“There is something about seeing someone who looks like you, that makes it more tangible.” Viola Davis I go back to this quote often. I was born and raised in Miami. And, we know Miami is in a state of its own thing. Everyone around me was Latin. All colors, from everywhere. We all spoke Spanish. Both English and Spanish. Only Spanish. Only English, but we understood what you were saying. Moving to Atlanta, almost 15 years ago, I saw we were here too, but not occupying the spaces that I was so used to seeing us in. It wasn’t until entering audition rooms and collaborating with friends (talking about my chicas @vivianachavez & @gabygabs) that I realized, what was missing was a spotlight shining on our community too. Last year, after attending the EDBI event right before the festival, I spoke with Linda Burns and shared how I felt, offered to put something together and if they were willing to collaborate with me to help shine that spotlight. She didn’t hesitate and immediately put our conversation into action. The ball got immediately rolling on a virtual panel. I will forever be grateful to @erika.ines.miranda @caitlinjhargraves @erikfromelbarrio & @mahaliapridgett for sharing their immense knowledge with the community. This year, Latinas in Media Atlanta is in person and we’re “Keeping the conversation moving forward in Film & TV”.
