🎬 ABIGAIL (2024)🎬 After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. 🍿SPOILER FREE REVIEW🍿 With their fourth horror romp, directing duo Radio Silence of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have cemented their place in modern horror cinema with Abigail; a hilarious, blood-soaked creature feature that is a pitch-perfect recipe of what is becoming the duo’s auteuristic traits. To clarify, Ready or Not and the two new Scream sequels are some of my favourite releases of recent, so it is no surprise that Abigail is a knockout. The directors are having the most fun at what they do best. The ensemble are clever and diverse. Barrera, Newton, and Stevens are having so much fun in this one - although Barrera continues to kick the ultimate ass. They deliver comedic beats while also offering painful portrayals in the visceral violence. The standout is the title antagonist played by Weir who seems to be enjoying playing the blood thirsty ballerina. The film wastes no time to maximize its full runtime, jumping right into the action. While previous films are no light fares, Abigail is arguably their bloodiest sighting as the duo takes any opportunity to rip body parts, exploding blood and guts across its stars. I did say “the directors are having the most fun at what they do best.” This does not mean it is their best feature. The runtime could get a bit long considering its limited settings, there were a few potential post-production errors I have to watch again to catch, and while the violence is fun, it can be a bit repetitive. Abigail is an absolute blast at the movies. Immaculate features many similarities to classics that have come before it, like Suspiria and Rosemary’s Baby, and mixes them into a unique setting that challenges the tropes of religious horror. The film faces unsettling themes head on with some visceral violence and dread that fills each scene. Sweeney gives Cecilia a wonderful arc, filled with pure innocence one moment, and manic the next. no matter how unsettling it may be, she is gives a star making performance. Though the film moves quickly, without spoiling too much, there is a tonal shift at the beginning of the third act. A plot twist can ground the film in a much more realistic setting, and Immaculate spits in the face of religious horror. While I enjoy the whackadoodle final act - warning: watch your TV volume - it can definitely be polarizing to viewers as the tonal shift is much more obvious than I would have hoped. Immaculate is a tripping journey through hell in one innocent woman’s eyes. It locks you in and spits you out, whether you like it or not. Strange World (2022) - “Am I offending you? I can’t tell.” ~Ethan Clade - On an exploration with his father, Searcher Clade discovered something that would literally grow to benefit the world. 25 years later, his discovery is threatened, bringing him to uncharted territory to find out why. - This was directed by Don Hall and Qui Nguyen, and written by Nguyen. I’m typically pretty up-to-date with Disney’s animated movies, have been for decades. I usually catch them in the cinema, but unfortunately missed this one (and fortunately missed Wish). But we’re caught up now! I remember hearing very little about this movie upon release, and I don’t think I actually know anyone who watched it. It wasn’t until just this last week that I finally checked it out and discovered the movie was controversial for having an openly gay main character, an interracial kiss/relationship, and a three-legged dog. And that’s apparently enough for some people to want to avoid this movie, and for certain countries to ban it altogether, adding to Disney’s recent financial fumbles. But I’m not racist or homophobic, and I love a cute dog, so I ended up having a pretty good time. Part of me hoped this was perhaps one of those future cult classics from Disney, like Treasure Planet or Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Those got traction long after theatrical releases and people still semi-talk about them now, and I feel that could potentially happen here too, because Strange World is about as fun as those films and pretty different from Disney’s standard movie in terms of world-building, setting and tone. There are no princesses, villains or magic in this movie. We have a totally original setting, and a story that’s sort of akin to classic adventure films, with an oddly classical score and aesthetic. The film perhaps shines the most in those regards. The futuristic look of the movie reminded me a bit of Meet the Robinsons, but the second and third act kind of looked like Journey to the Center of the Earth. Today for 🩵🍿WAYBACK WEDNESDAY🍿🩷 We’re taking it back to…2009. After watching Sucker Punch again earlier this year, I had to revisit Watchmen as it is the film that solidified Snyder’s director vision and his unique ways of storytelling in a graphic manner. With Watchmen it is a perfect fit for him, where the visuals of the graphic novel were brought to life by Snyder’s inventive mix of CGI and world-building. Trixie