Mycelium & wood exploration pt. 1 My intro to wood professor has been wonderful in allowing me to spend the class doing mycelium exploration. I’m interested in figuring out how wood and mycelium, two things inextricably interwoven in nature can interact within the material world of humans. My challenge for this project was figuring out how to create a “floating mold”. Funny enough I ended up just tightly wrapping cling wrap around mounds of mycelium mix to get the shape I hoped for. This was before I got my hands of sculpting mix (which I used in my second exploration project). My hope is that they can support each other to be apart of a “sustainable world”, whatever that means. From this project, I realized that I need to think differently about how to get mycelium “flush” once it’s dry. In the North sea, near Heligoland lies a floating island. This island is completely made out of the sea weed called kelp. It helps kelp grow, and it helps it sink. By sinking, it sequesters the post industrial levels of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. And by growing it helps the marine eco system revitalize itself. When we harvest some parts of it we can eat it, it is highly nutritious. This is Myco (Mycelium composite) a biological building material that is grown in a natural process and not manufactured. It consists of mushroom roots (mycelium), agricultural waste, and sawdust. This substrate can be moulded into any desired shape as the mycelium acts like a natural glue that binds the waste components together and creates a shell over them. It takes only a few weeks to grow and has proven successful building material properties - it is fire-resistant, insulating, and as stable as OSB boards. These three Large Round Seeds 2023 are in essence about latent and potential energy; energy within the soil and earth transformed within seeds and the emerging growth. Image by @rachelhoilephotography The abstract forms are suggestive of seeds emerging from the earth. The coppiced stems suggest sprouting, green shoots and windblown aids to dispersal. Materials include stoneware clay smoke fired and wood fired; and a variety of coppiced stems including birch, willow and white poplar. My making is slow, seasonal and meditative: - the growing and gathering of coppiced material; the weaving of layers; the hand coiling of the clay. Fungal Matters - the guidebook! This has been a year's worth of collaborative work and putting together our processes on paper - well, digitally at least. We have been wrangling together all of the documentation we have produced over our journey of experimentation and of learning with this non-human organism. Pearlescence of the Future My project predicts a future in which oysters are completely extinct and growing and harvesting pearls will no longer be possible. Nacre is an outstanding organic-inorganic composite material, and it is the most studied material within the science community. However, what if there were no oysters or molluscs left for us to study? The initial idea originated from concentrating on raising the conservation importance of molluscs species in aquatic ecosystems, along with environmental challenges like global warming, overexploitation, the lack of worldwide pearl supply and the continuing increase in price. Here's one fungal friend you've most likely come across during a dreamy stroll through your local forest, but perhaps one you've never considered when thinking about mycelium biofabrication! Fomes fomentarius.. or a far easier way to remember them.. Horsehoof mushroom. It forms large fruit bodies along tree trunks (bracket fungus) resembling a horse's hoof, thus the name. FF is a popular strain for mycomaterials and has actually been used for many generations in some parts of Europe! The fruiting body - the conk - has been traditionally used to create Amadou, a spongy leather material with various practical applications. If it's growing it you're interested in, its mycelium is incredibly strong and resistant, it also forms a soft foamy texture on it's white outer membrane which makes it aesthetically beautiful! Check out our lab notes on the platform, share and support if you want to see better materials grown from nature :) Fungal "leather" could help address sustainability problems when farming and using animal leathers, as they can have similar structures to animal skins and perform physically like leathers.
