Yesterday was the perfect day to hike the brand new Guttland Trail, Räschpetzer in Walferdange. The trail starts and ends at Walferdange station making it really accessible if you’re coming from the city and takes in all of the sights in this part of the forest: the Sonnebierg Nature Reserve (home to these wild orchids 😍), the old gypsum mines, and the Roman underground aqueducts. I’ve walked these forests lots of times since moving to Luxembourg and they’re some of our family’s favourites but this route took me off our usual path too, showing me a beautiful viewpoint over the valley. It’s not the easiest of walks - the first couple of kilometres are all uphill, and then of course there are a lot of steps coming down. But it is a beautiful one and there’s so much to enjoy in it. I love walking through the forests and imagining the Romans who once walked there. You can do this walk with children. We’ve done it before and we usually save the uphill bit until last (never easy 😅) but this route certainly makes more sense. Probably best enjoyed with older children or more experienced walkers. Two firsts today: a first hike around the Bildchen Guttland Trail and a first try at rucking. What’s rucking? Good question! I first heard about it on the @1000hoursoutside podcast. It’s super simple: take a walk and wear a rucksack with weights. I’m very keen on strength training at the moment (must look after my bones! 🦴) so the appeal of “stacking”, as explained in the podcast, strength exercise with the walking I normally do was really appealing to me. So today I pushed 9kg of weights into a rucksack and set off! (It’s recommended that you start with 5-10kg and build up.) Damn it was heavy 😂 But actually this was a great hike to try rucking with. There were some incredibly steep stretches, especially at the start, but the 6km hike zoomed by with awesome rock structures, a little stream and some beautiful views to enjoy. I really loved the walk and will definitely do it again. Not with my kids, yet, I think, but it’s a lovely hike to enjoy alone or with friends who won’t complain about the hills. And will I ruck again? Honestly my legs were pretty wobbly after the 2 hour hike. Which I’ve decided probably means it worked! So yes. I did the new Guttland Trail Bildchen (6,3km) in Rollingen ☺️. Small paths lead you through a beautifil forest, past beautiful rock formations „Kauschelterlayen“ and a small stream. Then you reach a beautiful area called „Dräiburen“ : the water from 3 sources come out of the rocks to form a small pond. There is a also a nice picnic area next to it. The next highlight is the „Bildchen“ of Rollingen, a pietà in the rocks. Every year, on the second sunday of september, there is a procession to the Pietà. Teil 9: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: Da ich den Weg andersherum gegangen bin, ging es von den faszinierenden Mamerleeën Höhlen direkt zum Ausgangspunkt zurück, dem Unabhängigkeits Obelisk am Krounebierg. Unterwegs führte der Pfad noch an weiteren interessanten Sandssteinfelsen vorbei. In einem soll sich noch eine ehemalige Wohnhöhle befinden, die ich aber nicht besichtigt habe. 🇬🇧 Part 9: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: As I walked the trail the other way round, I went from the fascinating Mamerleeën Caves directly back to the starting point, the Independence Obelisk at the Krounebierg. On the way, the path passed other interesting sandstone rocks. Keine 10 Meter vom Höhleneingang entfernt stützt seitlich eine erste Monolithsäule die Höhlendecke ab. Da sich dahinter eine Versatzmauer befindet und kurz zuvor teilweise die Höhle eingebrochen ist, ist anzunehmen, daß der Höhlenraum hier genauso breit war, wie im Rest der folgenden Höhlenkammer. Die Hauptkammer beeindruckt durch ihre Stützpfeiler, welche die Höhlendecke tragen. An der Decke erkennt man noch die Arbeitsspuren der Steinbrecher. ⚒ 🇬🇧 Part 7: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: The most impressive of the Mamerleeën caves is the so-called "Salles Gregoire" cave. Less than 10 metres from the cave entrance, a first monolithic column supports the cave ceiling at the side. Since there is a backfill wall behind it and shortly before that the cave partially collapsed, it can be assumed that the cave space here was as wide as in the rest of the following cave chamber. The main chamber impresses with its supporting pillars, which carry the cave ceiling. Die Decke des ersten Höhlenraums wird durch 10 Monolithsäulen abgestützt die fast bis zur Decke reichen, der