Home Release Review: “BLUE GIANT.” Adaptations are growing in number more and more these days in entertainment. If there’s not a cinematic version of a book, show, or comic, there’s a television one. Often times, these tales involve beings of incredible strength or speed, of awesome might, and inconceivable battles. Initially released for two-nights in October 2023, Yuzuru Tachikawa’s (“Mob Psycho 100”) “BLUE GIANT” is the one adaptation that doesn’t fit into the expectation. Inspired by author Shin’ichi Ishizuka’s graphic novel, “BLUE GIANT” is the story of one young man’s desire to become the greatest jazz musician in the world, telling the story of his origin and the two friends who were with him for an important 18-month period. The tale, like the lead, is unassuming and the use of jazz won’t entice a large section of movie-watchers, but like the audiences that come to see the trio perform, anyone who watches is sure to be blown away. Now, via GKIDS Films and Shout! Studios, a Blu-ray and digital edition is coming available so audiences who feel the flow and excitement can do so anytime they like. Review: “Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths - Part Two.” Event storylines in comics are not unusual. It’s a way to take on something that doesn’t quite fit in the everyday narratives, while also providing a means of both bringing characters together and altering their trajectory. In the world of DC Comics, one of the biggest is the 1985-1986 storyline, “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” created by writer Marv Wolfman and penciled by George Pérez, which brought together versions of heroes from across the various multiverses in an attempt to save as many of their worlds as possible. In January 2024, Warner Bros. Animation kicked off their own version of “Crisis with Part One,” a story that not only brings together heroes from all the edges of WB Animation history, but ties together the prior seven films, dubbed a part of the TomorrowVerse (after 2020’s “Superman: Man of Tomorrow”), revealing that these films have secretly been building up to this very story. Now, with “Part Two” available on home video, even more ties are revealed as the danger grows ever more perilous. Review: “Downtown Owl” from EoM Contributor Michelle Swope. Long ago, in a time before the internet and social media, there was a world that Gen X remembers well — the ‘80s had Reagan, the AIDS epidemic, big shoulder pads, bigger hair, bold makeup, and colorful, poppy music videos with the birth of MTV. Some even say that this decade was the most iconic time for pop culture and cinema. Dark comedy “Downtown Owl” expertly encapsulates the marvelous, and sometimes eccentric, vibe of the mid-1980s, and delightfully highlights popular trends like hair, makeup, fashion, and entertainment. Home Release Review: “The Beekeeper.” When one thinks of the filmography of actor Jason Statham, films typically feature him in one of two roles: quiet badass or loudmouth badass. He’s certainly done more with turns in “Snatch” (2000) and “London” (2005) demonstrating his versatility, but it’s when he plays an ass-kicker that audiences show up and consume popcorn in mass quantities as he destroys whole forces of opponents with grace, wit, and relative ease. Statham’s latest comes in the form of mystery action “The Beekeeper,” directed by David Ayer (“Suicide Squad;” “Fury”) and written by Kurt Wimmer (“Equilibrium;” “Salt”), wherein the actor portrays a retired quiet badass, formerly part of a clandestine group known as “Beekeepers,” who seeks to right a terrible wrong that’s part of a larger systemic issue left unchecked. Originally released by MGM Studios, “The Beekeeper” comes to rest on shelves via Warner Bros. Pictures Home Entertainment, unfortunately bringing with it not a single bonus feature to explore the mythos created in this adventure. Available on VOD and digital January 30th, 2024. Eureka Entertainment Restoration Review: “Black Mask.” Despite living in an age where thousands of films are available at the touch of a button, there’re still far too many films that are either difficult-bordering-on-impossible to stream, thereby making physical media the best way to access what you want, when you want. This includes out of print films like “Dogma” (1999) or “Titus” (1999) or films with multiple cuts like the Daniel Lee-directed (“What Price Survival”), Jet Li (“Romeo Must Die;” “Cradle 2 the Grave;” “Hero”) and Lau Ching-wan (“Running Out of Time” series)-starring 1996 comic adaptation Black Mask. Thanks to premier United Kingdom boutique distributor Eureka Entertainment making its U.S. debut via MVD Entertainment Group, action cinema fans have the opportunity to explore Li’s “Black Mask” like never before, but is it worth it for folks without this film in their cinemalogue already? Home Release Review: “Night Swim” from EoM Contributor Justin Waldman. When movies come out in January, there is an inherent idea about the quality of the movie, unless it’s a late release of an Oscar title. These are sometimes unfair assumptions, especially when it comes to horror movies — horror movies specifically because January is usually not filled with the genre and can at least take advantage of the fans hungry for something new. When you have executive producers Jason Blum (“Get Out”) and James Wan (“Malignant”), too, there is inherently a fair amount of hope, and stacking it with a well-known cast, the expectations for it to be at least *good* are there, and even if the movie isn’t good, it’ll at least be entertaining. Unfortunately, Bryce McGuire (“Unfollowed”), who’s making his feature directorial debut with “Night Swim,” swings for the fences and continuously fouls out. Home Release Review: “Lisa Frankenstein.” 