A Matter of Choice King mixed media/panel 12” x 12” $750.00 each 2022 This body of work A Women’s Choice? was created from outrage of the dismantling of women’s right to an abortion in the 2022 Supreme Court case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The Supreme Court has gone rogue; their judicial overreach is unacceptable. They are methodically destroying our country. The Court is abusing its power in its continuing desire to strip away women’s rights to autonomy. They won’t stop there. We are headed back into the darkest of ages. The Court ignores the will and desires of this country’s population. The process used in creating these is called Décollage, a French word meaning to unstick. The process of unsticking is affiliated with artists of the New Realism (Nouveau Réalisme) movement of the 1960s France. They appropriated imagery in the public domain such as tearing posters off the public walls to be recycled into a new reality. Similarly, another technique they used was the layering of ripped posters over another, revealing the underneath layers. In my process I took images from printed material and the internet. I altered them though Xerox and Photoshop manipulation. Building up layers of paint and images, I would then tear, sand, or bury parts through the addition of layering more lacerated images. These panels progressed through many cycles of construction and deconstruction. Beside their primary weapons (the pike and the so-called Katzbalger short sword), they often carried a dagger as a secondary weapon. This beautiful late medieval dagger features a hardened spring steel blade which was tempered to a Rockwell hardness of approx. 48-50 HRC. It is full-tanged and has a fuller running on both sides about two-thirds down the blade. The steel guard slightly curves towards the blade and is composed of three quillons with ball-shaped, fluted finials. I. LOVED. THIS. SERIES. I have no idea how, after picking up the original trilogy in 2017, I completely missed the fact that the series continued. Easily my favorite sci-fi series of all time. Tons of action, lively characters, unbreakable bonds, vibrant world building, and a little sprinkle of romance made this story come to life. Many laughs were had and many tears were shed. I believe I’m still in the denial stage of grief… but I’ll deal with that later. I debated the ⚔️❤️ rating on this for a while, and even originally gave this series all ⚔️. However, I cannot deny that love is a huge motivator throughout the series, and I think it would be doing a disservice to not recognize the splash of romance that’s there. Let me be clear though: while this has some light romantic themes, you will be sorely disappointed if you’re a romantasy lover and have to have a strong romance plot line. As much as I want to be back in this world right now, there’s no release date for the last book, Red God. My guess is it’ll be out sometime in 2025. Keep your eyes peeled for screen news: rights were acquired, project was scrapped, rights were reacquired, and the project seems to have life, according to Pierce Brown. Although the “who” behind the network/streaming service is a mystery, we DO know that Pierce Brown has been very active in the creative process and protecting the integrity of the story and his vision. The first chunk of this book was rough reading. I did not enjoy reading the particulars of pagan Celtic morals. A friend convinced me to pick it back up. It’s just “lengthy expounding on what they got saved from,” she said. Push on through, she said; the rest of the book is worth it. Ok, ok. She was right. I always knew Patrick of Ireland had to be an important man in the history of the world. I just didn’t know how important. The author makes an interesting observation: how did Patrick succeed in evangelizing the Irish? He jarred the Irish on their one deep, visceral weakness: their fear of death. The gods want blood. Give them what they want, or we all die. Why the Irishman’s bloodlust and battle craze? He was afraid to die. Then Patrick came, unarmed. He told about a God who loves—a God who does not demand sacrifice, but sacrificed Himself instead. So this book is really a picture of the Irish without his fear of death, the power of a Celt who has been brought to kneel before the cross. I did not realize how true the title is. When Rome fell, literacy and the legacy of the classical world could easily have died with her—but God, in His gracious providence, carried a few seeds over to Ireland, where newly converted and imaginative monks read and copied every written word they could get their hands on. While the story of the gospel was being forgotten or warped in the Dark Ages of Europe, God was preserving His remnant. It is absolutely astounding how far and how tangibly the Irish missionaries’ influence spread onto the continent in the 6th and 7th centuries. The gospel WILL go forth to all nations. Sometimes, God uses unexpected people to do it…like rough-hewn converted pagans. Happy Monday! The first thing my 4yr old son said to me this morning was 'mummy, can I have a chill day today, I'm tired from the weekend'. No such luck pal, back to work and nursery for us all. We had a busy weekend with my dad staying and a family gathering, then I had the bright idea of challenging my wee one to a four mile cycle yesterday 😅 (the weather was just so nice ➡️➡️). So I'm still on Song of the Huntress that I started last week. I've got 100 pages left and I'm sensing a dramatic ending. The writing is hypnotic and there are some feisty female warriors and the research put into this book is clear in the vivid and beautiful detail. I've gotta say though, I prefered Sistersong (it's one of my favourite ever reads so would be difficult to top that!). The pacing in Song of the Huntress peaks and troughs so I've found myself a bit lost at times. Plus, I think I hyped it up in my head too much. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing if Ine steps up to the challenge in the last 100 pages, I've been rooting for him from the start. Have you read this or Sistersong?
