Todays harvest that we will be preparing for the @valleyviewabfarmersmarket on Saturday. I still have so many potatoes and carrots in the ground but there is no rush to pick them. Tomorrow afternoon I’ll pick beets so their greens stay as fresh as possible for the market and some carrots with greens for the few that love a pretty bundle of carrots with their tops. I do still have green beans to pick. Not sure how many will be available or if I’ll keep the rest just for myself. Comparison is the thief of joy. I have to remind myself of this constantly. I follow so many amazing, inspirational flower farmers and I'm constantly seeing nicer bouquets and bigger gardens and more interesting varieties of flowers. My inner dialogue is a constant, ongoing battle between "you're doing great" and "you're not doing enough because look". I have to remind myself that when I'm not stressing about what others are doing, I'm happy with what I've accomplished and how things are going. I remind myself that there's 8 billion people on this planet and there's room for me to grow flowers too, even if it doesn't look the same for me as it does for others that I watch. I remind myself that if I constantly measure myself against some arbitrary scale that exists in my head, I will never be content. I got rabbits this year, SPECIFICALLY for their 💩. I've got a 💩 collection system set up under neath the kennels I've managed to get built so far 😅 and a few days ago I did my first rabbit poo "tea" application to the dahlias and the pumpkins. Well. Sometimes, when a lady is being "difficult" ask not what's wrong with HER, but what YOU have done wrong 😆 I feel like this lesson applies to growing certain flowers.... And also to some relationships. This was my first year growing Canterbury bells. I grew four different colours, white, lavender, pink and royal purple. Ive made some mistakes with this one for sure. But instead of deciding not to grow her again, I'm trying to figure out where I've gone wrong so I can do better. She's just absolutely stunning. A few lessons I think I've learned with Lady Canterbury: Plant closer together and make sure she has netting. This is a girl who wants her friends close and needs lots of support. I'm still debating on pinching. Some sources say she will make one central stem and that's it. But I'm noticing on some that I think I pinched that I may actually get more than one stem off it. She's here for a good time though, not a long time, so I am going to direct seed some calendula around her now because it will grow fast, and next year I'll show something in with her sooner than mid July 😬 oops. Anyone have any other tips for growing Canterbury bells?