1980s American cinema included some of the most influential teen comedies in cinema. So much so that filmmakers continue to take inspiration from them. The thing is that, while significant for their time, the majority of these films focused on the male perspective and, truthfully, contain aspects that don’t age particularly well in the context of the modern era. Now, after directing two short films, Zelda Williams (“Kappa Kappa Die;” “Shrimp”) helms the horror comedy “Lisa Frankenstein,” written and produced by Diablo Cody (the mind behind such films as “Jennifer’s Body” (2009) and “Tully” (2018)). It’s a story that puts its female lead first and offers a dark comedy that speaks to audiences of today and yesteryear. Originally released by Focus Features, “Lisa Frankenstein” fans (or those who are just curious) are offered a home release from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment that includes roughly 19 minutes of special features to expand the viewing experience. Available on digital March 29th, 2024. Available on Blu-ray and DVD April 9th, 2024. Click the bio link to read the complete home release review. Home Release Review: “Monster” from EoM Contributor Andrew Eisenman. “Monster” (2023) was one of the best films of last year that no one saw, as is typical of Hirokazu Kore-eda’s (“Shoplifters”; “Nobody Knows”) films as of late. It’s also part of a worrying trend and aftershock of American politics in world cinema — the unnecessary questioning of the teacher’s role in society. In “Monster,” Kore-eda uses this story vehicle to affirm the teacher’s place in society, but, if like most American cinephiles this fall, you only saw the trailer for the film, you’d think teachers were a threat. It’s a great film built for the wrong moment, now out on Blu-ray in the U.S. Available on VOD February 27th, 2024. Available on digital March 12th, 2024. Available on Blu-ray April 9th, 2024. Home Release Review: “The Roundup: No Way Out.” 2023 provided a proper glut of delicious action flicks. In addition to the obvious theatrical blockbusters like “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” and “Teenage Mutant Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” we also got “Sisu,” “Extraction 2,” “The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan,” and the third entry into the “Crime City” series, “The Roundup: No Way Out (범죄도시 3)”, led by actor Ma Dong-seok (also known as Don Lee). Helmed by “The Roundup” (2022) director Lee Sang-yong and written by Ma (“The Roundup”), Lee (“The Roundup”), Kim Min-sung (“The Roundup”), and Cha Woo-jin, “No Way Out” shifts gears by switching up the location and enemy type that series hero Detective Ma Seok-do (Ma) goes up against, resulting in a film that is less mystery/thriller than the previous two, leaning more into the action and physical comedy. The result is an action-packed rollercoaster that’s as much fun the first time as all the times after. Now, thanks to Capelight Pictures and MPI Home Video, ahead of the fourth entry, “Punishment (Beom-Joe-do-si 4)”, releasing on April 24th in Korea, U.S. audiences can put their hands on “No Way Out” without fear of a big hit coming their way from Detective Ma — just be wary of the edition you snag. Home Release Review: “Baby Assassins 2.” The slacker comedy comes in many shapes and varieties. You’ve got rom-com “Mallrats” (1995), straight comedy “Friday” (1995), dramedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (1986), and comedic thriller “The Big Lebowski” (1998). Each one uses the slackers at their center to tell stories of love, adventure, excitement, and, in some cases, survival. Putting his own twist on the subgenre is Yûgo Sakamoto with his “Baby Assassins” series starring Saori Izawa (“RE:BORN”) and Akari Takaishi (“My Happy Marriage”) as two young ladies working within a Japanese-based assassins guild who prefer to be stuffing their faces with food and laying on the couch when not completing contracts. The first film premiered in 2021 and the second, “Baby Assassins 2” (previously titled as “Baby Assassins: 2 Babies”), released in 2023 and now comes to physical formats in April in the U.S. before joining action streamer Hi-YAH! in July. The U.S. edition of the home release contains not a single piece of making-of information, but fans of this particular action comedy series will delight in being able to reenter this world of ridiculousness whenever they like. Home Release Review: “Born To Fly.” April 2023, director/co-writer Liu Xiaoshi’s “Born To Fly” soared into U.S. theaters, bringing with it an energy from China that American audiences recognized from the “Top Gun” series: big attitudes, fast planes, and a desire to be the best there is. Unlike “Top Gun,” however, the focus is placed on the test pilots, the innovators who develop the technology to defend the skies from invasion and gamble with their lives every time they get in the cockpit to ensure that any loss of life by any pilot is as minimized as possible. Scripted by Liu and Guan Gui (“Silence of Smoke”), “Born To Fly” explores a different perspective in military aviation, making for a fresh take on the fighter pilot action drama. Unfortunately, the film as a whole suffers at it follows a predictable path from its thrilling introduction to emotional end. Available on Blu-ray and DVD March 26th, 2024. Radiance