This weekend we had the Dutch taxidermy championships! I had three entrees, and scored the highest in all mammals with this little yawning dwarf mongoose relaxing on top of an ant hill. SWITSONGO The Dwarf Mongoose: A Curious Observer in the Twilight Wilderness. Switsongo means “little” in Tsonga. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the African savannah, we decided to make our way slowly back to camp. Along our path, we came across a colony of dwarf mongooses. Nestled within a disused termite hill, these creatures had established their home, and our presence stirred the curiosity of one particularly bold individual. Like many of its kind, this mongoose displayed a fearless demeanour. Its small frame, filled with curiosity and a hint of courage, did not shy away from our presence. With a brief, unwavering gaze, it observed us intently, as if deciphering the nature of our intrusion. The mongoose, while miniature in stature, seemed undeterred by the size disparity, maintaining a vigilant watch over our every move. We found ourselves torn between the captivating encounter and the necessity to return to our camp. The last remnants of sunlight cast a warm glow on the terrain, urging us to press forward. As we moved close past the mound, the fearless dwarf mongoose continued to observe, its tiny head turning with an almost fascinated interest in our movements. The unique behaviour of this individual dwarf mongoose became even more apparent as it suddenly bounced across the expansive termite mound, seeking different vantage points to observe us passing through. Its actions hinted at a level of intelligence and adaptability, traits that have allowed these creatures to thrive in the challenging African landscape. Our departure moments later from the vicinity of its home marked the end of this unexpected encounter. But as I turned to take one last look, I could see the mongoose's tiny silhouette lingered against the darkening landscape. Again I was the only one who spotted the Common Dwarf Mongoose at our camp and what a darling it was! They are the smallest African carnivores and can be found from east to southern Central Africa. (Animalia, 2024). Also known to be sociable with extended families. “Common dwarf mongooses begin and end each day sunbathing and socializing with the members of their groups. The rest of the day these animals spend looking for food among brush and rocks.” Another fun fact: “Common dwarf mongooses and hornbills prefer to forage together and warn each other of nearby raptors and other predators. Hornbills usually gather at termite mounds, the favorite sleeping places of mongooses, and wait for them to come out. Hornbills sometimes even provide them with wake-up calls. TEAMWORK . True to its name the Dwarf Mongoose is the smallest mongoose on Earth, but perhaps more interesting is that it is also Africa’s smallest carnivore, measuring just 7-10 inches. They are found from Somalia and Ethiopia to eastern South Africa and Namibia and live in groups of up to 20 individuals. They use abandoned termite mounds as den sites, sources of food and look-out posts. . Possibly the most interesting curiosity of these magnificent creatures is that they form mutual relationships with other animals to reduce their risk to predation. As an example, they will forage together with hornbills. The hornbills will warn the mongoose of approaching danger, and in turn, the hornbills catch the flying insects that are disturbed by the mongoose. Like many other species in this group of animals, they have also shown adaptions to their nervous systems that make them somewhat immune to neurotoxic venomous snakes. . I see these often in The Kruger Park but every sighting remains an exciting and special one. Kleine Räuber: Südliche Zwergmanguste @zoo.leipzig Die Südliche Zwergmanguste ist eine von zwei Zwergmangustenarten. Sie bewohnen unterschiedliche Habitate in Ost- und Südafrika. So kommen sie in Savannen, verschiedenen Wäldern und Buschland vor. Die kleinen Räuber werden etwa 23 cm lang, haben eine Schwanzlänge von maximal 19 cm und wiegen bis zu 420g. Zwergmangusten leben in Gruppen mit fester Hierarchie zusammen. Weibchen sind stets ranghöher als Männchen. Angeführt wird die Gruppe von einem erfahrenen Weibchen, welche die Wanderrouten bestimmt und Vorrang bei der Nahrungsaufnahme hat. Nur sie und ihr Partner pflanzen sich fort. Durch Hormone wird die Fortpflanzung der anderen Tiere unterdrückt. Sollte doch ein rangniedrigeres Weibchen Jungtiere bekommen, werden diese meist getötet Zwergmangusten ernähren sich von Insekten und kleinen Wirbeltieren. Der Bestand ist aktuell noch nicht gefährdet. Driving past a termite mound by the side of the road, I noticed a couple of heads sticking out of one of the entrance holes. Reversing back, I found they belonged to a couple of Dwarf Mongooses which were soon joined by several more, curious to see what was going on. As I watched something caught their attention up in the sky - no doubt some kind of raptor. Bij dierentuin Animal Farm zijn we dagelijks bezig met verrijking. Verrijking is een term die we gebruiken voor alles waarmee we het natuurlijke gedrag van dieren stimuleren en uitdagen. Simpeler gezegd, we zoeken naar manieren om de dieren lekker bezig te houden. Onze verrijkingsspecialist Pamela Rood is al lange tijd bezig met het onderzoeken van verschillende loopwielen. Een loopwiel is natuurlijk een prachtige vorm van verrijking, maar wist je dat ze heel vaak helemaal niet zo gezond zijn voor de dieren? Het bewegen is voor de dieren natuurlijk top, maar loopwielen zijn heel vaak veel te klein voor het dier. Als een wiel namelijk te klein is gaat een dier met een holle rug rennen en dit is heel slecht voor de heupen en rug van het dier, wat op latere leeftijd grote klachten geeft. Dieren laten pijn niet snel zien, maar betekend niet dat ze er geen last van hebben. Grote loopwielen is dus het advies. Voor mangoesten zijn deze moeilijk te vinden, dus is Pamela er zelf eentje gaan ontwikkelen met twee fietsvelgen als basis. Een heel project, maar het resultaat is prachtig. Curiosity killed a cat, but not my new furry pal - a Common dwarf mongoose (Helogale parvula). It is the smallest of the mongooses (not mongeese!) and Africa's smallest carnivore. Squirrel-sized but with extremely sharp teeth, it is short and stocky, with a blunt, pointed muzzle and long tail - with a speckled-brown or reddish color. It preys primarily on insects and also eat rodents, lizards, snakes, eggs and birds. Unlike the solitary Slender mongoose (Galerella sanguinea) aka Black-tailed mongoose, the Dwarf mongoose live in groups of 12 to 15; the other social ones are the Banded mongoose (Mungos mungo). Dwarf mongoose groups are matriarchal (led by a dominant alpha female) along with her alpha male. Dwarf mongooses and ground hornbills have a symbiotic relationship often feeding together. The collective noun for mongoose is a business (or committee, delegation or troop). If you have an interest in birds or even take photos of them, you probably know about the nictitating membrane or "third eyelid" that they can draw across the eye for protection. I mean those pictures you probably like to delete from a series, where the bird has this silvery, zombie-like eye.
