Fortune Gym at the original spot on Sunset Blvd. This gym, that mat hosted some of my most cherished training memories. Kenny and Wade getting their black belts from Lars Wallin. Me building my MMA foundation as a white belt turning into blue. When you are living you don't realize at the time how special these moments are. I was lucky to make a few memories along the way. 5 days a week for years and then people move on. This weekend I competed in the Houston Open. I went in with no expectations, just focused on listening to my body, and came out with double silver in my weight division and the open weight class. I never thought I would get to compete again so this was one to remember. 💙 Thank you @wesleygannbjj & @bannunziato for coaching this weekend and @fortunegymboxing @unbroken_ptp for keeping me in shape. Another BIG thank you to my coach @travislutter & @team_lutter for mentally pushing me until I was able to get there myself. Moving toward purple belt now I feel the need to reflect on my Jiu-Jitsu journey. Lars Wallin, Kenny Gallo, and Wade Carpenter were the toughest black belts I have ever rolled with. Starting with Kenny and Wade when they were brown belts forced me to develop great defense and learn that the art of jiu jitsu is the art of the setup. Training with Lars Wallin who was Royce Gracie's sparring partner of 14 years I had the uncommon opportunity to learn really high level-elite jiu jitsu as a white belt into blue belt getting my fourth stripe from Lars. Lars Wallin had the uncommon philosophy that points are for pussies which I couldn't agree with more. Lars felt that biased point based systems were clouding the art of Jiu jitsu. Lars has what I still feel are the most advanced techniques that cut through a lot of excess. He was and is still the toughest sparring opponent I have ever experienced. I feel I am legitimately ready to transition into purple belt now. I am so grateful and thankful that I had the uncommon foundation built by these truly elite fighters. I have been to many different academies and schools around the USA but the ones pictured here are the ones that had the greatest impact on me as a martial artist. If you are thinking of taking time off from jiu jitsu don't. I personally took what has ultimately been a few years off with stuttered training since 2019. From 2011 to 2019 I was religious about strength and conditioning with drilling/sparring 5 days a week. Taking as much time off as I did made me realize that you are only as good as your last roll which in jiu jitsu there can be no time off. I am focused on sharpening my techniques learned and building upon the foundation that has been given to me by the world elite.