Films Home Review: “The Bounty Hunter Trilogy” from EoM Contributor Blak Cinephile. The lone wolf archetype is a figure that has lived on in many samurai and action spectacles — the man who walks alone and walks a fine line of morals and principles, fighting for the common good, and the common coin. In walks Tomisaburô Wakayama and his performance of Shikoro Ichibel, the doctor/spy-for-hire (yeah, those opposing professions threw me off, too) who moves from one daring violent mission to another in Radiance’s newest release of three violent spectacles. Director Shigehiro Ozawa’s “Killer’s Mission” (1969), Eiichi Kudo’s “The Fort of Death” (1969), and Ozawa’s “Eight Men to Kill” (1972), – together these films form “The Bounty Hunter Trilogy.” These “James Bond” and spaghetti Western-inspired films are a great precursor to the highly influential “Lone Wolf and Cub” films which would make Wakayama a household name for all samurai cinema fans. 88 Films Restoration Review: “The Inspector Wears Skirts II.” In December 2023, 88 Films released a 2K restoration of director Wellson Chin Sing-Wai’s 1988 female-led action comedy “The Inspector Wears Skirts,” produced by Jackie Chan (“Gorgeous”) with stunt production by Jackie Chan’s stunt team. For U.S. audiences, the film starring Sibelle Hu (“Twinkle, Twinkle, Lucky Stars”) and Cynthia Rothrock (“Yes, Madam!”) would be released as “Top Squad,” advertised as a Hong Kong version of “Police Academy” (1984). Much like that action comedy series that spawned multiple sequels, entries two thru four of the “Inspector” series is set to be released by 88 Films in 2024, beginning with “Inspector 2” (1989), which sees Hu return as Instructor Wu as she tries to whip her cadets into a shape that can take on the men’s division. Though it lacks the booklet which accompanies the first entry’s restoration, fans of “The Inspector Wears Skirts 2” can enjoy several on-disc features, as well as the typical reversible poster, and cover art — plus a visually remarkable restoration. Arrow Video Review: “Dark Water” from EoM Contributor Justin Waldman. Sometimes there are movies that just entirely escape your radar. Then you realize a boutique label is giving the film the treatment it arguably deserves and you decide to take the plunge and watch it for the first time. Before I decide to give any thoughts on anything, if you’ve seen “Dark Water,” then you know what you’re getting yourself into. But if you haven’t and enjoy true crime docu-series, then this will feel eerily familiar to something you’ve seen. Now, here is where it gets creepy, a little too creepy if you ask me. The movie was released in 2002 and the true story I’m referring to happened in 2013, and it’s not just a typical story either. However, if you’re new to this Japanese horror (J-horror) and you’re unaware of what was previously alluded to, all you need to know is that the short story this is based on draws from author Koj Suzuki and directed by Hideo Nakata, two creatives who previously worked together to adapt Suzuki’s work into 1998’s “The Ring (Ringu).” So prepare yourself for the Arrow Video treatment on the J-horror, “Dark Water.” Available on 4K UHD and Blu-ray March 19th, 2024. Home Release Review: “Eileen” from EoM Contributor Gabe Lapalombella. Certain films slipped through the cracks in the heat of the 2023 awards season. Everything released at that time was not going for the gold. Those smaller films attempt to achieve other successes. Outside of the awards season rush, some films simply want to be fun and exciting genre exercises. The 2023 psychological thriller “Eileen” wants to give viewers a twisty and divertingly fun time. The results get delivered in spades and offer moments of pure entertainment. This starts in the film’s basic premise, providing a Hitchcockian-like story. Available on digital January 2nd, 2024. Home Release Review: “Poor Things” from EoM Contributor Mallory Moore. It may seem strange to describe any part of “Poor Things” as conventional. This bold and highly imaginative fantasy is the eighth feature film directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, a 21st-century auteur who has made a name for himself with his dark humor and his ability to make macabre and grotesque stories look beautiful. Lanthimos doesn’t deviate from his signature style in “Poor Things,” a four-time Oscar-winner that boasts an absolutely wacky production design and (at times) very upsetting subject matter. But the underlying structure that supports all the unconventional elements (and the thing that makes “Poor Things” so gloriously hopeful) is a surprisingly conventional plot map with a tried-and-true storybook hero who has been all dolled up in Lanthimos fashion. Despite all odds, the hero, Bella Baxter (Emma Stone), transforms, triumphs, and lives out her hero’s destiny in a remarkable way. “Poor Things” is undeniably unique, and it works because it is also undeniably familiar. Available on digital February 27th, 2024. Available on Disney+ and Hulu March 7th, 2024. Available on Blu-ray and DVD March 12th, 2024. Click the bio link to read the complete home release review. Home Release Review: “One-Percent Warrior.” In the world of cinema, there are action stars and there are martial arts. Arnold Schwarzenegger (“True Lies”), Sylvester Stallone (“Tango & Cash”), and Dwayne Johnson (“The Rundown”) — these are action stars. Michael Jai White (“Black Dynamite”), Donnie Yen (“Hero”), and Sammo Hung (“Wheels on Meals”) — these are martial artists. A martial artist can become an action