I saw these minibeasts land on the leaf and grabbed a quick snap. I wasn't quite sure what was going on until I got the photo up on a big screen and zoomed in a bit. Big ole beauty pennasks crushin scuds and bloods in the am and turning to the crons in the pm. Wind didn’t make it easy but turns out ya just had to take the bobber off! - While things seem slow to be happening one thing to remember is though ice came off on the early side of things the water temps have yet to reach 50 degrees anywhere we have been. That upper 40’s low 50’s seems to be the magic number to really get the fish and bugs going so while hatches can be spotty they’re out there and very soon will be everywhere so keep getting after it and keep working the staples in the absence of a hatch. Getting it Dun! Fantastic evening rises on the Mitta Mitta River in the Victorian High Country, with dun-imitation flies the best way I could find to get an eat from these fussy fish, and a handful of beautiful brown trout to almost 50cm caught across the best part of a week camped on the riverbank. I started out with one dun fly that I'd been gifted, and promptly lost it by hooking a bush on the backcast. I later managed to cadge a couple more from a fellow angler I met, and found another little stash at a general store with a fly cabinet. Had to get a quick snap of this fish before it went back to make someone else’s day! 610mm rainbow caught during our river nationals. Put up a great battle on the new @orvisflyfishing HELIOS F 10’ 3wt Running a single 3mm caddis fly with a pink bead which was doing the majority of the work. You tie so many different flys up, but I usually never use more than about 4 different patterns, and my confidence flys like this one caught 90% of all my fish that weekend. Equally important as the rod is the tippet holding onto the fish, @scientificanglers absolute trout supreme FC in 5x copped an absolute beating by fish like this all weekend taking off on wild runs downstream around rocks and it never failed once. Confidence on a spool. 🤙🏼🔥
