🎬 ABIGAIL (2024)🎬 After a group of criminals kidnap the ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure, they retreat to an isolated mansion, unaware that they’re locked inside with no normal little girl. 🍿SPOILER FREE REVIEW🍿 With their fourth horror romp, directing duo Radio Silence of Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett have cemented their place in modern horror cinema with Abigail; a hilarious, blood-soaked creature feature that is a pitch-perfect recipe of what is becoming the duo’s auteuristic traits. To clarify, Ready or Not and the two new Scream sequels are some of my favourite releases of recent, so it is no surprise that Abigail is a knockout. The directors are having the most fun at what they do best. The ensemble are clever and diverse. Barrera, Newton, and Stevens are having so much fun in this one - although Barrera continues to kick the ultimate ass. They deliver comedic beats while also offering painful portrayals in the visceral violence. The standout is the title antagonist played by Weir who seems to be enjoying playing the blood thirsty ballerina. The film wastes no time to maximize its full runtime, jumping right into the action. While previous films are no light fares, Abigail is arguably their bloodiest sighting as the duo takes any opportunity to rip body parts, exploding blood and guts across its stars. I did say “the directors are having the most fun at what they do best.” This does not mean it is their best feature. The runtime could get a bit long considering its limited settings, there were a few potential post-production errors I have to watch again to catch, and while the violence is fun, it can be a bit repetitive. Abigail is an absolute blast at the movies. Since its release, Shrek 2 has cemented not only the green creatures in pop culture, it put Dreamworks at the forefront of mainstream kids entertainment; a position held by Disney for decades. At once the highest-grossing animated film of all time, Shrek 2 is a brilliant mix of comedy and imagination that bakes into an undeniable feast. From the parodies of centuries old stories like Snow White and Cinderella, to references like OJ Simpson, it is a comedy for all ages to enjoy. For years, millennials were in the rise of consumer culture and had experienced all Disney classics. When it came time to parody those stories, the Shrek franchise remains the best family-friendly modern comedy. Last year at the same period, I left Montreal to work on a French Canadian/French movie in South of France. I travelled in France before, but this was my first time discovering Camargue’s culture, shepherd world and spending as much time in the South of France. The movie “Le Berger” is about a French Canadian man leaving his job in Montreal to learn about the shepherd world and becoming one of them. I went there working as an assistant costume designer knowing I will be well served in term of breakdown to do on the costumes! We were also lucky finding lots of second hand garments 👌. I found a way to instal a funky functional spot in our work space. Love working outside! The movie should come out soon ✨ The entire team did a brilliant job! The Last Starfighter - 4K Greetings Starfighter! Because my teen years were in the eighties this movie fills me up to the brim with nostalgia. Yes, there’s an element in this film which makes it clearly aimed at the younger audience demographic. And some will call the CG visuals PlayStation 2 - like. But remember, this is 1984 we’re talking about. We hadn’t had the likes of The Abyss, Terminator 2 or even Jurassic Park, movies that contributed enormous in the Computer Generated Imagery department. But the sheer fun of “The Last Starfighter” is so contagious, you must be dead cold if you aren’t positively affected by it! If you can’t tell yet: I love this flick! Now to put it mildly, this isn’t a 4K release I was expecting, with the legacy visual effects, outdated CGI, rough compositing and eighties make-up effects. And the differences in relation to a standard high definition Blu Ray aren’t very evident. But, through the heavy film-grain, there is an uptick in detail and color is a bit more defined because of the Dolby Vision encode. Sound is sufficient, clear and at times immersive through the DTS-HD Master 5.1 track, but not for the full duration. I think it’s awesome when you look at how complete the collection of bonus features are. Interesting stuff about the CGI, the gaming aspect and retrospective interviews galore! Again, I never expected this much love for this quaint little movie! Immaculate features many similarities to classics that have come before it, like Suspiria and Rosemary’s Baby, and mixes them into a unique setting that challenges the tropes of religious horror. The film faces unsettling themes head on with some visceral violence and dread that fills each scene. Sweeney gives Cecilia a wonderful arc, filled with pure innocence one moment, and manic the next. no matter how unsettling it may be, she is gives a star making performance. Though the film moves quickly, without spoiling too much, there is a tonal shift at the beginning of the third act. A plot twist can ground the film in a much more realistic setting, and Immaculate spits in the face of religious horror. While I enjoy the whackadoodle final act - warning: watch your TV volume - it can definitely be polarizing to viewers as the tonal shift is much more obvious than I would have hoped. Immaculate is a tripping journey through hell in one innocent woman’s eyes. It locks you in and spits you out, whether you like it or not.
