It's hard to live in New Zealand without encountering the work of local landscape photographer Andris Apse. Rather than just turning up to a scenic spot and hoping for the best, he's been known to consult charts to calculate the best date for the sun's illumination of his chosen subject. However, Westland's Lake Mapourika, along the world-renowned scenic highway, is nearby where he lives and he would have visited the lake on many a foggy day to get the stunning images he has. I'm not sure how he felt about the heavy blue posterisation applied to my cover of The Healing Lake, and I do wonder how one with natural grey fog might have worked. The album was produced by Jon Mark and was the first of my albums distributed around the world, especially Europe, by his record label White Cloud. This week on "Radio Architecture with Ilana Razbash" we welcome NELA TRIFKOVIC to the studio! Nela Trifkovic (@balcanette) is a Bosnian-Australian musician and performance maker with 25 years of practice in music and theatre. She studied music composition, piano, voice and performance making at WAAPA, and VCA, where she completed doctoral studies in 2013. Since then, her main project has been as the artistic director, composer, arranger, and singer in the ensemble SARAY Iluminado (@sarayiluminado) , performing Balkan and Sephardic Jewish folk music and original composition. Nela and the ensemble have performed extensively nationally at festivals and venues such as The Mona Foma, The Melbourne Recital Centre, Cygnet Folk Festival and FOJAM. In 2019, a trio version of the ensemble made a European Debut at the Folk Music circuit in Italy. Nela loves working in multi-faceted environments and bringing together professional artists and members of various CALD and BIPOC communities, united by a common goal of heart-centered creative expression. She has performed, composed and presented academically in Europe, Asia, Australia and USA. Really interesting hike at @sugarloafpark last night: Nocturnal Serenades, led by Jack Hines (@eartothewild). We were lucky enough to have a Common Poorwill and a Great Horned Owl join the party, along with lots of other more commonly heard birds in Sugarloaf (e.g., California Quail, American Robin, Spotted Towhee, Pacific Slope Flycatcher). If you ever have an opportunity to go to an outing with Jack Hines, jump on it. Jack Hines (eartothewild.com) does the Ear to the Wild podcast on local NPR station KRCB (norcalpublicmedia.org/environment/ear-to-the-wild). For example, on 4/12/2024 he did "The Headwaters of Sonoma Creek in Winter" (based on recordings in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park). Jack works with Bernie Krause. You may have seen the recent article in the Guardian: "No birdsong, no water in the creek, no beating wings: how a haven for nature fell silent." I did a pre-hike prior to the Nocturnal Serenades event. From my sketchbooks – Sketching during a performance of the musica-viva concert series in Munich. Fascinating and intense performances of contemporary composers Milica Djordjević (*1984), Minas Borboudakis (*1974), Sofia Gubaidulina (*1931) and Charles Ives (*1874-1954). I was so happy to listen to a live performance of one of my favourite classical composers, Charles Ives – Central Park in the Dark. He focused on distant sounds, noises, and musical fragments you might hear during a night at Central Park. This was the initial piece, and as I was too excited and occupied to listen, I did not have time to sketch. Listening to Minas Borboudakis composition “sparks, waves and horizons” I sketched this spread almost automatically from wave to wave to spark to spark through the dark mysteries of an imaginary ocean. I drew the line sketch on the last image which resembles a head while listening to Milica Djordjević brief but so powerful piece ČVOR. 23. Thank you @moonbuildingmag for featuring ‘Reveries’ in issue 15b! 🧡🙏🏼 “Four years since first Dawn Chorus outing, ‘Liberamente’, and it’s very much been worth the wait. ‘Reveries’ is the handiwork of Zach Frizzell (aka zakè of Past Inside The Present, a label we seem to mention on an almost weekly basis… still loving that @marineeyes album from last week), Marc Ertel, and Damien Duque (aka City of Dawn). It takes their previous guitar drone-driven outing and evolves it. Which isn’t quite the right word, but hey, it’s Friday, gimme a break. The sound is awash with string-based arrangements which have a quality and a sophistication that make you feel at peace. IIn Guatemala geboren und heute in Mexico City lebend, diese Koordinaten scheinen Mabe Frattis Musik zwischen lateinamerikanischer zu nordamerikanischer Musikkultur zu verorten – was zunächst nicht so ungeheuer einzigartig klänge, wäre da nicht die Basis all ihres Schaffens: das Cello. Wo es in keiner der beiden genannten Sphären so wirklich beheimatet ist, wird jede Musik zum Experiment am Neuen. Dies meint auch das Cellospiel selbst. Just da, wo die Musik an den europäischen Barock erinnert, zupft sie mitunter die Saiten, als wäre das Cello eine Laute oder der Stand-Up-Bass des Jazz. Wenn die E-Gitarre in ihrer Band den Sound prägt, lässt Frattis Musik an den psychedelischen Rock der späten 60er denken oder an jene ihm entwachsenen, progressiven Spielformen, die sie mit lateinamerikanischen Harmonien bereichert. Erhält das Spiel der Band im Klang eines Free-Jazz-Saxofons eruptive Qualitäten, spielt ihr Cello dem Heavy Metal verwandte Sounds und wirkt darin für Momente vertraut, aber nur für Momente! Ach ja, all dies geschieht in bereits einem einzigen von Mabe Frattis Songs. Dabei genügt der Zusammenklang ihres klaren, leicht gehauchten oder in traditionellen Gesangstechniken erklingenden Soprans mit dem eigenen Cellospiel in seinen mannigfaltigen Techniken, um Zuhörer zu begeistern und Emotionen zu transportieren. Frattis Musik wirkt in sich völlig schlüssig, lässt man sich auf sie ein und sie verblüfft, geht man einen Schritt zurück und fragt: „Was macht sie denn da?“. Fasziniert bemerkt man dann, wie Fratti mit dem elektronisch modulierten Cello eigene Welten schafft. ‘out of the ash’ is out today on @histamine_tapes on cassette and digital. out of the ash is inspired by creation from out of adversity. Building something new from parts old, broken or abandoned. Contemplating a combination of personal, societal, environmental and creative concerns, out of the ash became a mosaic of new and remodelled existing sounds forged from such sources as synths and tabletop electric guitar. I filled four large woolpacks (also called fadges) full of autumn leaves from my lawn yesterday. Woolpacks are used to transport raw wool. Specially adapted forklifts use little whirling hooks to grab and lift the bales. After a few seasons, the wool packs are sold for a buck or two to keen gardeners for picking up weeds as well as the #$%@! autumn leaves. I reckon raking wrecks the struggling, shaded lawn. Instead, I put on some dirty gardening clothes and get on my hands and knees and rake up the majority by hand, pulling up the occasional daisy and thistle (thanks to the neighbour's flourishing thistle field) as I go. A quick wizz with my lawnmower can then suck up the ones I've missed.