star, but, typically, it doesn’t go the other way, though it can happen and Keanu Reeves (started studying karate in the ‘80s) is a great example. From the perspective of audiences, there may be little difference between the two as great choreography, knowledgeable direction, and proper editing can effectively create the illusion necessary to sell the performer. This conversation is a key component of the meta-crime actioner “One-Percent Warrior” (originally released as “1%er”) from writer/director Yūdai Yamaguchi (“Rokuroku: The Promise of the Witch”), led by Tak Sakaguchi (“Re:Born;” “Prisoners of the Ghostland”) and featuring Jeet Kune Do practitioner Ishii Togo. Yūdai, via Tak, explores the complex nature of filmmaking and the struggle to be authentic and wraps it within a martial arts action package. Available on Blu-ray and digital March 12th, 2024. Home Release Review: “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” From 2013 – 2023, Warner Bros. Pictures has released 15 films featuring characters from DC Comics beginning with The Trinity — Superman (Henry Cavill), Batman (Ben Affleck), and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) — and now it’s all over with the James Wan-directed (“Saw;” “Malignant”) “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” This final film does nothing to shore up or finalize any of the threads from the prior films, but stands alone as a proper sequel to Wan’s 2018 “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa (“Fast X”) as Arthur Curry. It would be unfair to “Lost Kingdom” to put any of the weight that the end of the cinematic era possesses onto the film, so, instead, it’s better to consider it as it sees itself, a story apart from the others, focused entirely on giving audiences a Lovecraftian-tinged family adventure, just like the first. Delightfully, both Wan and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (“Orphan”) return to write the script with Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett (“The Last Manhunt”), creating an adventure that leans into what makes comic book stories so great — endless possibility. If you enjoyed the first film and have looked forward to “Lost Kingdom,” rejoice for the home release also includes nearly two-hours of behind-the-scenes footage that inform how Wan, Momoa, and the rest of the cast and crew closed out their time in Atlantis. Home Release Review: “The Color Purple” from EoM Contributor Blak Cinephile. How could one describe the timeless story of “The Color Purple”? A story about struggles, adversities, power, love and, ultimately, forgiveness? A story about a marginalized and abused woman gaining her voice and learning to enjoy life? Three women sharing an unbreakable bond of friendships as they each embark on their journeys of self-love? The correct answer is all of the above. The more important question is how do you turn a depressing yet powerful story like “The Color Purple” into a musical film? Taking inspiration from Alice Walker’s original novel, Steven Spielberg’s 1985 adaptation, and the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical itself, director Blitz Bazawule (co-director of Beyoncé’s “Black is King”) finds a way. Coming home on 4K UHD and Digital, Bazawule’s vision, billed as a “bold new take on the beloved classic,” is a stirring, rhythmic adaptation with great performances and a terrific soundtrack. Home Release Review: “Hanna-Barbera’s Superstar 10 Collection” from EoM Contributor Justin Waldman. When collections get released, the age-old question for collectors comes down to whether you get the box set or go for singular individual releases? This beautiful collection from Warner Archive brings forth some of the best of the best from Hanna-Barbera (I mean there is so much greatness in this particular catalogue and this is a sampling of a very small percentage) and presents them in glorious 1080p. Now, I know collectors can be very snobby (not shaming, stating facts. I usually fall into this category, too.) and the Blu-ray only aspect may be a turn off, however these roughly 35-year-old animated movies look the best they ever have and most likely ever will in this extensive collection. When getting down to the nitty gritty, while the box set certainly is the best value with its cost approximately the same as buying only three of the 10 movies individually, the individuals do not come with slipcovers. So, unless you’re a diehard for original art in amray cases, the box set is for you. We’re going to dive into the pros and the cons of the stunning “Hanna-Barbera’s Superstars 10 Collection.” Available on Blu-ray February 20th, 2024. Home Release Review: “Migration” from EoM Contributor Justin Waldman. Making a movie that is geared to children but still appeases the parents and the adults who are curious about the film is always a dangerous balance to achieve with the high risk of becoming too adult that it’s no longer suitable for children or becoming too childish for adults. Through its inception, Illumination has seemed to perfectly strike the correct balance with nearly all of their features leaving everyone pleasantly surprised with their product. All of this is to say that their newest outing, which has arrived at home for the viewing pleasure of everyone, “Migration,” is perfectly suitable for everyone from children to adults, and has enough messaging and adult jokes (including one fantastic geographical joke) to keep everyone, at any age, thoroughly entertained. However, it is not just a genuinely entertaining and fun movie, it is