By spring 1945, Flak-Bait’s ground crew had repaired over 1,000 holes on the aircraft caused by Nazi shrapnel, cannon shells, and machine gun bullets (hence the name “Flak-Bait”). Ever see one of these? A friend of mine has a remarkable collection of WWll weapons and memorabilia. This is the legendary Norden Bombsight, used in B-17’s and B-24’s and other aircraft to facilitate accurate bombing. Its inventors claimed a skilled operator could drop a 500-pounder into a pickle barrel, but foggy skies and persistent flak over European targets made that a challenge. Top secret in its day and closely guarded, few of these units have survived. My family connection to @mastersoftheairappletv Meet my cousins: Norman, Joe, and Harold (Heshie). Their father was my great grandfathers brother and they served in the Army and Army Air Force during WW2. Normie was a firefighter for the FDNY and was assigned to the 2012th Engineering Aviation Fire Fighting Platoon in England. He was stationed at RAF Stansted, protecting B-26 Marauders of the 344th Bombardment Group and then Advanced Landing Ground-89, Le Culot, Belgium for the invasion of Germany where he watched over B-26s of the 322nd BG and P-47s of the 373rd and 36th Fighter Groups. One plane he protected is Flak Bait, now under preservation at the @smithsonian. Joe was a weatherman for the 8th Army Air Force in England. Heshie didn’t finish flight school and was reassigned to be a navigation instructor stateside for bomber crews. It is Captain Sherm Best Sunday! Capt Best, USAF Ret'd, was a bomber pilot in WWII flying the Martin B-26B-25-MA "Marauder", and he flew "Flakbait" Ser 41-31773 on 14 missions. Flakbait earned its nickname due to the fact that in 207missions flown during the war, it came back on almost every flight with holes and damage caused by German flak. Flakbait is currently at the Stephen Udvar-Hazy Museum Annex of the Air and Space Museum in the restoration shop at Dulles Airport, a fine museum to visit if on the west side of Washington DC. They have viewing windows so you can see the aircraft. Captain Best was a friend to the Hickory Aviation Museum and he was often seen hanging out, smiling, laughing, and signing Marauder aircraft models. He left us in 2016 at the age of 95 and he is greatly missed. #b52uesday With most of the B-52H’s in service being 60+ years old, many have storied histories. This gal is no exception. Meet 60-0035 or ‘Flak Bait II’ (formerly ‘Global Warrior’). Flak Bait II carries on the legacy of the infamous B-26 Marauder ‘Flak Bait’ now preserved at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. Flak Bait lived up to its name, sustaining insane amounts of damage during its record 202 bombing missions over Western Europe. Having lost several major systems and at least one engine on multiple occasions, none of Flak Bait’s crew were killed. It makes perfect sense that Flak Bait’s legacy lives on in the USAF as a B-52H of the 307th BW based at Barksdale AFB. “Flak-Bait” was a Martin B-26 Marauder airplane that genuinely lived up to its nickname. Throughout its career, the aircraft survived a total of 207 missions, including five where it served as a decoy to draw enemy flak fire. That’s nearly twice as many total missions as most other plans flew during the war. It also notably took part in the Battle of the Bulge and D-Day at Normandy. On aggregate, Flak Bait holds the United States Air Forces record for the highest number of bombing missions conducted and survived during World War II. The most impressive thing about the twin-engine bomber is the amount of flak it absorbed while still somehow staying in the sky. As it conducted flights across Belgium, France, Germany, and the Netherlands the aircraft was shot over a thousand times, twice the plane managed to return to base with only one engine. Although it had almost every part of its airframe replaced at one point or another, Flak-Bait soared back to the skies from the mission after mission. Had a great time last weekend for my first time in DC! Loved getting to see all the Smithsonian museums, monuments, ride the metro, but my absolute favorite out of everything we did was going to the @airandspacemuseum and seeing the @nasa Space Shuttle Discovery, Blackbird, and the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, the Enola Gay. And we stopped by the Luray Caverns on our way home. Lotado no 449th Bombardment Squadron, baseado na Inglaterra, esse Marauder cumpriu nada menos do que 202 missões de combate, número que fez dele o recordista entre todos os aviões aliados que operaram na Europa durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial. Em suas 725 horas de combate, conseguidas não só em missões sobre a Alemanha, mas também no Dia D, na Batalha das Ardenas e na Operação Crossbow, o ataque as bases de lançamento das V-1, o “Flak-Bait” acumulou mais de 1.000 buracos, além de ter retornado a base duas vezes só com um motor, outra sem o sistema elétrico e duas sem o sistema hidráulico. Apesar disso, nenhum dos seus tripulantes morreu em combate. Retirado de serviço em março de 1946, ele foi inicialmente estocado em um depósito na Alemanha e depois desmontado e enviado aos Estados Unidos para ser preserado. It's #NationalTwinDay and we're bringing you the story of Raymond "Glenn" Clanin and Russell "Lynn" Clanin, identical twins, who served together during #WorldWarII in the #AirForceReserve. The Clanin brothers flew a Martin B-26 #Marauder named #FlakBait on several missions together with the 449th Bombardment Squadron, 322nd Bomb Group, known as #TheAnnihilators, while stationed in Beauvais, France. Glenn completed 26 missions while Lynn completed 21 missions in the twin-engine medium bomber. After the war, Lynn moved to California and in 1948 married his wife Elyn in a joint ceremony with his brother Glenn who married Elyn's sister, Carolyn. The sisters were also identical twins. Flak Bait Friday! Martin B-26B Marauder 41-31773 "Flak Bait" flew 207 operational missions over Europe with the 322nd BG, this is more than any other US aircraft in WW2! Today she is undergoing conservation at the National Air and Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, Udvar-Hazy Center, Virginia USA and will eventually be reassembled and placed on display. Flak-Bait is under long term restoration.
