3/26/2023 El Malpais National Monument- La Ventana Arch, Sandstone Cliffs and touching a dinosaur 🦕 🦖bone! 2.6 miles, 170 eg. Not all hikes have to be long or difficult to be epic. Seeing this natural sandstone arch that is 125 ft high and 165 ft wide and playing on the ancient sand dunes that now make up the sandstone cliffs would have been spectacular enough. But I’m fortunate to have @kentonics Ken Lazara as a friend. He’s a field geologist and took me to see and touch a dinosaur bone he located in a gravel filled formation. So I spent a reverent moment laying hands on a bit of history. 3 day/2 night backpacking trip to LaBarge to enjoy the roaring water in the canyon under the almost full moon . Via First Water/Second Water/Boulder Canyon. 12 miles, 1600 ft elevation gain. Nina and I the first night, then joined by Meeka and Carrick. Of course it was challenging- crossing the raging creek safely on Friday, finding the routes via carin, carrying the pack, finding dry wood, scaling boulders and keeping warm. But more often, it was spiritual.
