Birthed in a tiny corner of my old bedroom. A place where I spent much time self-isolating. It was my comfort zone amongst the chaos and aftermath of the pandemic. It was where I spoke to my loved ones lost, where I soaked in the joy of cradling my children, where I attended therapy sessions, where I took courses and connected with others behind the screen. It was this moment in time that I was able to work through the pain and create something from the heart. Debra began her studies at the Sam Fox College of Art at Washington University and continued on to get a Masters in Art Therapy at Goddard College in Vermont. Debra loves the complexities of collage and mixed media. She aims to create visual dialogues about our environment and the meditative qualities of nature. Debra has always felt the importance of being active in her community. She worked with Creative Tampa Bay as it launched its’ economic development mission to foster a region of creatives. In 2004 she formed a non-profit, Forward Thinking Initiatives, that began with a mission to teach entrepreneurship to teens but worked its way into teaching “Artrepreneurship”. In addition to creating fine art, Debra uses her original mixed media pieces as surface design on wearables such as silk scarves, silk and chiffon kimonos and bags. She loves to collaborate with other artists and has worked on a number of pieces with her cousin and formed the wearable art company, Campbell and Cope. Unlike any Euro-American fashion plate previously seen, Iribe’s flat, two-dimensional style with its bold blocks of coloring found inspiration in Japanese woodblock prints. The album represents a significant break from the typical fashion plate of the day which provided detailed, line-for-line depictions of garments devoid of any creative sentiment. Iribe’s work shattered these static visual conventions in favor of the mood-invoking qualities of avant-garde art. For the month of April we are hosting a pop-up boutique in the gift shop for Fashion as Art, in partnership with @fralinmuseumuva We are excited to offer a selection of handwoven earrings and jewelry by our most recent artist in residence, @lisa.waup who handcrafted these pieces using found and recycled materials. The fabric in her woven earrings are from remnant fabric from her fashion collection with designer Ingrid Verner. Lisa Waup's solo-exhibition "close to the wind" is on view in our Focus Gallery through June 30th. Lisa Waup is a mixed-cultural First Nations artist and curator who was born in Narrm (Melbourne). Her multidisciplinary practice encompasses a diverse range of media, including weaving, printmaking, photography, sculpture, fashion, and digital art. With a deep connection to the symbolic power of materials, her work reflects her personal experiences, family history, Country, and broader historical narratives. Through her practice, Waup weaves together threads of lost history, ancestral relationships, motherhood, and the passage of time that culminates in contemporary expressions that speak to her past, present, and future. In her words, “As a multidisciplinary artist, I’m guided to utilize so many different mediums—they really talk to me—and in turn they’re able to explain my story in different ways, they all connect with each other. Material diversity is a big part of what I do in my practice—I’m happy to move across various media and am always open to exploring new materials and approaches that connect to the work I am making at the time."
