NAD 3020 Series 20 recap It started to buzz on startup...faded from left channel to the right. Well...it was clear - it´s time. These 45 yo capacitors were at the end of their journey. Replaced all of them with Nichicon caps and 2 Wima films, also went a little higher on filter caps capacitance. Here is another Classic NAD 3020 with the cover off, unlike any other you have seen! We visited one of our techs who had called me previously about a NAD 3020 we had taken to him for a service. This one belonged to a customer, it wasn’t working properly & hadn’t done so for many years. Very disappointed, he put it away to deal with it another day. It held a lot of sentimental value (bought new 1979) & he was frustrated that he couldn’t enjoy it. Finally decided he should get it fixed & brought it to us. Now there is nothing any audio technician likes more is to open a unit up & see non factory “modifications” inside. NOT! The number of “techs” who think they know more than the factory…..well it beggars belief! We see it more often than you think. Anyway this one had a number of “modifications” which left our highly experienced tech scratching his head. What is the additional transistor mounted on the chassis for? What about the board with the blue relay? Protection circuit possibly? What are the additional poorly mounted resistors for? Now sometimes well thought out & properly engineered modifications can be a good thing but in this case they weren’t! When the owner got this unit back it worked for a little while & then, not surprisingly, started to play up. And to quote the owner…”the amp sounded WORSE after it came back from this so called “tech”! So the mods did NOTHING to improve sound quality or reliability! And that should be the end goal of making changes. So our tech will strip out all the modifications, return it to factory standard & then repair & service. Really looking forward to seeing this classic amp back up & running at its best. And then the look on our customers face when I demonstrate it to him in our shop before he takes it home! In the world of Classic Hi Fi the original NAD 3020 Integrated Amplifier is a genuine legend! The largest selling integrated amplifier of all time. Outstanding value for money by offering performance way beyond its price point. Even though this model had an output of “only” 20 watts per channel, clever design meant it sounded much bigger & handled musical peaks with aplomb. Plus its ability to drive inefficient speakers meant it was quite easy to match with most speakers. So it really punched well above its price point! It was so good many competitors were forced to offer similar products. Our example is a very rare Silver faced version. Interestingly the Silver faced versions had a genuine brushed alloy face plate where as the better known NAD “dark grey” finished versions used a cheaper painted plastic face plate! I have seen paint worn through on heavily used examples & also warped plastic face plates. On our example, to clean & detail thoroughly, the face plate was removed plus the lid was repainted. Before we did this the electronics had an extensive service including the replacement of many capacitors. Now ready for a buyer looking for a real classic! I preordered pretty much every one-step as soon as you could, but after the DSD controversy, I cancelled most of them. This was one I just had to hear, and I am glad I didn’t cancel it. I have owned no less than 10 different pressings of this album, and this one by @mobilefidelityofficial crushes them all. The detail and soundstage is incredible. The NAD 3020a is the successor to the legendary 3020. It includes an MC cartridge option on the Phono input and features a slight redesign. However, it sounds very similar to the 3020 model. I bought this unit from its first owner, hoping it would be in good technical condition. Unfortunately, it had been modified, and some parts were replaced with very poor soldering skills. I had to work on it and discovered that the quality of the circuit board is much worse compared to the 3020. It's possible that this is specific to this particular amplifier. The connections were incredibly fragile, and some of them were basically pulled apart by my desoldering gun despite my careful handling. Some transistors were literally detached from the board without any connection. It was challenging to get it working again, but it was worth the effort. NAD 3020 in direct comparison with NAD 7020. While the prices of well known 3020 are constantly going up it’s very much worth to consider buying 7020. This particular one I bought for 50€ which is basically nothing for what it can do. I needed just to replace some capacitors ,light bulbs, clean the switches and potentiometers and it was ready to work. The difference in performance of those two was negligible, and if I’d have to choose a better one in this case it would be the 7020. This album made a huge impression on me as a young lad. It instigated my investigations into #reggae which led me down a rabbit hole and shaped me as a bassist. This first US pressing is sublime as it is pressed on audiophile vinyl. It’s as if they knew they had a masterpiece hit record on their hands. “Aenima” by #toolband is one of those #grail type of records if you are looking for an original. There are tons of counterfeit, unofficial pressings and they may be just fine, but I lucked into an original copy in a small collection I bought a while back. Some of the key components to identifying an original pressing are shown here: BMG logo near the barcode, translucent vinyl, catalogue number is impossible to see on the spine, and by listening, the soundstage is utterly incredible.
