More Langton's Ants on polyhedra. The rule used here is a minimal adaptation of the basic binary scheme: turn right on 0 and left on 1, and flip the cell value when moving on. The turn angles are the smallest nonzero ones, i.e. pi/3 or 60° for 6-fold vertices of the geodesic polyhedron. I first tested this rule in a 2D hex lattice about a year ago, and it made a distinctive laterally symmetric pattern. Here the symmetry is broken by the occasional 5-fold vertices. It is also worth noting that in 5-fold vertices, there is no way to continue straight forward, so the minimal left/right turning angles are actually smaller, i.e. pi/5. Depending on the random-seeded initial location and direction, I sometimes got these nice hexagonal details. To ensure I'd always get them, I switched from the icosahedral geodesic to a Goldberg polyhedron, shown in the second part. Now the laterally symmetric pattern is clear, at least for some time; the overall topology is still different from the 2D lattice. Since only one cell is being updated at a time, the overall progress is relatively slow, and here I'm doing ten updates per video frame. The earlier Life-like cellular automaton "cyclife" also works on an icosahedral geodesic sphere, using the same Conway-based rule. I seem to have hit some kind of a threshold here, as a lot of CAs either die out or fill the space quickly, but this one takes its time to bridge the gaps. In the square/cube lattices with cubical cells, this CA tends to make relatively stable line patterns of cells with the maximum value, with zero-value cells in between. The patterns are not so obvious in other lattices with spherical cells, so I thought I'd highlight the max-value cells by showing their connecting edges. It turned out quite a bit more complex than expected, as the max-value cells also appear at growth sites. So besides the static structures, the new edge visuals also highlight the dynamic action. If you're like us, one of the most exciting moments is when you arrive at Epcot by monorail, and glimpse everyone's favourite geodesic sphere through the window. Yesterday afternoon I did something I’ve never done in 26 years of visiting Walt Disney World…I finally got a Mickey ballon! Here’s what happened: I was walking around World Showcase with a friend when I saw a lot of Magic Kingdom style Mickey balloons being carried by guests around Morocco. I stopped to ask the cast member when they started selling balloons at EPCOT and she explained that they were part of a promotional video being shot and they were giving them out for free. As part of the abortive Project Gemini project planned for the mid-2000s, Spaceship Earth, at least as we know it, would have been transformed with a new ride experience, "Time Racers." This reboot of the attraction would have seen time-lapse photography and technology used to bring our journey more of a thrilling edge... including a section where ride vehicles would venture outside of the building! Many stories circulated around why this didn't happen, from finance through to the ride structure and load capabilities. Most of us will also remember the current overhaul of the park originally included a proposed upgrade to introduce more of a storytelling narrative, and change out sets to the later portions of the ride. This #spaceshipearthsunday let us have your opinions on which would be best - to leave the ride as it is, a classic? To transform to a more dynamic ride, or the more vague/magical storytelling makeover, that seems to have faded from the current plans? Scabiosa stellata The papery bracts of Scabiosa stellata are an example of perfect geometry. This most unusual plant produces delicate pale blue spherical flower heads, but is grown primarily for the seed heads which follow. Jutting vertically from the base of the plant on long stems, attractive pale blue flowers are followed by translucent papery, cone shaped bracts which accompany the mature seed. They are clustered together to suggest a delicate, lightweight geodesic sphere. At the centre of each cone, the remnants of the bloom open to form a perfect, thinly stretched star. When I see the geodesic sphere of Spaceship Earth for the first time each visit it feels incredible. I love it, I think I love it more than Cinderella Castle 😳 . Now, don’t get me wrong…I do not love Spaceship Earth the ride. It’s good for a rest, some air conditioning and a break from the hustle and bustle of the park, but come on, it needs an upgrade.
