In early 2006, @jmhaas73 and I began work on the rock climbing guidebook for the Adirondack Park. For our first location, we picked [the aptly-named] Good Luck Cliff near Arietta 1️⃣ (📸 @lucie_wellner). We came armed with notebooks, GPS, camera, route info, clipboard, climbing kit...you name it, we brought it. We were both new to guidebook writing, and we struggled initially with our process. Should we draw the cliff by hand? Should we measure the distance between routes with a tape? How do we describe hiking directions? How do we write route descriptions? What about maps, topos, and photo diagrams? Over time we figured all this out and streamlined our process. One innovation was the use of aerial photography 2️⃣ (📸 @lucie_wellner). After taking photos from a plane, we'd print these large 3️⃣ and mount them to a board under transparency film. We'd bring these to the cliff and draw routes and cliff features directly onto the film with fine-point sharpies 4️⃣. Later we'd scan the film 5️⃣ and vectorize by hand to make to-scale topos 6️⃣. We also used voice recorders to record notes, instead of pen and paper which don't work well in the rain. We'd photograph everything, including the start of every route, which helped later when writing route descriptions. And, since this is the Adirondacks, a head net 7️⃣, bug dope, and rain gear were essential kit, as well as binoculars, snacks, camera, map, compass, and even duct tape for backcountry boat repair 8️⃣ (📸 Chris Yenkey). A smart phone has since replaced the voice recorder, GPS, map, compass, and camera. The guidebook, now in its second edition, was a huge undertaking 9️⃣.

Penn State students did an incredible job making French link sewn books in PSU History class, “History of the Book”, with @k.baldanza and & Clara Drummond @psu_scl The focus and perseverance of the class was amazing! We had a three hour window to talk about some basic bookbinding principles, and then get the books sewn up 😮💨 Everyone walked out with a completed book, thanks to the generous support and technical help from Bill Minter and Cate Ferguson from the PSU Conservation Center, and Melanie Rosenberger from @artallianceofcentralpa who assisted the students!! One of my favorite lean tools is 3P. When I facilitate & teach the Production Preparation Process I introduce clients to the idea of trystorming. With brainstorming we talk about ideas and list them out. Trystorming is quickly testing ideas before we’ve made an investment. Here I am working with a colleague to improve productivity on an assembly line. Frontline associates had a lot of non-value walking to get tools. Before we invested time/ money in revised fixtures & carts we mocked it up and tested the positioning. We are holding tools in a new position to confirm our hypothesis. Not only did that work, but we learned even more opportunities for improvement. In my work we talk about the Gemba - where value is added. I’m watching a show (Inside The Factory) where each episode the hosts visit a factory and follow the entire start to finish manufacturing process for a host of well known products. There is also the odd brief history lesson from everyone’s favourite early modern historian, Dr Ruth Goodman. It is utterly fascinating. Every aspect! I knew on some level that there is an incredible amount of automation in factories now, but some have been mind-blowing. One episode - I think it was a packaged bread company - there was a massive factory floor. It was the size of a few football fields but it was so automated there were only four staff members needed to run it all. The process of bagging the loaves was especially awesome. I kept rewinding it to watch it over and over. It was mesmerising. I’m pondering a larger one that could just dress us? We lay down in just the right spot then bang we are enveloped in an outfit and rolled away! Perfect! On the other hand certain things just can’t (yet!) be done by machines. Actual humans using tiny tongs to ensure that each individual chocolate going into a box was perfectly wrapped etc. A human at each step of milk production physically tasting and testing a small sample. A few minutes ago my eyes were glued to the screen as there were the equivalent of three or four long dining tables full of giant slabs of cheese. One solitary guy must taste every single slab. So you know - I’ve found my factory job if ever I need it. Cheese taster! I guess they can’t yet make robots with taste buds. Here's the pieces I made for Welcome Spruce Grouse starting with a painting that a friend gave me from their work (my parents' lawyer's office, because small towns...) The painting was stamped Watertown, NY and the frame had a stamp from Mexico. I have no idea how old it was but when I took it apart and ripped it into strips, it shed paint flakes EVERYWHERE, which I've never had happen when ripping up paintings in the past. I've done a lot of work with paintings I find over the years and weaving them is particularly satisfying. I then did an assortment of drawings in our gatherings as well as at home which I wove and sewed into the weavings. There's green sparkly fabric I cut to be shaped like the range of the Spruce Grouse and I'd like to do more art inspired by population and range data in the future. This was a lot of fun to work on outside as well as with folks at the library. Thank you so much to everyone who was a part ☺️

THANK YOU FRANCOIS Please look at the cut marks on this worked bone piece. This is what I see, your thoughts would be appreciated. Bottom left, they cut into the bone at an angle. Then they cut straight all the way through till near the bottom. Then snapped the end off. Last year I was exhibiting my Mudlarking finds at the Roman Amphitheater in the depths of London Guildhall. One of the many people that attended the event was Francois Jordaan. @fjordaan2015 Francois had been Mudlarking the morning before visiting the exhibition and brought with him something that he had found on the foreshore earlier that day. He showed me the object that he had found and asked me what I thought it was. I said that I thought that it was the waste bone rod from bone dice production. On two sides of the rod there were a number of holes that I believed to be test dots, made before the maker proceeded with the marking of the blank sides of the worked rod of bone. A number of months later Francois made contact and gifted me with this beautiful worked bone piece. I haven’t posted it until now as after showing it to a number of people in the Mudlark community, there was a few people who were not sure of what it was. At one of the exhibition’s this month I was able to show the piece to two Finds Liaison Officers from The Museum of London. Both confirmed that it is indeed the waste from bone dice production and similar ones were found during excavations at the site of the Fleet prison. This piece now has pride of place alongside my bone dice collection, always front and central in this years exhibition’s. HOW CRUDE OIL IS REFINED: Have you ever wondered how crude oil is converted into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, kerosene etc. in a refinery? We're going to explore the process. Using three basic steps, refineries break crude oil down into its various components, which are then reconfigured into new products. These steps are: separation, conversion, and treatment. Separation involves piping crude oil through hot furnaces. The resulting liquids and vapors are discharged into distillation units. Inside the distillation units, the liquids and vapors separate into petroleum components called fractions. Heavy fractions are on the bottom, and light fractions are on the top. The lightest fractions, including gasoline and liquefied refinery gases, vaporize and rise to the top of the distillation tower, where they condense back to liquids. Medium weight liquids, including kerosene and distillates, remain in the middle of the distillation tower. Heavier liquids, called gas oils, separate lower in the tower, and the heaviest fractions with the highest boiling points settle at the bottom of the tower. The next step, conversion, uses a process called "cracking", because it uses heat, pressure, catalysts, and sometimes hydrogen to crack molecules into lighter ones. A cracking unit consists of one or more tall, thick-walled, rocket-shaped reactors and a network of furnaces, heat exchangers, and other vessels. The finishing touches occur during the final treatment process. To make gasoline, refineries combine a variety streams from the processing unit. Octane level, vapor pressure ratings, and other special considerations determine the gasoline blend.
