The first St Peter Port Sketchclub of 2024 is this Thursday 25th April in the market square. We have 20 locations lined up to take us through to September. All sessions will start at 5.45pm on Thursday evenings for 45-60 minutes followed by a drink and chat. See below a list of all the dates and locations for your diaries. Here is my new portrait of John Lennon. For this painting reference I used a still from the Beatles music video Help! I largely work from stills now for all of my paintings. I do have a full time job during the week and generally only have time to paint at weekends or when I am on annual leave. So I have to use my time wisely and I try and spend a couple of nights during the week trawling through archive film footage. Once I find a film that I think will be interesting to work from, I will then go through it frame by frame looking for a shot that I would like to use for a painting. This may sound quite boring but I actually find this part of the process quite exciting as there are endless possibilities! Once I have found a shot that I think will work I may try to manipulate it digitally to try and elevate the image in some way. I will be going through the same process of capturing a reference shot for Paul, George and Ringo. The story that comes as the biggest surprise to all is that of Professor Josephine Arendt - "The Queen of Melatonin". #bsw24 #science Her groundbreaking research has given us a better understanding of our body clocks, our night and day hormone - melatonin. Thanks to the Prof melatonin can be taken to alleviate the symptoms of jetlag and help reset shift worker's body clocks. The most effective treatment for the profoundly blind community is to take melatonin - bringing their body clocks back into alignment. The Prof also discovered the therapeutic use of blue light for SAD sufferers. Blue light can help to set our body clocks in parts of the world where there is no winter sun. One of the highlights of Jo's career, was spending time on the British Antarctic Base. There she could continue with her research into the effects of light on the human body, as well as that of melatonin, in the extreme conditions in which those working on the base could find themselves. Heartbeat House offers a place to stay for people who have loved ones who have undergone heart surgery in Southampton Hospital. The service includes a one off payment of £35 to stay as long as you like with the option to pay more if you like. When I was asked to help out I was only too pleased to get involved. When my son was born prematurely in 2007 we were lucky enough to stay in very similar accommodation to Heartbeat house across the road from Southampton Hospital. This place was affordable and became our safe haven in what was a very emotionally turbulent time. I know more than most how a place like Heartbeat House can provide locals with a comfortable and affordable base when they have loved ones receiving treatment in Southampton Hospital. I have something a little bit different to share today. At the end of last year, I was asked to create a bead embroidery for someone very special who was leaving the island. I was asked to include the favourite colours orange and yellow, and also the wording 'A La Perchoine'. For those of you outside Guernsey, 'A La Perchoine' is a very special Guernsey Patois word meaning 'until next time'. Apart from that, I had free reign on the design, so I decided to go with a sunset/sunrise over the sea to symbolise new chapters. So my pop up studio has popped back down. I’m quite pleased I managed to paint all my canvasses, but I didn’t do many watercolours and my gouache remained untouched. I’m really hoping these oil paintings are as dry as they feel as they’re all packed in a case 😬 Hope they’re not all stuck together on arrival back home. What have I learnt about painting out here in the heat? *There’s really only a two hour window in the mornings before it gets too hot. *If you leave oil paintings to dry outside they end up with a lot of garden dust embedded in them! *Acrylics just dry too fast, even with a slow drying medium. I found these two little pieces of unused sensitiser-coated paper. They were quite blue so it looked like the light had already got to them. I put them out in the sun anyway with some snippets on them and promptly forgot them. When I remembered them and washed them (after far too long) they came out like this… such beautiful clear sharp images. And yet, often when I try hard to get it right, and time the light, washing etc they end up in my reject pile. The cyanotype process is such a mystery to me. Ghost Ships. These images of passenger ships are taken from old photographs that once resided in Wyndhams Hotel. Years of daylight and damp have caused many to fade and mark with time. The images have been scanned and copied with the fading and foxing emphasised as much as the original prints. The copies have been worked into with graphite and chalk. They are hung with the least faded on one end progressing across to the barely visible. While the photos are an interesting piece of social history in themselves, the installation also asks the viewer to consider the nature of community, belonging, and the passing of time. How do we view and treat new members of our population? How much time is required for an individual to be considered local? Although it feels like Guernsey is generally a very welcoming place, casual xenophobia and racism exist. The irony is that even if many of us have three or more generations of local family roots, at some point all had family ancestors who were immigrants, making that familiar sea crossing to start a new phase of life. The work aims to show the history of the vessels that transported us across from England and France, long decommissioned, and the sense of time passing. It is a call to value the contribution, insight and diversity that new citizens bring to our community. It is also a commentary on the current UK Home Office policy regarding small boats arriving in the UK containing asylum seekers, and how government rhetoric has fed into negative discourses relating to migrants, which at best treat them as problems, and at worst ‘invasions’ or ‘armies’.
