Grant Green - Idle Moments (1965) Maybe one of the coolest Jazz records out there. First time I heard this album I was mesmerized. I grew up with Tom Waits being my favorite artist, and this instantly reminded me of Alice. It’s a perfect rainy day coffee shop album. It’s also the most laid back I’ve ever heard Joe Henderson! Bobby Hutcherson‘s vibes really bring out the “chill” throughout the whole album. Grant is super laid back and smooth as hell on the guitar. The title track is 14 minutes long, but it never wastes a note. Apparently on the first take the band was confused how many bars the chorus would be so it stretched the song out. The producer thought they should try a shorter version, but upon re-listening to how perfect the first take was they put it on the final album. This week’s update on our master bathroom remodel for those who have asked, as you can see, it’s starting to look like an actual room again! The drain finally came in for the shower and all of the drywall has finally been put up. Next step will be for all the dry wall taping to be done. This will be started on Wednesday so this will give us a bit of a reprieve from having to get up early for the next few days. Fourteen minutes and fifty-eight seconds of perfection. The title track of Idle Moments could not be any better. The recording was supposed to be half as long, but all the players doubled up on their solos, and the retake done as originally intended was missing something so the long take went on the album. When things that go wrong prove right… .
