𝗔𝗵𝘀𝗮𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯 We are delighted to announce that Global Shaper Alumnus Ahsan Rony has been awarded the National Environment Award 2023 in the category of Environmental Education and Promotion (Individual Category)! Ahsan Rony is a dedicated social entrepreneur, environmental activist, Ashoka Fellow, and founder of Green Savers. His organization focuses on environmental issues, urban agriculture, urban forestry, and landscape management. In 2023, he received the Bangabandhu National Agriculture Award, the highest national recognition for agriculture in Bangladesh. He is a member of the executive committee of the Society of Experts on Environmental Development (SEED) and Bangladesh Poribesh Andolon (BAPA). He is also an International Exchange Alumni under the IVLP of the U.S. Department of State and an alumnus of the U.S. Forest Service Urban Seminar 2018. He founded Green Savers Association in 2010 to promote urban forestry and agriculture and spread environmental education in primary schools nationwide. His efforts have led to the creation of over 5,500 rooftop gardens and the establishment of 280 Green Clubs and Oxygen Banks in educational institutions. Additionally, Green Savers operates a Tree Hospital and a Mobile Plant Clinic in collaboration with Dhaka North City Corporation. Green Savers also serves as the secretariat for the Planned Urban Greening Strategy for Dhaka North City Corporation. Ahsan Rony is the co-founder of CSR Window Bangladesh. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the Prime Minister’s Award for Environmental Contribution (2013), Joy Bangla Youth Award (2015), Channel I Nature Care Award (2016), U.S. Forest Service recognition (2018), Urban Resilience Award (2019), Ashoka Fellowship (2019), and Bangabandhu National Agriculture Award (2023). In many coastal areas of Cartagena, Colombia, communities lack access to clean drinking water. They live near estuaries flowing with contaminants such as agrochemicals, sewage, and untreated urban waste. Partnering with @wavesforwater, the @globalshaperscartagena Hub has provided 250 families around Cartagena with easy-to-use water filters to remove biological toxins from the water supply and combat preventable diseases. Since 2011, Waves for Water has partnered with Global Shapers in over twenty cities to identify and reach communities in need, providing filter systems to over 25,000 people. #GlobalShapers #Impact

Edge of Extinction: Mountain Biodiversity in the Face of Climate Change Amidst the majestic peaks and tranquil valleys of mountain ecosystems lies a fragile web of life facing an unprecedented threat from climate change. As temperatures rise alarmingly, these biodiverse havens are witnessing rapid transformations, pushing countless species to the brink of extinction. Unlike their lowland counterparts, mountain species struggle to migrate uphill swiftly enough to escape the changing climate, leading to a phenomenon known as habitat squeeze. This habitat squeeze is expected to lead to significant biodiversity loss, with up to two-thirds of mountain species facing extinction by the century’s end. A recent study published in Nature paints a concerning picture of the future of mountain biodiversity. The research identifies 17 mountain ranges worldwide as “climate velocity hotspots” experiencing rapid warming that outpaces the global average. Last weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in an inspiring panel discussion at the @globalshapersibadan Event themed "Stories That Shape". The topic was "Breaking the Brown Roof Barrier" and I was joined by my fellow distinguished barrier breakers, the brave Ronke Giwa and brilliant Ademayowa Fadare, with the amazing Marvelous Adelaja as the moderator. Throughout the discussion, I emphasized the crucial role that your mindset, self-leadership, vision, compassion, knowledge, decisions, courage, attitude, quality of relationships, selflessness, thinking and systems can play in breaking barriers. I shared with the audience the conception of the inspiring work of @thefamefoundation , which is led by a community of youthful change-makers providing high-quality transformative secondary education solutions to the next generation of leaders in Nigeria. The foundation aims to empower young people to take action and create a future where every child sees themselves as a leader and future shaper. However, I also noted that many young people in Ibadan are passionate and ambitious but lack the knowledge, foresight, character, patience, consistency, discipline, and resilience that building solutions and breaking barriers require. To break the "brown roof barrier", young people in #Ibadan must be intentional about overcoming their limiting beliefs, dysfunctional systems, old systems of thinking and dare to write their own stories. I closed by encouraging young and aspiring leaders and change-makers to seek to break barriers from a place of knowledge and understanding of the obstacles they will face. I urged them to recognize that they are capable of doing something groundbreaking, and possibly even greater if they are willing to open their eyes to see opportunities, seek to know the price, pay the price, stay focused, and keep evolving. It feels good to have reflected and shared about breaking so