Throwback Thursday Thought: Back in 2001, when I was just a young gal working for the Newport tour over the summer, I was walking along Thames Street on my way to work, sporting my beautiful ghosty dress. A middle aged man and woman in a BMW convertible pulled up beside me. I assumed they needed directions so I approached, helpful darling I was (and am, tbh). Instead of directions, he said "What day is it?". I was surprised, but rattled off the date, to which he roared "Yeah, it's not (effing) Halloween ! Get a life, you freak!" and sped off. Twenty-three years have passed. I'm sure he doesn't remember that interaction, but every time I get into my ghost garb, every time a beautiful Providence person shouts a sweet compliment my way regarding my outfit, I think of that dude. On a snowy Christmas Eve in 1780, Providence townspeople were celebrating. Celebrations offered a reprieve from the agony of war which hung over the embattled soon-to-be nation. In Market Square, revellers crowded around the local tavern when a joyful idea was born. They would take the spirits of the injured and ill French soldiers up the hill, lying in beds at University Hall. The crowd assembled, lanterns lit, and caroused up the hill, following slippery paths until they reached their destination. The building lay quiet and somber against the falling snow. The silence was split by the voices that lifted to sing holiday songs, some in English and some in French. October was ...whew. It is my favorite month, my most challenging month, a month of losses of loved ones over the years, a month that gives me so much joy, a month that pushes me. It is the month that reminds me to take the little moments, to bow in awe of my amazing guides, to get lost in magic of the spirits we celebrate. It reminds me again and again of why I love this city from the marrow of my bones outward, why I feel so protective of these tales, and why it is important to get it right. There were rainy tours, hot tours, painful tours (smiled and cackled through an evening whilst a corset stay pierced my side...did the group know? I hope not; also did a tour during which my sock slid into the depths of my shoe and was half on, half off...the horror!), daytime tours, and weird tours. I was better some days than others, more organized and efficient some days than others, more energized some days than others...but that is October. My most humanizing month.
