one day last month. Its glossy dark green plumage can look black from a distance and in flight, but it is such a stunning bird seen close-up with its long crest. It used to be a common sight, but numbers have fallen by around 60% since the 1960s,mainly due to changes in land management. We are lucky to have a good population here in Avebury, and in nearby Slimbridge, due to efforts to improve the quality of habitat for them. #lapwing #farmlandbirds #spacefornature #rspb_love_nature #rspb #slimbridge #peewit

šŸ¦ā€ā¬› Grassland provides an important habitat for many bird species, benefiting different birds at different times of year. During late winter, curlews and lapwings forage the fields for food, while birds such as starlings are attracted to areas with livestock. Here they can feed on the grubs found in the animalsā€™ faeces. As we head into spring, migratory swallows, house martins and sand martins will start to make the most of grassland across the farm. #grassland #migratorybirds #farmlandbirds #farming

We recently took part in the GWCT farmland bird survey on the Estate. 3 sites were surveyed with very pleasing results.Ā  Excellent numbers of Linnets, Reed Buntings and Chaffinches were recorded as well as 30 Bramblings, 6 Yellowhammers and 3 Redwings also being the highlights. In total, approximately 354 linnets were counted across all 3 sites; 200 were seen at 1 site alone. This is extremely satisfying as the Linnet is a red listed bird which has faced a dramatic drop in numbers of 57% in recent year's.Ā  The common Linnet, Linaria in Latin, has a fondness for eating seeds, particularly hemp and flax seeds. Flax being the English name of the plant from which linen is made, which is how this little finch derived it's name. šŸ“ø @harrywhymark #gwct #farmlandbirds #farmlandbirdcount #linnet #redlistedbirds

Ragley Estate is a keen supporter of the environment and nature conservation, and we invest annually in the creation of wild bird habitats. Each year, we plant 35 acres of AB9 wild bird cover crop, and we put down 6 tonnes of supplementary winter feeding for farmland birds (AB12) between November and March. We are always keen to monitor our environmental impact, and to look for more opportunities across the farm and the whole estate. This year, with the help of some very enthusiastic and knowledgable locals and our own team on the farm, we have completed 9 separate 30-minute surveys as part of the GWCT Big Farmland Bird Count. The surveys were completed at different locations across the estate farm, with varying habitats, weather conditions and at a range of times of day. In total, there were 42 species of birds recorded, including 3 species on the Red List for Birds (deemed as Birds of Conservation Concern). These were Linnets, Lapwings and Fieldfares. We would like to thank all of the volunteers who took the time to help us out. We have had some lovely feedback, such as from Tom and his dad Rob, who are both keen on nature and long-term members of the RSPB. "It was great to go out and spend a bit of time with Dad. It's been years since we went twitching together. With children of my own, it's normally a noisy affair and the children monopolise my time, so to leave them at home with a good excuse was great.ā€ Thanks also to one of our farm team, Natalie, who spent time in her own garden overlooking one the estateā€™s farm fields, and also recorded the birds she saw whilst spreading the winter feed. We will share a summary of the national results from the GWCT as soon as we have them. @gamewildlifeconservationtrust @gwctevents #bfbc #bigfarmlandbirdcount2024 #farmlandbirds #farming #environment #nature #wildlife #biodiversity
