This is the highlight of our hike today. I took this owl feather just the way one is supposed to… in a picture. It is illegal to take a feather even if it is found. This has been the law since 1918 in the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. This feather 🪶 is just were we found it. On the ground on a trail at Lake Seminole Park. . Look at how fuzzy the edges are. This enables the owl 🦉 to fly silently. So cool. Golden Rod Not to be confused with ragweed, goldenrod is a powerhouse for allergies because it's an all natural antihistamine. This beautiful plant is also astringent & antiseptic and can be used on small wounds or fungal infections in a salve. I enjoy it infused in tea for its anti inflammatory, antioxidant and nutrient contents. Amazingly, it also helps rid the body of toxins and heavy metals. Best if foraged in the spring for drying and used intermittently, especially when combined with other herbs. This would be a good choice for a local honey infusion for seasonal allergies !! How did the ruins of an old car get in these woods? This abandoned 1952 Packard is just off the trail in the Whipple Hill Conservation area in Lexington, MA. 🌲Whipple Hill is a 120-acre conserved forest of oak, hickory, and pine - and threaded with miles of trails, brooks, a pond, and a 375-foot summit from which you can see Boston to the east. It’s named for Joseph Whipple, who owned a vegetable and dairy farm here in the 1800s. 🌲The first European settler on this land was William Munroe, who cleared the hilly site in the 1600s. Besides the Munroe’s and Whipples, several families farmed this (very!) rocky land over the years - until the Town of Lexington acquired it in 1969 to protect it from development. 🐓Swipe to see a 1930s photo of the farm of one of these families - the Graziano’s (immigrants from Italy). Today, all that remains of their farmhouse in that photo are the front steps - sitting just off the trail near this ruin. Was this their Packard? Poor Man's Licorice is not on the menu even though it sounds like it should be. This fungus grows on dead trees and has a cup shape that becomes more broad and flat.
