Palisade Falls (OR): Palisade Falls is this historical name for the seasonal waterfall that occurs immediately below Crown Point along the Historic Columbia River Highway ( #HCRH). The falls can be seen from Interstate 84 during the rainy season; during the summer droughts it completely dries up. I first noticed this one a couple years ago on the way to another rainy, winter hike in the Gorge. We pulled over and took a few pics on the highway side of Mirror Lake. At the time I could not figure out how to get to the base of the falls. There is no official trail, there’s no signage, and I could not see a safe way to get to the area above the falls. The area is cut off from the interstate by a lake and then fenced off railroad tracks. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon a post on a hikers’ forum from 2016 with photos that I could see how it is possible. There’s not much info about this waterfall available; it is one of the most seen but least visited falls in the Gorge. “I can reclaim the land.” -Mother Nature, quoting Taylor Swift My most difficult 10k day this year was probably 2 days ago, because much of the day was spent exploring areas that had gone through devastating forest fires not long ago, barely reopened for public use. And by reopened, the land is accessible- but the trails are no longer in a “usable” state. Thus, I found myself traveling with my phone in my hand constantly navigating, stepping over burned stumps and avoiding areas of the ground that were hollowed by stumps and root systems that were completely gone, dragging my legs out of tangles of pricker vines, and stumbling over terrain strewn with rocks, branches, and other debris. I noted no garbage anywhere- usually on a hiking trail, you will see at least a piece or two of trash. There was none- it has burned, and there have been no hikers to drop any. If you want to see nature in action, these are the places. A few years and the landscape is changing. Different plants slowly covering the forest floor. Herd paths with obvious hoof prints show that animals are around. A stream flowing down through charred tree trunks. Also enjoyable was an unburned, but also unmaintained trail. I was expecting runnable, but based on zero research ahead of time, I got adventure hike instead. Over and under, through and around, nature creates an obstacle course. Going off trail eventually to take on a stair-stepper of a hill climb feels like freedom- no prescribed course, choose the least blocked pathway. My general thought is, if a point is labeled on a map, someone has stood there. But it’s fun to go off trail, to wonder how many have taken your steps, seen that view, appreciated that hillside or rock formation or cliff or grove of trees. With ridgelines or high points without names, I wonder how long it’s been since a human has stepped there. Who they were, what brought them there. Often there will be other signs of humans off trail: long abandoned rudimentary forest roads from a century ago, a stack of rocks, a fire pit, a faint campsite. I saw none of these telltale signs, which makes the area even more fascinating to me. It feels less explored, more wild.

Wrapping up my last hike at 7:45, I had been moving as quickly as I could down one of the steepest descents i’ve been on, slipping and sliding as I raced the sunset, and now I raced to the only little food store in the sparse wilderness. Located in a small settlement, destroyed by fire a few years back and much restored but never the same. Like a puzzle that a small child has gotten their hands on and played with too roughly, a few pieces still missing and many of the colored sides peeled up or bent. It doesn’t ever quite fit back together the way it used to. Pulling in at 8:04, the store was closed. All day, it had sold bottles of liquor and packages of candy, gas tanks were filled, people came and left to make dinner at home, and meanwhile I was alone in the woods on the side of a mountain above town dodging widowmakers and snagging legs on pricker vines. The store sat dark, coolers within glowing with empty promise. I did not need anything really, it was just post-hike enthusiasm and snackish hunger that directed me there. I had the distinct but not completely unwelcome realization then, with no other food options available (not that there were more than 1-2), that while I was out on my evening mission the rest of the world continued on without me. My only option now was to find a place to spend the night, and cook my own dinner with hot water in the glow of the interior light. After not seeing a single person during the day’s 17 miles of mountainous terrain both on trail and off, it was fitting that society would not envelop me back into its arms just yet. I would remain a lone traveler, noticeable only by those who came up behind me on the highway, impatient that this silver van wasn’t moving beyond the speed limit as my eyes scanned and scoured the sides of the highway for promising forest roads to turn onto. Wildwood E2E was food for the soul; in so many ways. 🔹🔷🔹 What I’m most proud of isn’t having run this trail, but instead, it’s the fact that the absolute best people in the world, decided to dedicate their day to support me. The km’s don’t matter, how you spend them does. And I got to run alongside some pretty dope people, while soaking in the wonders of Forest Park. From running with me, running around trying to find me, to making sure my water, snacks, and spirit are all getting topped off, this crew took the best care of me and I’ll be forever grateful to have these amazing humans in my life and in my corner. There was no shortage of hugs, smiles, or miles! I feel so incredibly grateful and fortunate. What a dreamy day! Rooster Rock Wagon Road Hike, OR: The Portland Women’s Forum State Scenic Viewpoint at Chanticleer Point is often one of the first stops while traveling the Historic Columbia River Highway ( #HCRH). Rooster Rock, Phoca Rock, Vista House, and Beacon Rock can all be seen from the viewpoint. In the 1950s, the Portland Women’s Forum, a group instrumental in having the Gorge declared a National Scenic Area, purchased the property and then donated it to the state in 1963. Historically, the property was the home to the Chanticleer Inn, built in 1912, twenty five miles east of Portland, over 700 ft above the bank of the Columbia River. That predates the #HistoricColumbiaRiverHighway by three years. The only way to reach the inn was by taking a boat or the train to Rooster Rock and then one would need to either walk or take the wagon shuttle up the steep, unpaved road. The hike largely follows that old wagon road. The inn burned down in 1930. The roadway was abandoned but not officially closed until the 1980s. Well, we finally managed a ‘C’ date. We went Camping at Clyde Holiday State Park, in John Day, Oregon. We drove through Painted Canyon on our way to the John Day Fossil Bed National Monument. We explored 2 of the 3 units of the monument. We saw Cathedral Rock. We saw 4 million cows. We wandered through the Painted Hills. We slept in a Teepee. We ate Camp-cuterie, by LED candlelight. Sunday morning we went on an epic quest to find somewhere to have breakfast. We ended up in a cute Cafe in Canyon City. We ate a delicious breakfast, then wandered around a bit and found a pretty cool covered pedestrian bridge.