Mattel is a huge fan of Watchmen, and her recent praise for the film reminded me that I feel this movie deserves such a mature audience. I first saw Watchmen when I was 15 - I was young and only wanted to see some heroes kicking ass. While we see that, there is so much more beneath the surface here. Politics and personal issues are at the forefront, and action sequences are secondary to the plot. The characters and their history play the main role here, with a lot of their dynamics and group formed before them being a reasoning for the world falling apart. As a more mature viewer now, there is a lot of politics and themes beneath the surface to digest here. The internal relationships between the heroes and how Dr. Manhattan at the end of the day is flipped to be a common enemy by the public, it is a theme that still hits hard to this day. Visually, the film has aged SO well. The Talented Mr. Ripley, a deceptively misleading tale. This is one I’ve heard of and was interested to see. It wasn’t what I expected at all. This is a fun one to talk about because of the gay. It starts off seemingly simple with Matt Damon tasked on convincing someone’s son home. It even begins that way with his initial interactions, but once he settles in it’s clear he’s there to stay. It doesn’t even seem like in a bad way at first. I think yes Ripley wants Jude Law, but I also think he’s envious of him. At what point my Ma would say it’s weird to hear Jude Law without an accent, but I still thought he sounded English. I’m too used to his accent. The boat dispute is when I realized it was moving from a tragic romance to a completely different genre. His lust for him took it too far. The way he constructs his plan to get away with it is ingenious and insane. It’s clear he has talents to charm people, but it’s over ridiculous in the way he takes on Jude Law’s character. The way he lead Cate Blanchett to believe earlier he was him sets him up for this. That’s a specifically a weird thing to do, but it calls back on the envy. Maybe he was after him period. His talent becomes playing people, but I think one of his first mistakes was still remaining intimately close to it while someone’s dead. Somehow he gets away with it and the only way out of it for him is to take out who ever gets too close to the truth. I definitely wasn’t expecting a triple homicide. One thing I will say is they should lean into the gay side fully because it’s clearly there. Just give it to me, but it’s a great tease. I’ll definitely watch Andrew Scott’s take on the character now, but how could it get more charming then my favorite guy, Matt Damon. A solid eight. 🎬 KUNG FU PANDA 4 (2024)🎬 After Po is tapped to become the Spiritual Leader of the Valley of Peace, he needs to find and train a new Dragon Warrior, while a wicked sorceress plans to re-summon all the master villains whom Po has vanquished to the spirit realm. 🍿SPOILER FREE REVIEW🍿 The beginning of 2024 was packed with kung fu action as I binged the trilogy for the first time before seeing Po return to the big screen. This allowed me to see the flaws of this new entry that is proof that although the characters are still entertaining, the stories are losing imagination. Back in the recording booth is Black as Po who brings his charismatic personality as if no years have stretch between the last films. Awkwafina, who is becoming a household name for film voice acting (don’t get me started on Scuttlebutt), her voice fits the character of Zhen the best out of her past roles. The story takes the franchise on a new route, adding some creative new layers to the Kung Fu world. The action scenes are exciting and The Chameleon is the best villain Po has faced - mostly thanks to Davis’ portrayal. This film lacks the same energetic charm brought by the ensemble cast that is missing this time. It has all the ingredients of a franchise trying to save itself and introduce it to a newer generation of moviegoers to pass the torch onto. It takes the story outside its home to distract from the missing elements of the previous 3 films. While Dreamworks films continue to balance some mature and slapstick humour for all audiences, the film is void of as deep of a lesson for younger viewers compared to parts 1-3. It feels as though the emotional layers that made Kung Fu Panda so loveable before have faded. Beyto, is about a family from Turkey who is living in Switzerland when they find out their son is gay, and being very homophobic they devise a plan. They trick the son into returning to Turkey and once there they take his passport and hold him captive and force him to take part in an arranged marriage with a women. This leads to a lot of drama and heartbreak, but in the end it does end on a hopeful note. By the way, the son (left) knew his parents were homophobic, he was in the closet, living with and relying on them for financial support in his mid- to late-20's and decided to march in a pride parade with his boyfriend in the middle of the town where his family lives and then seems surprised when he is outed.
