Our first Trout Fest event was a huge success. It exceeded our expectations with all the vendors who participated and the 250+ that attended and over 100 kids who got to participate in releasing almost 400 pounds of rainbow trout into the Kern River. I love this photo. On a glassed out lake, on a Saturday of all days, we find serenity... now. Here, Ben from @ozzynativeflies is putting a solid bend into his Primal Raw C rod. Spotty wee brown from the local. The colours on these fish always amaze me with shades of gold, copper red and green it kinda feels rude just calling them brown. Spotted this one in some faster water feeding away. A reminder regarding Lahontan Cutthroat from Nevada for the Western Native Trout Challenge. There are three primary counties in Nevada containing streams where Lahontan Cutthroat Trout concentrate; Elko, Humboldt, and Nye. Streams in these counties are remote, but dispersed camping is allowed on National Forest and Bureau of Land Management lands and all basins are within the Humboldt River watershed. The streams are recommended based on abundance of fish and angler accessibility; however, there is a multitude of historical streams containing Lahontan Cutthroat Trout. We encourage you to seek these Lahontan Cutthroat in their native range but Nevada Department of Wildlife (@nevadawildlife) will allow fish from Pyramid Lake to count towards the Challenge. 🎣: @hannahqstubblefield 📸: @c__stubb #lahontancutthroat #westernnativetroutchallange
The Bear Lake Cutthroat (BLCT) have highly predatory feeding habits relying heavily on terrestrial insects which blow into the lake for the first few years of their life. As BLCT reach 16”, their focus is directed towards consuming the lake’s endemic species such as the Bear Lake Sculpin and Bonneville Cisco. The BLCT are the only trout known to increase in weight during winter, which is likely due to availability of the cisco, which spawn in January and are highly available in shallow waters where they are easy to target. While the BLCT have coexisted with Lake Trout since their introduction in 1911, and the BLCT population has continues to grow with support from stocking, the maximum size of BLCT growth has significantly declined. The largest BLCT weight on official record is 23 3/4oz after the fish had already been cleaned which has been estimated as approximately 26lbs by Dr. Robert Behnke. The most recent state record for Idaho from Bear Lake was 18.9lbs in 1970. Since that record. it is rare to see a BLCT reaching over 12 pounds and three to five pounds is common. This may be primarily due to competition for a common food supply, or a combination of many factors influencing the lake over the last 100 years. In 1941, N.S. Davis who was in charge of agricultural investigations, wrote Dr. Stillman Wright of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service a letter expressing his concerns regarding the BLCT. Most notably he stated, “I have been wondering for some time if the introduction of mackinaw trout in so many of the lakes in the Intermountain Region has always been for the best. The introduction of such a voracious fish must have had far-reaching effects and is it not possible that the decline of the trout population may have been due in some instances to the presence of mackinaw trout as well as over-fishing?” While studies have been done to better understand impacts influencing the endemic species populations in the lake, little is known regarding the decline of maximum growth potential of the BLCT. Further study of changes to Bear Lake and its ecosystem may provide a better understanding of the decrease in the BLCT growth. #bearlakecutthroat