packed to the brim with special features and three mini movies featuring some of everyone’s favorite yellow helpers, the Minions! Home Release Review: “Wish.” When not compared against the bountifulness of time, 100 years is a long time. Within the last 100, three generations of Davidsons followed the arrival of my grandfather. We have fought in two world wars (nearly crossed the line into several more), fought and continue to fight for rights civil and human, and seen technology advance in ways that would make those born just 40 years ago amazed with what feats of magic and wonder we can do with objects in our pockets. The seemingly boundlessness of time creates opportunities for extraordinary creativity amid times that are often hard and heartbreaking. In this vein, last year was the centennial celebration for Walt Disney Studios, an organization that’s as responsible for global wonder as the storytellers of old, using tales of woe, lessons of morality, and other fables to entrance audiences and offer a bit of hope. Honoring the last 100 years, Walt Disney Studios released their 100th film, “Wish,” directed by Chris Buck (“Frozen II”) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (head of story on “Raya and the Last Dragon”), a film which sought to honor all that came before as they told something new. Despite being a fun tale, its reliance on what-was-then prevents “Wish” from standing enough on its own to be celebrated uniquely. Whether you enjoyed it or loved it completely, the home release edition includes more than 172 minutes of behind-the-scenes material that invites audiences behind the scenes so that all can see how the magic was conjured for this fantasy adventure meant to celebrate the House of Mickey Mouse. Review: “The Woman Under the Stage.” Actors are a superstitious lot. They may not begin that way, but as they grow and the customs of performance seep in, suddenly you’re saying “break a leg” instead of “good luck,” never saying the name of a certain Scottish play, and minding the ghostlight. These are but a few of the things that are common amongst performers, whether theatrical, television, or cinematic, as the success often means taking part in the community and their way of life, a life that’s full of challenges and uncertainty, where it doesn’t matter how good you may be if the right people don’t see your work, where your legacy may lie in merely being a stepping stone for someone else instead of tasting the glory of immortality that can come from recognition. In their first feature film, director/co-writer Ezekiel Decker and co-writer Logan Rinaldi, from a story by Decker and voice actor-turned-writer Robert Gemaehlich (“One Piece”), comes “The Woman Under the Stage,” a supernatural thriller that utilizes the superstitions, the rites of passage, that accompany the profession of acting, to ask deeper questions about purpose and what one’s willing to give of themselves to find their own. Home Release Review: “All of Us Strangers” from EoM Contributor Mallory Moore. “All of Us Strangers” is about memories, grief, and love. It’s about reconciling the past with the present and navigating the space in between. If you missed the U.S. theatrical release in December, you can stream “All of Us Strangers” now on Hulu or purchase a copy from digital retailers. Written and directed by Andrew Haigh (“Lean on Pete”), this BAFTA- and Critic’s Choice-nominated film is visually cohesive, mood-driven, and haunting. Andrew Scott (“Catherine Called Birdy”) gracefully leads the small but mighty cast as Adam, a shy and self-isolating writer. His soft-spoken and emotionally restrained performance is balanced by Paul Mescal’s (“Aftersun”) charm as Adam’s kind and caring neighbor, Harry, and Claire Foy’s (“First Man”) brightness and warmth as Adam’s mom. Rounding out the cast is Jamie Bell (“Snowpiercer”) as Adam’s father, a somewhat reserved and traditional but undeniably kindhearted man. Available on digital and Hulu February 22nd, 2024. 4K UHD Home Release Review: “Contagion” from EoM Contributor Andrew Eisenman. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S., Steven Soderbergh’s (“Ocean’s 11,” “Logan Lucky”) “Contagion” (2011) shot to the top of the streaming charts. At the time, the CEO of Warner Brothers was going all in on their streaming service HBO Max, now just Max. The next guy, the much-maligned David Zazlov, continues to make choices that are more than questionable. So, it’s taken four years for someone in Warner Brothers to finally jump on the hottest business opportunity of March 2020 and re-release “Contagion” in 4K UHD Blu-ray. Congrats to whoever that Sisyphus of Pasadena is. The disc is way better than Warner-Brother Discovery’s “WB100” releases from last year, even if it shares that menu scheme. After experiencing four years of the COVID pandemic, how does “Contagion” hold up? Poorly. Available on 4K UHD Blu-ray and digital February 27th, 2024. Home Release Review: “Next Goal Wins.” Sports films come in a variety of competitive forms including boxing, hockey, football, bobsled racing, and chess. With each one, the goal is the same: winning. But some of the great tales of competition don’t have winners, they have people who gave it their all and become something larger in the trying. The thing is, though, that folks get so wrapped up in earning the gold that they forget why they started striving for it in the first place. Before athletes join the professional ranks, before they devote themselves fully to the sport in hopes of glory and wealth, they were in it to have