Free Solo (2018) - Dir. Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi & Jimmy Chin This is a fairly basic documentary, but with an extraordinary subject, who does an outrageous thing. Alex Honnold climbs mountains without support and without ropes, in a practice called free-soloing. If he misses a hold, slips, stumbles or can’t continue, he dies. Most people try to limit their exposure to death, especially in their hobbytime, but Alex is clearly one of the human race’s outliers. Autistic, single-minded and incredibly talented, Alex has made a career of extreme climbing, achieving feats that no one in his generation can match. It is also obvious that he doesn’t do it for the accolades, he does it for the challenge and because climbing is a craft to him, of which he is a master craftsman. The documentary follows Alex, who lives quietly with his girlfriend in his van, as he attempts to conquer one of the climbing world’s toughest challenges. El Capitan is a 3000 ft, sheer rock wall in Yosemite National Park. On it, is a route named Freerider, of a graded difficulty no climber has ever successfully free-soloed, anywhere in the world. Others have tried and others have fallen to their deaths. Alex decides to attempt it, despite being injured. The filmmakers are concerned their presence might pressure Alex into making a deadly mistake and they debate whether they should film him at all as he could fall to his death at any point. They decide to go ahead. I watched this documentary in the IMAX and you could have heard a pin drop. As Alex scratches up the mountain and pauses at the most treacherous part, all you could hear was his breathing and the wind whistling off the rock face. It really is an incredible moment. You are watching a man betting his life on a few millimetres of a toe hold and his judgement on what to do next. It’s amazing to witness what the human mind and body in tandem with an unstoppable spirit can achieve. Free Solo est un petit peu la suite de The Dawn Wall (non pas du tout, mais je vous renvoie au post précédent). Toujours cette même paroi impressionnante, El Capitan mais cette fois un troisième larron, Alex Honnold, vise une ascension en " free solo". Kezako Le free solo c'est l'escalade à mains nues, seul et... sans corde. Bref, un faux pas, une mauvaise prise et vous êtes au mieux bloqué au pire ... mort. L'équipe du film a alors non seulement le défi de la prouesse technique, mais aussi et surtout de ne surtout pas interférer avec Alex. La déconcentration pouvant lui être mortelle. Au delà de la prouesse technique du film et surtout de ce projet fou, le film va s'intéresser aussi à la psychologie d'Alex. Car, soyons francs, être accro à de telles prises de risques n'est pas.. du plus commun. Et je ne peux alors pas vous en dire plus pour ne pas ruiner le visionnage mais vous serrez témoins de plusieurs choses hors du commun. Juste un petit point, qui résume bien le film : l'un des caméra men n'arrivait tout simplement pas à regarder tant le stress lui était insupportable. Mais je vous assure que vous, vous serez scotchés. Ajoutons au sujet passionnant, les images qui le sont tout autant. The Free Solo Director has made a shift in genre however, as he hopes to pioneer the first ever climbing themed horror film. Chin recently announced the film will be tiled “Whip” and will prominently feature anxiety inducing shots of people taking massive trad whips. “I wanted to do something different this time, you know, really push the envelope of what the climbing film could feature,” Chin said. “This is going to be totally unique though, it’s not just going to be your everyday weekend whippers. My crew has worked very hard to make sure we truly capture the experience of what it feels like to take a huge trad whip. The tattoo on his neck has begun speaking to him and has told him the date of the impending apocalypse. @dawoods89 has recently announced that the eye shaped tattoo on his neck has not only gained sentience and the ability to speak, but it also has begun making predictions about the coming collapse of society and when it will happen. During an interview Woods said, “Yeah man, it’s just like really freaky man. My tat just started talking about some pretty heinous stuff one day man, and I was like whaaaat? But like I guess I feel honored to be chosen to be like, a voice to the people, ya know?” Woods further explained that this strange development has really not impacted his life negatively. With Haloween approaching in the valley, a special visitor has been seen wandering around Camp 4. It seems as if The Ghost of Warren Harding has returned to remind all of us to party harder. That’s right, the Apparition of Batso himself has been spotted trying to urge climbers all over the Valley to not just focus on training and projects, but to also add in more eating, drinking, and farcing. Harding first appeared to a group of climbers from Idaho while they were eating dinner and tried to get them all to start a game of flip cup, which they respectfully declined. Since then has been seen handing out bottles of whiskey and wine, and raging into the early hours with anyone he can convince to join him. The Alpinist (2021) Directed by Peter Mortimer & Nick Rosen Watched: 12/10/2023 Rating: 6.5/10 It’s going to be tough for any documentary about rock climbing or free soloing to live up to Free Solo, but it’s still possible for others to be interesting. It’s spectacular what these people are able to do, and capturing that in a movie is always going to be thrilling. I like much of the footage in The Alpinist, and it’s an interesting exploration of its central subject, Marc-André Leclerc. But I wasn’t crazy about some aspects of its presentation and the creative elements from a documentary filmmaking perspective. I also didn’t really like the director putting himself in the movie, and the narration was really unneeded, sort of like the film had to be 90 minutes, and narrating was one way of cutting it down to that length. When the narration comes in at the end in particular and tries to summarise what we’ve seen while going over the movie’s themes, it’s embarrassingly shallow, and made me wish Werner Herzog had tackled this documentary instead, and injected it with his wonderful voice and eccentric way of speaking. The Alpinist is still very watchable, and works when it comes to spectacle and as a character study (for the most part when it comes to the latter). Это интересно ещё и с культурной точки зрения. Смена поколений, развитие техники лазанья. Вот раньше на стены вообще не так лезли оказывается! Увидела легендарную Линн Хилл. Она крутая. "Стена рассвета" 2017 Герои этой истории мне ближе всего. Их упорство откликается. И вообще, приятные ребята. Посмотреть, как разбивают лагерь на стене и живут там по много дней. Я впервые увидела как какают на стене😱 "Фри-соло" 2018 Мне кажется это лучшая документалка из всех. Качество съемки, композиция истории. Ей Оскар даже дали. Про одно одиночное восхождение Алекса Хоннольда. "Альпинист" 2021 Этот фильм впервые познакомил меня со стилем восхождения фри-соло. Я была в шоке. Подъем без страховки вообще. Trying to not be afraid, or trying to not be stressed shouldn't be the goal. That would be ridiculous in a way because we feel these emotions for a reason. When another dog comes charging yours you want that fear. When your dog rips the leash from your hands and chases after a truck, you want to be scared for their life. When medication isn't working the way you thought it would, you want to be disappointed. When someone mistreats your dog you want to be angry. The trick is to allow yourself the emotions and the awareness around them so that you can then choose how you want to act rather than react to the emotions. What if you could learn to be angry, sad, scared productively? Let the feelings come along for the ride and then choose how you want to show up? What if you could not bite your partner's head off when they ask you why you aren't ready to go out yet after you have just spent hours cleaning up dog poo spread over your whole house by your Roomba? You know, that kind of thing. (Though honestly, you have my permission to bite their head off in cases like that). The secret is to let your feelings come along for the ride but to not hand them control of the wheel, or as Alex put it: to step outside of them.