Zwischenraum zur Decke wird durch aufgesetzte kleinere Steine ausgefüllt. Die Säulen erinnern an einen gotischen Kirchenraum, daher der Name der Höhle. Sie liegt etwas abseits vom Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën. Teil 5: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: Die Millesteng Höhle, eine der Mamerleeën Höhlen am Wanderweg Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën bei Mersch in Luxemburg. Hier erkennt man deutlich, dass die Höhlen teilweise durch Menschenhand entstanden. Niedrige, aber breite Gänge wurden früher Zeit in den Sandstein geschlagen, um Werksteine oder Mühlsteine zu gewinnen. Here you can clearly see that the caves was partly formed by human hand. Low but wide passages were cut into the sandstone in the past in order to extract millstones or construction stones. Teil 3: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: Mit der Huellee Höhle beginnen die sogenannten Mamerleeën Höhlen. Über 10 natürliche oder von Menschenhand in den Sandstein geschlagenen Höhlen. Sie ziehen sich von hier ca 1 km entlang des Plateaus. Auf den ersten 4 Bildern noch Eindrücke von der Huellee, auf den Bildern 5 u. 6 ist die Palslee oder Kichen Höhle zu sehen, eine kleine Steinkammer, auf den letzten Bildern die Bitzmaschin Höhle, die vier Eingänge hat. Hier erkennt man, dass diese Höhle künstlich erweitert wurde, um bestimmte Sandsteinschichten für Mühlsteine oder ähnliches zu gewinnen. ⚒ 🇬🇧 Part 3: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: The so-called Mamerleeën Caves begin with Huellee Cave. More than 10 natural or man-made caves have been cut into the sandstone. They stretch from here about 1 km along the plateau. On the first 4 pictures you can see impressions of the Huellee, on pictures 5 and 6 you can see the Palslee or Kichen Cave, a small stone chamber, on the last pictures you can see the Bitzmaschin Cave, which has four entrances. Teil 2: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: An bizarren Sandsteinablagerungen geht es weiter zum Aussichtspunkt "Priedegtstull", von dem man in die umliegenden Täler und die Burg Hollenfels blickt. Auf dem Plateau geht es über schattige Wege weiter zur "Huellee" Höhle. Kurz zuvor sehen wir den Bergfried von Burg Schönfels (Belleroche, Schlass Schëndels) unter uns im Tal. Die Huellee ist eine natürliche Höhle. Hinter dem großen Hauptraum mit zwei Eingängen führt sie rechts als tiefe Klüfthöhle weiter in den Fels hinein. 🇬🇧 Part 2: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: Along bizarre sandstone deposits, the trail continues to the "Priedegtstull" viewpoint, from which you can see into the surrounding valleys and Hollenfels Castle. On the plateau, we continue along shady paths to the "Huellee" cave. Shortly before, we see the keep of Schoenfels Castle (Belleroche, Schlass Schëndels) below us in the valley. The Huellee is a natural cave. Teil 1: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: Letzten Sonntag war ich in Luxemburg auf dem 7, 6 km langen Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën bei Mersch unterwegs. Ein abwechslungsreicher und interessanter Wanderweg, der an faszinierenden Sandsteinformationen und Höhlen entlang führt. Seinen Namen hat er von den Mamerleeën oder auch Mamerlayen Höhlen bei Schönfels. Dazu mehr in den folgenden Teilen. Besonders bei warmen und heißem Wetter sind der schattige Weg und die kühlen Höhlen angenehm zu gehen. Ausgangspunkt ist der Unabhängigkeits Obelisk am Krounebierg bei Mersch-Reckange. Ich bin aus Versehen den Weg "verkehrt" herum gegangen und zuerst über die "Woleffsgriecht" - Schlucht und die "Hunnebuer" Quelle zum "Priedegtstull" Felsen gelaufen. 🇬🇧 Part 1: Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën: Last Sunday I was in Luxembourg walking the 7, 6 km Guttland.Trail Mamerleeën near Mersch. A varied and interesting hiking trail that leads along fascinating sandstone formations and caves. It takes its name from the Mamerleeën or Mamerlayen caves. More about this in the following parts. The starting point is the Independence Obelisk at the Krounbierg near Mersch-Reckange. A pretty Sunday afternoon hike along the @visitguttland Guttland Trail starting and ending at Reimberg. It’s a pretty woodland walk with lots of streams and wooden bridges, ending with a stroll through open countryside and rolling fields. Well signed and beautifully maintained making it a really enjoyable Sunday stroll 💚 Hiking solo helped 😂 I really enjoy sneaking off when the boys are enjoying doing their own thing at home.