fun because winning wasn’t always the aim. Truth is, even when aiming for the win, if you’re not having fun, what’s the point. This is the core of filmmaker Taika Waititi’s (“Jojo Rabbit”) new film, “Next Goal Wins,” which is, itself, not just an adaptation of real events, but of a 2014 documentary of the same name. After a wide release in November 2023 and a digital release in January, Waititi’s sports dramedy “Next Goal Wins” comes home with nearly 30 minutes of behind-the-scenes materials to help explore and explain the significance of the film itself. Home Release Review: “Wonka.” Warner Bros. Pictures released three films at the end of 2023: two musicals (one a prequel and one an adaptation of a Broadway show adapting a film version of a book) and one superhero story. Though WB did advertise the superhero story as exactly what it was, for some reason neither musical (Paul King’s “Wonka” (2023) and Blitz Bazawule’s “The Color Purple”) were clearly shown to include song and dance. A choice, to be sure, as though audiences don’t enjoy a song-and-dance picture, especially ones that make people want to get up and move. All three are set to come available on physical formats soon with the first of them being King’s (“Paddington” films) take on the beloved Roald Dahl character Willy Wonka with “Little Women”’s Timothée Chalamet as the young chocolatier. If you enjoyed the pure joy of “Wonka,” be delighted to know that the home release is chockful ‘o bonus materials, with roughly 45 minutes of behind-the-scenes features on physical or digital formats that they can enjoy for the length of their ownership *or* wait for it to hit Max in March. Radiance Films Review: “Black Tight Killers.” A war photographer, a stewardess, and a chance meeting set the stage for an 87-minute technicolor adventure of crime, mystery, and romance in director Yasuharu Hasebe’s (“Retaliation”) 1966 caper “Black Tight Killers (俺にさわると危ないぜ).” The first of several collaborations with lead actor Akira Kobayashi (“Retaliation;” “The Rough One”), “Black Tight Killers” is Hasebe’s directorial debut and it incorporates as much as one can imagine in a film that reads as a simple crime story yet manages to offer strangely light entertainment through the execution of performance and narrative. Radiance Films offers this genre-defying spy spoof, a great example of Japanese ‘60s pop cinema, in a dazzling high-definition presentation accompanied by the usual expected refinements. Radiance Films Review: “Allonsanfàn” from EoM Contributor Andrew Eisenman. If you’ve never heard of the Italian Napoleonic drama “Allonsanfàn” before today, don’t worry, almost no one has. I had not heard of it until Radiance Films announced this Blu-ray release, and one of Vulture’s film critics Bilge Ebiri quote tweeted, declaring it “One of the greatest of films, from two of the greatest directors who ever lived”, and reader, he might be right. If you had heard of the film before this announcement, then you probably read Michael Brooke’s February 2012 entry in Sight and Sound magazine’s “Lost and Found” series, highlighting lost treasures in filmmaking; the same Michael Brooke who lends his voice to this disc’s incredible critic’s commentary 12 years later. Home Release Review: “Faster” from EoM Contributor Gabe Lapalombella. Dwayne Johnson (“Southland Tales”) has become one of the biggest celebrities of our time. Johnson revitalized what it meant to be a modern-day action star. Before a career breakthrough in 2011’s “Fast Five,” he took on varying B-movie-esque roles. While several of those films were forgettable, diamonds were in the rough. Amongst those diamonds is Johnson’s 2011 action film “Faster.” The story follows Driver (Dwayne Johnson), an ex-con who goes on a series of random killings that may or may not involve his crime-filled past. Along the way, Driver attracts the attention of a veteran cop (Billy Bob Thornton) who has his own secrets. That is on top of being tracked by a hitman (Oliver Jackson-Cohen). What follows is a story akin to a ‘70s Charles Bronson-like (“Death Wish”) grindhouse thriller. Available on Blu-ray February 13th, 2024. 4K UHD Steelbook Review: “Paprika.” In the world of animation, there are well-known names like Walt Disney (“Steamboat Willie”) and Matt Groening (“The Simpsons;” “Futurama”), niche names like Rebecca Sugar (“Steven Universe”), and then there are names so large that they crafted entire houses around their vision like Hayao Miyazaki (“The Boy and the Heron”) and Satoshi Kon. The latter only directed four films and a television series before his passing in 2010, but the mark Kon has made on cinema is indelible. Now, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) seeks to honor Kon’s last picture which is considered among the greats in animation, the 2006 science fiction thriller “Paprika (パプリカ),” via a brand-new limited edition steelbook with a 4K UHD video remaster and Dolby Atmos 7.1 remixed audio track that also includes a new restoration featurette and all prior legacy features. With the acclaim so great for Kon’s “Paprika,” can the restoration hold up to the expectation? Available on 4K UHD Blu-ray Combo Steelbook February 20th, 2024. 