A pair of very fine Marly Horses; of smaller scale and beautifully modelled in lustrous, richly patinated bronze. France, circa 1860. The Marly Horses are two magnificent Carrara marble groups sculpted by Guillaume Coustou [the elder] (France, 1677 – 1746). Coustou, a sculptor of the Baroque and Louis XIV style, was a royal sculptor for Louis XIV and Louis XV and became Director of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1735. The horses were commissioned by Louis XV for the entrance to the grounds of the Château de Marly and executed between 1743 and 1745. They depict two beautiful rearing horses with their grooms. The originals were moved to the Place de la Concorde in Paris in 1794, becoming symbols of the spirit of liberty during the Revolution. Restored in the 1840s, they were moved again to their current location; a former courtyard in the Richelieu wing of the Louvre Museum, which was renamed the 'Cour Marly' in their honour. This painting, showing the Forum Romanum, was painted by one of the German artists, who lived and worked in Rome during the early 19th century. After studying in Dresden, Dietrich Wilhelm Lindau (1799-1862) settled in Rome at the age of 21 and spend his entire life there; buried close to the Cestius pyramide. At that time, artists and writers from many countries – including the states of the German Confederation – moved to the “Eternal City” to study ancient art. In the years that followed, they attracted a growing group of like-minded people and formed an artists‘ colony. A custom arose among the artists of welcoming new arrivals at the Milvian Bridge, the Ponte Molle, whereby the newcomer gave his friends a barrel of wine to mark their debut. In the course of the institutionalization of a spring festival for German-speaking artists, the Ponte Molle Society was created in 1813/1814 and Dietrich Wilhelm Lindau was one of the founding members. The members adopted the manners of a knightly order for fun. This society soon became known in Rome by organizing a carnival parade every year around May 1st in the Campagna Romana to the ancient travertine quarries on the banks of the Aniene near Tor Cervara (Torre Cervaro), where it was known as the “Cervarafest” or – according to the Roman vernacular – as “carnevale dei Tedeschi” a bivouac with “Olympic Games” was held.
