Originally designed as a way for poor city children to stay in the countryside during the summer, Barnens Dag was created by an elementary school teacher called Agnes Lagerstedt after a similar program in Switzerland. In order to enable more summer colonies in more places, people began to arrange festivities and activities in different places to raise funds for this. A first Children's Day Party was organized in 1901 and gradually expanded to include more children and students from all over Scandinavia. We love these posters as they celebrate children, Sweden and all things joyous. A few months ago I ran into my brother and #SunsetPark alumni @lemon.andersen We go back along time. He reminded me about our time together as kids at the Fresh air fund. Anyone familiar with this program? If you’re not, let me give you a quick explanation of this genius experiment that wasn’t explained in the 1980s ad in slide 2. They thought it was a good idea to take young black & latino kids from the worst neighborhoods in NYC, during the height of the crack epidemic, to upstate NY, to camp outdoors. And to be supervised by teenagers from the same circumstances. So you can only imagine what situations transpired. 🤦🏻♂️😡 I hated it. Lemon and I spent most our time fighting kids from other neighborhoods. Makes me wonder if that’s where my deep-seated need to represent my neighborhood #SunsetPark began. I know there’s many lessons we consciously and subconsciously learned from that experience and it helped to shape us into the men we became for better or worse.