4K UHD Home Release Review: “Darkman.” Before he took audiences on an adventure through the “Multiverse of Madness” (2022), or swinging through the streets of New York several times with “Spider-Man” (2002, 2004, 2007), or battling the “Army of Darkness” (1992) in the medieval period, filmmaker Sam Raimi introduced audiences to a superhero of a different sort, one not connected to any previous cannon or lore, though deeply inspired by the style of Universal Picture’s classic monster tales, as well as the stories that inspired them. This film, “Darkman” (1990), featured Liam Neeson (“A Million Ways to Die in the West”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”), and Larry Drake (“Dr. Giggles”), and, since its original release, has spawned multiple sequels and an excited fan base. Now, 34 years later, Scream Factory offers fans a new remaster to enhance home viewing with a first-time 4K UHD edition that includes all legacy materials from the prior 2014 Scream Factory collector’s edition and new audio commentary from filmmaker “superfan” Josh Ruben (“Werewolves Within”). Arrow Video Review: “The Shaolin Plot” from EoM Contributor Blak Cinephile. You gotta love ‘70s Kung-Fu cinema. Within the first 15 minutes of Huang Feng’s “The Shaolin Plot,” a man is killed with a chicken leg, an assassination attempt is flawlessly averted, and a disobedient guest’s head is cut off by a freaking golden cymbal. Collector’s Edition Review: “Avatar: The Way of Water” from EoM Contributor Blak Cinephile. How do you bounce back from making the highest grossing film of all time? How do you follow up to such a film with a sequel? Do you double down or do you subvert expectations and sweep the floor out from under the audience? 4K UHD Release Review: “Avatar” from EoM Contributor Blak Cinephile. One man, an uncharted world, romance, war, destiny. You could apply these five things to any big-budget adventure films that have been released over time. For this review, we’re discussing James Cameron’s 2009 sci-fi adventure epic “Avatar.” The rundown: set in the year 2154, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic marine vet, is called to replace his deceased identical twin’s place on a mission to colonize the lush, beautiful planet of Pandora. Using technology to inhabit a genetically engineered avatar of the local Na’vi tribe, Jake learns of the tribe’s people and falls in love with one of their leader’s daughters, the fierce Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña). With threats being made to the Na’vi homeland, Jake must make a choice of whom he is loyal to — the military or the tribe. Therein lies the simple conflict of James Cameron’s record-breaking, highest grossing film of all time. But, as we all know, the value within “Avatar” isn’t within its simple plotting, its within its groundbreaking technological advancement and beautiful cinematography. While we’ve heard (and made) all the jokes (“it’s ‘Dances with Wolves’ with blue people!”; “It’s ‘FernGully’ actualized!”), one cannot deny the impact James Cameron’s epic has had on cinema (3D, IMAX, 4DX) and box office potential. When it comes to blockbusters bringing audiences back to the theater, there is simply before “Avatar” and after “Avatar.” Whether you are returning back to the lush world of Pandora or you’re a first-time visitor, there’s no better place to embark your destination than the “Avatar: Collector’s Edition” 4K release. Home Release Review: “Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny” from EoM Contributor Andrew Eisenman. Earlier this winter I embarked on a project of finishing all of the excessively thorough special features on my David Fincher movies, “The Social Network” (2010), “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (2008), “Gone Girl” (2014), etc.. Hearing artists of such high caliber discuss their work is awesome, but, in an overstuffed package, it can be overwhelming and even disheartening. What’s the point of making stuff when people that great exist? One of the best cures I have found to this silly insecure thought is exploring the overstuffed Blu-rays of good films made by good, but not master, filmmakers, like “Warrior” (2011) by Gavin O’Connor or “Terminal Invasion” (2002) by Sean S. Cunningham. There’s something special about listening to what amounts to normal people talking about getting their film made and solving the problems they encountered along the way. Few artists will talk more practically and in-depth or with more love than those who know they won’t get too many more soapboxes to stand on. Films that were released during the peak of the DVD era are the best place to find this experience and the new Shout! Studios release of the 2006 studio musical comedy “Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny” is a perfect example of that. Available on Blu-ray February 13th, 2024. 4K UHD Review: “Footloose.” If you’re a child of the ‘80s, there are some songs that are deeply tied to your adolescence and almost all of them come from musician Kenny Loggins. “Danger Zone” from Top Gun (1986), “I’m Alright” from Caddyshack (1980), “Meet Me Halfway” from Over the Top (1987), and, of course, “Footloose” from director Herbert Ross’s (Undercover Blues) 1984 musical drama “Footloose.” Each of these songs perfectly captures the vibe of the films from which they are forever tethered — the intensity of naval competition, the silliness of gopher hunting, the drama of trying to do right by family, and the pure joy of uninhibited dance. For its 40th anniversary, Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment is releasing Ross’s “Footloose” in a first-time 4K UHD remaster, accompanied by all the legacy special features, so that audiences can cut loose in a new era with a new format. Radiance Films Review: “Goodbye & Amen.” During the debut year for physical media boutique Radiance Films, a distributor interested in lesser-available/known