many barriers on my journey, and I am glad my life and results have inspired so many others to break barriers. Founded in 2022, the startup secured $3.8 million in pre-seed funding led by Global Founders Capital and Spartan Group in November. Before Wind, Fahad was part of the founding team and head of product at Pathao, where he launched services such as food delivery, payments, and ride-hailing in Bangladesh and Nepal. Did you know? We communicate in more ways than one. Communication is more than just the words we use to convey information; it may also be non-verbal. At times, our non-verbal methods of communication give a different meaning to our verbal messaging than we initially perceived. At the Hub, we believe that what you say and how you say it are equally important in ensuring that the person or audience you are communicating with understands you. Hence, on the 4th of May, the Hub organized a workshop at the University of Papua New Guinea on "Understanding Your Communication Style." This was one of our hub's activities designed to assist our members assess their present communication practices and adjust their approach moving forward to each individual person and situation to ensure their messages are understood accurately. This adaptability fosters collaboration, builds trust, and promotes a positive working environment. We would like to thank Bryan Earles, our hub member, and INDECO founder and principal consultant for facilitating an insightful session with us. Exciting news from the @globalshaperskano Hub! Their annual Clothing Drive project is back, and this year, they’re taking it to the next level with their “Fill the Truck” Donation Fare. Each year, the Harmattan sweeps through Kano, bringing chilly winds and health risks, and ensuring everyone in the community stays warm and protected is vital. The Kano Hub’s Clothing Drive project collects warm clothing, blankets, toiletries, and more to support those in need. Each kilogram of donation brings warmth and serves as a ticket for fun activities and raffle entries at their event. This initiative aims to provide relief to marginalized groups who are most affected during the cold season. The project also includes health promotion services, such as informative talks to educate beneficiaries on the importance of protection against cold weather-related health risks. Unveiling our Global Shapers Kathmandu Hub’s “जलवायु रक्षकको हाते पुस्तिका”! As a part of the #GRAPE project, we launched our “Climate Protector Handbook” on the 10th of May, 2024 during the second session of our Global Talk Series. This book is a call to action for tangible change that encapsulates our hub’s commitment to create awareness about climate change and its impacts amongst children to foster a generation of climate protectors by contributing towards instilling climate education into the hearts of every child in Nepal. We at @ktmshapers recently completed the second session of our Global Talk Series on "Water Stewardship:Managing Water Resources for Sustainable Agriculture" on 10th May 2024. We had an international speaker, Mr. Satyajit Bhatkal, CEO of Paani Foundation and Director of the renowned Indian television show 'Satyameva Jayate' and national speakers including Mr. Ajaya Dixit, Water Historian and Ms. Bibhuti Ojha, an associate professor at the Civil Engineering Department of Nepal Engineering College. At the program, we also got to exhibit the work that we've been doing in our projects @shapingpoliticalfutures @mentalhealthnep @nepalkokala among others. Moreover, we also released our book 'Jalbayu Rakshak ko Haatepustika' which we will be distributing in Surkhet and Dhangadhi regions in the coming weeks. ITA 💧Per passare ai più piccoli il concetto di impronta idrica ci siamo basati sul gioco e sul tatto: per prima cosa abbiamo messo a confronto il peso di un frutto e di un capo di abbigliamento, rivelando ai bambini come il peso non sia in realtà un indice diretto dell’acqua consumata per produrre un oggetto, nascosta nelle tante fasi di produzione; Abbiamo poi proseguito con un gioco per mostrare efffettivamente le proporzioni tra le quantità d’acqua necessarie per ottenere un frutto e un capo d’abbigliamento, facendo loro capire che il rapporto può essere di centinaia di volte. Se per fare un pomodoro i bambini hanno versato solo 5 vaschette d’acqua da una grande bacinella ai piedi del facilitatore, per fare una maglietta ne sono servite ben cento! L’acqua nella bacinella d’origine è presto finita, sottolineando come una risorsa preziosa ed esauribile vada tutelata e protetta, con le nostre scelte di acquisto e di consumo. ENG 💧 To convey the concept of water footprint to the children, we relied on play and touch: first, we compared the weight of a piece of fruit to that of a piece of clothing, revealing to the children how weight is not actually a direct indicator of the water consumed to produce an object, hidden in the many production stages. We then proceeded with a game to effectively show the proportions between the amounts of water needed to obtain a piece of fruit and a piece of clothing, helping them understand that the ratio can be hundreds of times different. If, for making a tomato, the children only poured 5 cups of water from a large basin at the facilitator’s feet, to make a T-shirt, a hundred were needed!
