September 28, 1983: The summit of Gulf Hagas Mountain was partially open. Covered with a low, dense tangle of scrubby growth, it sported some decent views back to the south. I paused very briefly at the summit to take it all in before turning back northward and starting down the other side. Suddenly, I was frozen in my tracks. I had been zoning out at the time, moving ahead on autopilot. My mind was wandering distant pathways, tuning out a snowballing mass of fatigue. I had no idea why my feet had abruptly stopped, why the hair on my arms, legs, and neck was spiking like the quills of a porcupine. I returned to the present, blinking like a man waking from a dream. Then, I saw it. Ahead of me and to the left was a vision drawn from the mists of dreams, a legend of long-ago summer nights kept alive by the aspirations and longings of a tired wanderer. A myth made real by the sweat and blood of two thousand weary miles. ... I smiled as my gaze returned to the mountain. So many miles behind me. It looked so close. It was getting late. I headed down the ridge. Beyond the summit, the crest of Gulf Hagas Mountain was a descending progression of small knobs. Viewpoints along the ridge were better than at the summit. Now that I'd seen it and known it for what it was, Mount Katahdin kept popping up, over and over again. This was the Katahdin of my June and July daydreams. I never saw myself on the mountain, just close. Looking across miles of forests decked out in reds, golds and oranges. Cool lakes reflecting the deep blue Autumn sky. A desert oasis full of surprises & more 🏜️✨ My perspective on travel took a turn 5.5 years ago when we backpacked Havasupai. There were many unexpected conditions across weather and from the destination itself that reminded me that letting spontaneity happen is a natural part of travel. It’s not realistic to set high expectations and resist uncontrollable conditions - you will just burn yourself out. 😮💨 Being here with close friends and supportive company was a beautiful way to share a lot of our first backpacking experiences together (it was my second backpacking trip, so I was still learning a lot!). A few years ago Dakota and I attempted to hike the Chuck Keiper Trail here in PA. On the third day we ended up bailing with about 6 miles left. We went in July during a heat wave, underbrush higher than you can imagine, and the trail was covered with blowdowns constantly. A few days ago we ventured out to tackle it once again. This time in cooler temps and before the underbrush and stinging nettle had a chance to pop up. Overall it was better this time of year. Some of the blowdowns were dealt with since a few years ago but there was still close to the amount as last time. A little tired, a little bruised, and a little bloodied but the Chuck Keiper Trail did not beat us. Brazil, you have been a blast! So long for now and see you again in 6 weeks 😃 I cannot say enough how much I’ve loved this country. It’s been on my wish list for ages and it fully loved up to expect action and some more. From the people and fun vibes, and the food to the sun and beaches. It was perfect after a long winter. Rio is such a me city. I could have stayed for weeks. But a solid few days allowed me to see so much including a wonder of the world. I can safely say I will be back some day. I’ve been thruhiking for 6 years (!!!) but I’m still experiencing “firsts”: 1. Hiking with someone consistently for more than a few days. It’s probably obvious that @thescavengerprincess and I do NOT hike at the same pace, but we make plans to meet up throughout the day and decide where to camp depending on mileage. Having someone around to take cool photos of me. 6. Mio snow cone. 7. Having ankle pain! I have had NO problems from my hip, knees, or feet, but my right ankle has been giving me grief for a couple of weeks. Can’t believe we finally ticked this off the bucket list 🥹❤️ We just got back from an epic backpacking trip with dreamlandsafari to Reflection Canyon (sponsored). We’ve gone on several day trips with Dreamland, so when we found out about their new backpacking offerings we immediately jumped on the chance to go to Reflection Canyon. The hike is 15 miles round trip through the Utah desert, and requires advanced planning for navigation and for water access. Being fairly new backpackers, we didn’t want to risk getting lost or running out of water, so going with the experts at dreamlandsafari took the logistical stress out of it all. We got home on Saturday and I’m already back on Dreamland’s website day dreaming about the next desert adventure. Powell Mountain to Dicks Creek Gap for a zero day with Hostel Around the Bend Clayton had a lot of great local museums and some good eats 😋 And Hiawassee was my first big Ingles resupply. Gordon and Lisa at Around the Bend were awesome; very helpful and their hostel was so cozy! Great lodging, and I was able to pick up some new shoes and resupply from the on-site outfitter (goodbye blisters!). Another plus: 2 super cute hostel kitties and a hostel puppy! Backpacking in the Snowy Range is a real treat! Although this range has gotten more crowded in recent years the crowds seem mostly confined to the "front" of it, which is very accessible from a highway. Hike around "back"? Almost nobody. This picture of North Gap Lake is from September of 2020.
