Write, or your programs will be dead on arrival. If you are not writing, hire someone who does immediately. There are 1.8 million registered nonprofits in the United States and very few funders. So you can understand how competitive and challenging our industry is, 74% of us (public charities) are trying to get grant funding from only 7% of private and community foundations, which are the grantmakers. AI is not going to help you. Classes are a good start, but daily writing is your best bet. Practice makes Perfect. Good luck. It's go time! Hey all - exciting update! Check out this fancy new website. LiberatedPractitioner.com For a couple of years I’ve been working with fellow health practitioners and first responders to help them to ease pain, build resilience, recover from burnout, and discover purpose. The seeds were planted 5-6 years ago when I was on the brink of exhaustion. My burnout was a result of years of over-giving, suppressing emotions and being out of alignment - which all came crashing down after a particularly traumatic incident I was involved in as a paramedic. What came next was the roughest of my life. But now I see it as a huge blessing. It cleared the weeds, giving me time to reflect, heal and come back to my soul. For years in my Kinesiology practice, I’ve been helping people overcome chronic pain. This experience taught me that our pain is very often a result of unprocessed emotions, stress and trauma stored in the body. So I learned to help people move that stuck energy using my background in Tai Chi, Qigong and coaching. It was my own experience with pain, anxiety and burnout that led me to realize that we practitioners are who often need that medicine the most! (I certainly did 😅) The seeds started sprouting. 📌Wellbeing at Work📌 @thelodgehotelcoleraine provided the perfect space for todays team building workshop with social workers from the @northernhsct It’s so important to press pause and step away from the work environment to reset and recharge the body, whilst refocusing the mind. Todays session began with tracking our nervous system to notice what was happening on the inside. I encourage everyone to do this practice throughout the day, noticing what activates your system and what provides support. After a short presentation, we began engaging in a variety of up-regulating and down-regulating exercises. We explored movement, tapping, breathing, supportive touch, laughter exercises, and embodied relaxation. I must clearly still be on a vacation hangover because I forgot to mention some huge, breaking news in the Nonprofit World. There have been noteworthy improvements in the newly updated OMB Uniform Guidance, including the de minimis indirect cost rate that all levels of governments using federal funds must pay to every grantee increase to 15% (up from 10%) unless the organization has a higher federally negotiated indirect cost rate, Notices of Funding Opportunities (requests for proposals) will be streamlined and simplified, the Single Audit threshold will increase to $1 million, and more. The reforms also promote equity by removing barriers and ensuring greater outreach to communities that traditionally have limited access to grant programs. If you know me, you know I am very protective but passionate about my industry. People have no idea how nonprofits, grants, or fundraising works. @candiddotorg had a great post that showed the 501(c) breakdown and the fact that there are 1.8 million registered nonprofits. So, people can understand how competitive and challenging our industry is, 74% of us are trying to get grant funding from only 7% of Private Foundations. This is why people do not understand what we do or how we do it. This is the perfect example of why so many small nonprofits go under. You can put a fork in your organization; you are done if you do not have relationships and cannot write grants. All small nonprofit executives hire a skilled grants professional (grant writer is a bad word in the business) right away, a fundraising specialist, and if you do not have the budget, take some classes immediately. Sometimes, dreams really do come true. I adore animals, always have and always will. But as a child, my allergies were so severe that I couldn’t have pets. I would get ill if I went to a friend’s house and they had dogs or cats. In fact, I remember going to stay over with a friend in my early teens and ended up in the hospital after a severe reaction. But a few years ago, I noticed my allergies started to lessen. I could visit my friend’s house and not get asthma or be covered with hives. Fast forward to seven years ago when Kim entered my life. Yes, I was able to get my very own dog, and it was literally a dream come true. She’s the perfect dog for me, and she’s changed my life. What can I say? I adore the bones of her. And god knows how lockdown would have been without her. Kim is actually an integral part of my marketing process: Once or twice a week, I pop her into the car, take her for a walk somewhere nice and then find a dog-friendly cafe for coffee or lunch. I take a notebook and do some writing – planning a blog, social media, or events for the Grow Your Private Practice membership. For me, it’s a way to get out of the house, enjoy a walk in the fresh air, and have something nice to eat while doing some work. It’s got to be one of the biggest benefits of working for yourself.
