I’ve been in Scotland for less than 48hrs and I’m definitely in love!! Edinburgh is such a beautiful city, and everyone I’ve met so far has been lovely. Yesterday was a very lazy day with nothing planned, so I just walked around and did a bit of sightseeing in the afternoon. So far, the hills haven’t killed me yet, but I haven’t attempted any of the big ones yet, lmao. Today I went to Holyrood Palace and the King’s Gallery for a special exhibit on Georgian fashion. It was a great little display, and after much hemming and hawing, I bought the book of course! Yesterday was an absolutely exhausting day! I finally made it to London after 36hrs of travel, with one entire day of my trip wasted in Boston because of airplane technical difficulties. I just think the universe is convinced that I must depart the US at Logan airport every time I fly to London, lmao!! I checked into my hotel room, which is in the basement and feels like a closet that happens to have a bed in it (picture to come later), and then girded my loins for a trip to the British Museum. As I said in my story yesterday, I was fully ready to play “Is it stolen? Probably” all through the museum, but I gave up really fast. It’s all stolen except for the Anglo Saxon and Romans in Britain collections. The Sutton Hoo artifacts were truly beautifully displayed, and I thought it was funny looking at the jewelry displays and going “I have a reproduction of that ring from @armourandcastings!” 😆😆 I saw maaaany familiar rings, brooches, clasps, and belt fittings. I was also amazed at the delicacy of the Ancient Greek and Mesopotamian jewelry that was on display. It’s truly incredible work to make such thin, intricate designs without any of our fancy modern tools. As always, more pictures to come in the stories!! Now, I’m off to explore the @vamuseum today. Rhodos Stad staat op de lijst van het Werelderfgoed van Unesco en is eigenlijk een groot openluchtmuseum. Het prachtige oude stadscentrum stamt uit de middeleeuwen. Een impressie in 5 foto's: 1. Bij de haven liggen niet alleen veel lokale bootjes, ook cruiseschepen leggen aan voor een dagje Rhodos. Aan de ingang van de oude haven staan drie oude windmolens. Ze zijn als enigen overbleven van een rij van 14 middeleeuwse windmolens die werden gebruikt om tarwe te malen. 2. De stad barst van de sfeervolle restaurantjes, maar onze favoriet is deze: midden in de oude stad wordt dit restaurant gedeeltelijk opgeslokt door een enorme boom. 3. Struinen over de kinderkopjes in het centrum van Rhodos. 4 en 5. Het Paleis van de Grootmeester van de Ridders van Rhodos. Het paleis is gebouwd in de Byzantijnse tijd (7e eeuw). In de 14e eeuw werd het kasteel verbouwd en vergroot in opdracht van de johannietorde die zeggenschap had op Rhodos. In de 19e eeuw werd het helaas verwoest door een explosie, daarom is het huidige paleis een reconstructie (begin 20e eeuw) en doet het dienst als museum. Het blijft indrukwekkend.
Zouden ze denken 'goh wat een hoop stenen' of stiekem toch een klein beetje aanvoelen dat de geschiedenis hier voor hun neusjes voor het oprapen ligt? (Spreekwoordelijk dan hè...). De #Akropolis van Lindos dateert uit de 10e eeuw voor Christus, de tijd waarin de Doriërs #Lindos stichtten. Het meest prominente bouwwerk binnen de Akropolis, de Tempel van Athena Lindia, werd oorspronkelijk gebouwd in de 6e eeuw voor Christus (onder de heerschappij van Cleobulus, een van de zeven wijzen van Griekenland).
Het schilderachtige dorpje #Lindos op #Rhodos, met een wirwar van geplaveide straatjes waar je doorheen kunt wandelen. Bovenop de rots zie je de #Acropolis van Lindos. Dit is één van de best bewaarde tempelruïnes van heel #Griekenland en prijkt hoog bovenaan een heuvel. Vanuit het dorpje is het een klim van 500 treden naar boven, maar dat is zeker de moeite waard en goed te doen met kinderen. En wij vonden het prima te doen met jonge kinderen. Niet alleen de ruïne, maar ook het uitzicht is adembenemend.

Salzburg. Other than the name might suggest, the castle is not made out of salt but bricks. I was definitely disapointed to say the least since I had expected a well flavoured architecture. Laguna Colorada in Bolivia! Dit knalrode meer ligt op 4000 meter hoogte en steekt fel af tegen de omgeving. De rode kleur ontstaat door de algen die in het meer leven. Je kunt er niet makkelijk komen, Laguna Colorada ligt nogal in the middle of nowhere. Wij bezochten het meer onderweg van Chili (San Pedro de Atacama) naar Uyuni in Bolivia, op een magische 4-daagse trip per 4WD.

Een laatste blik op Valle de la Luna en San Pedro de Atacama, de uitvalsbasis voor die deel van de Atacama Desert (slide naar foto 3). Het dorpje bestaat letterlijk uit een paar straten en huisjes die zijn afgewerkt met modder.
Wandelen door een maanlandschap op aarde! Zoals we in de vorige post al meldden is Valle de la Luna ("Vallei van de Maan") onderdeel van de zeer droge Atacama Woestijn. In dit gebied werd een prototype van een Marsrover (een verkennervoertuig voor Mars) getest. Door het droge en onbegaanbare terrein komt deze plek namelijk aardig in de buurt van de realiteit op Mars 👽
De rode grond in Valle de la Luna (Chili) is zo droog dat het in schubben uiteen barst. Dat geldt overigens voor veel plekken in de Atacama Woestijn.

Valle de la Luna ("vallei van de maan") in #Chili is één van de droogste plekken op aarde. Zoals je op de foto ziet, lijkt dit gebied inderdaad op een maanlandschap. De vallei ligt in de Atacama Woestijn, waar het op sommige plaatsen in de afgelopen 100 jaar niet heeft geregend. Maar de rotspartijen en zandformaties zijn adembenemend. Je ziet het zoutige, witte oppervlak van een drooggevallen meer en de donkere gaten van grotten.