What’s the one luxury item that you always take camping? Okay, okay, so we may have more than one (you won’t ever catch us backpacking without our inflatable pillows as we’re both comfort QUEENS 👑!), but we ALWAYS bring coffee in our packs. There’s just something about unzipping your tent in some beautiful setting and starting the day with a nice warm mug in your hand. ⛺️☕️ The only problem? Most instant coffee sucks- we’ve honestly tried dozens of brands and struggled to find one that tastes like, well, coffee. On our recent trip to Havasu Falls, we tried @cinder.bird instant matcha and mocha lattes and they are a GAME 👏🏼 CHANGER 👏🏼. They use high quality ingredients, like powdered oat milk for creaminess (look at that FROTH, though!), organic chaga and lion’s mane mushrooms for anti-inflammatory benefits (which we needed after hiking 40+ miles over 4 days 🫠), and MCT oil to combat the post-coffee jitters. Easily an unexpected highlight of this Brazil trip is being invited to a neighbourhood samba party in one of the outer suburbs of Brasilia. I absolutely love for these random local experiences and I’m still buzzing from it! Samba is one of the life bloods of Brazilian culture and it’s world famous for it. But sadly it wasn’t always this way. The famous Brazilian rhythm of samba, the soundtrack to annual Carnaval festivities, has been more than just a reflection of the happiness and celebration the South American nation is known for. It has also been a form of activism against repression in Brazil. For decades, several artists have used samba music to express their opinions on the social, economic and political issues in the country. Artists who were censored during the country’s dictatorships managed to pass along their political protest messages disguised as happy tunes. During the military dictatorship of General Getúlio Vargas in the 1930s, the government used the development of samba as a way to unify Brazilian culture. As escolas de samba (samba clubs) expanded, Vargas used the style of music to wash away any signs of social struggle. The dictatorship prohibited any criticism during the parades to prevent any awareness of class struggle by the poor. Then, during the military dictatorship of the 1960s and ’70s, samba music became a symbol of resistance. One of the main artists who became a worldwide figure for his lyrics and music is Chico Buarque, who mixed popular culture and poetry to criticize human rights abuses in the country. From here the tide turned and we see it more as the happy and positive vibe most of us have known. It’s always fascinating to learn how music is such an important element of social history around the world and can create change in such powerful ways. 🍃 In 24 hours, Tom and I become 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒆 and 𝑮𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒚. Our trail names. The names that we were given on our first section hike on the Appalachian Trail in 2019. So what is a trail name and why do we take on a new identity when we step onto the A.T.? It all started on the Appalachian Trail in the 1940’s, when the sheer volume of hikers made it easier to know who was who by having nicknames. ‘John’, ‘Mary’ and ‘Zach’ are common names which could refer to a number of people, but ‘Bear Whisperer’, ‘Wrong Way’, and ‘Watermelon Man’ likely identify one specific person. This long standing tradition may have begun as a way for thru-hikers to identify and track each other, but has since become a right of passage as well as a unique form of self-expression. A trail name says something about a hiker’s personality, physical traits, habits or history that their given name never could. So for the next ten days, Tom and I will be known as ‘Granite’ and ‘Glory’. Tom is 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒆 for his insatiable love of New Hampshire (the Granite State) and his propensity to share that love with everyone he meets.😁 And I am 𝑮𝒍𝒐𝒓𝒚, because I give glory to my Creator… For every hike. For every mountain. For bodies that carry us these many miles. For EVERY DAY that we get to spend in this beautiful wilderness.