international cinema, they released a wonderful three-film collection of director Damiano Damiani’s film dubbed “Cosa Nostra: Franco Nero in three Mafia Tales by Damiano Damiani.” These films each involved the mafia (as one can imagine from the name), but each one is different in tone and approach, their only other connective aspect being their leading man, Franco Nero (“Django;” “John Wick: Chapter 2”). Now, in their sophomore year, Radiance Films releases yet another Damiani film, a first-time home release for the strangely comedic spy thriller “Goodbye & Amen” (1977) starring Tony Musante (“The Bird with the Crystal Plumage”), Claudia Cardinale (“8 ½”), John Steiner (“Tenebre”), and John Forsythe (“Scrooged”). Accompanied by the usual refinements, Radiance Films once more creates an opportunity for cinephiles new and old to explore a tale of espionage and intrigue that they may have missed before. Home Release Review: “River.” If you’re not familiar with Japanese theatrical troupe Europe Kikaku, they are the talent behind 2021’s lo-fi sci-fi comedy “Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes” and 2023’s lo-fi sci-fi rom-com “River.” Both directed by Junta Yamaguchi and written by Makoto Ueda, these films delight as much due to the performances from their respective casts as they do for the inspired ways they execute their high-concept ideas through far more financially constrained budgets than your regular Hollywood releases. Their latest project, River, is set for a physical release via distributor Third Window Films, and it brings with it 80 minutes of behind-the-scenes information via two included bonus materials. Even better: it’s region-free! If you missed “River” in its festival circuit or theatrical window, this is one you should immediately snag if only for the charming execution of a lovely romantic tale amid time-looped hijinks. 4K UHD Review: “Willy’s Wonderland.” There are few actors who can seamlessly blend into any genre so that when they pop up in a movie, there’s no disruption to the flow of the film. Comedy, action, drama, horror, satire — he appears and your first thought is, “this tracks.” This thespian is, of course, the Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage whose work not only spans several decades, but whose recent work has demonstrated that he’s capable of not just quiet intensity (“Pig”) and brash grief (“Mandy”), but a self-awareness that enables him to embrace his public persona without sacrificing talent (“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent”). While each of these films were released with a certain splash, one recent release did not receive the same treatment, and that’s largely due to the timing of its release. Horror comedy “Willy’s Wonderland” was set for a theatrical opening in October 2020, but the pandemic shut that down, resulting in an initial February 2021 VOD release and *limited* theatrical before a physical edition dropped April of the same year. Now, roughly three years after its debut, the Kevin Lewis-directed (“The Accursed”) G.O. Parsons-written blood-soaked romp is getting the 4K UHD treatment via Scream Factory, joined by most of the special features that came before. Available on 4K UHD Blu-ray February 13th, 2024. Home Release Review: “The Marvels.” “Higher. Further. Faster. Together.” This is the name of the game for Marvel Studios’s 33rd release, the Nia DaCosta-directed sci-fi actioner “The Marvels,” as it sees Brie Larson reprise her role as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel and being joined by “WandaVision”’s (2021) Teyonah Parris and “Ms. Marvel”’s Iman Vellani as fellow light-based powered individuals Captain Monica Rambeau/Spectrum and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. For fans of 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” seeing Larson hit the big screen again in a non-Avengers film has been a long time coming and much desired, with some feeling underwhelmed by “The Marvels” specifically because it tries to balance too much with a runtime that’s the shortest in the entire MCU. For others, “The Marvels” is a fast-paced action comedy who’s shining moments of fun make up for the glaring issues. If you’re in the latter category, DaCosta’s “The Marvels” is now out on home video via digital ownership with a physical release to come, both of which contain various bonus features *including* the rare feature-length audio commentary from the director. Available on digital-to-own January 16th, 2024. Available on Disney+ February 7th, 2024. Available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD February 13th, 2024. Radiance Films Review: “The Sting of Death.” It’s 1985 and author Toshio Shimao releases “’The Sting of Death’ and Other Stories,” a collection of works, the primary one being described as autobiographical. Five years later, writer/director Kōhei Oguri (“Muddy River”) would adapt that central tale into his own film, “The Sting of Death (死の棘),” making a distinct story out of the tale Shimao began when he was reportedly 15 years old. Oguri’s adaptation of a marriage destroyed by infidelity featuring Keiko Matsuzaka (“The Happiness of the Katakuris”) and Ittoku Kishibe (“13 Assassins”) would go on to win the jury prize at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival. Now, some 34 years later, Radiance Films is releasing Oguri’s film on Blu-ray for the very first time, accompanied by supplemental materials to help newer audiences understand the significance of this film in the larger context of Japanese cinema.
