Got this piece back today after it spent some time in STL for the Fiber Focus exhibition and then in the loving home of my dear friend @mandy.pedigo. “Implications,” 2019, won honorable mention, and I got a super cool HANDMADE ribbon for the award. I immediately hung it on my fridge once I came home. . . . #textiles #mixedmedia #embroidery #sewing #silk #quiltingpins #implications #fiberart #mfa #fineart #art #artist #sculpture #fiberfocus2019 #innovationsintextilesstl2019 First photo by @claire_krienitz_photo

People have a unique philosophical capacity to conceive of death before it happens, and the knowledge of our mortality is both ever-present and hidden within our cultural existence. In an effort to salve the dread of our impermanence, we build up a number of notions and practices, from retaining momentos and photographs, to surrounding ourselves with objects that bring comfort and nostalgia, to keeping rituals for remembrance and protection, even to celebrating the fragility of life in the natural world. Hannah Reeves’s most recent work brings together symbols of these various human efforts, combining portraiture with references to Victorian lockets, memento mori, reliquaries, and natural predator-prey relationships. Hand-stitched drawing and domestic fabric patterns help demonstrate the artist’s awareness of time, relating to both pass-time and time-past, situating the work at the edge of the realm of framed cross-stitch, sentimental and familiar, yet housing reminders of the fragility and temporality of life. . . . #lastcall #sagerbraudisgallery #octoberexhibit #fiberart #fiberartist #contemporaryfibers #stitcheddrawing #innovationsintextilesstl2019 #missourifiberartists

Congrats @cranbrookfiber alum @vanessa_viruet. On your solo show. #Repost @mizzoufibers (@get_repost) ・・・ Viruet interacting with her work White Hooped Bandana, 2018. Silkscreen on fabric, hoop earrings. VANESSA VIRUET FLAGGED EXHIBITION DATES: September 23-October 17, 2019 Statement: Vanessa Viruet straddles borders. In her own words, “[She’s] not quite Puerto Rican enough, American enough, or Queer enough, and [her] work is an attempt to understand those distinctions.” Her artistic practice is dedicated to material explorations through the language of flags. The emblem of a flag is used to construct meaning and identity, serving as a mirror for examining the cultural self. She uses the bandana as an example of socioeconomic cloth, one associated with her own upbringing. Flagging and introducing this icon into a gallery setting is an effort in connecting the vast space between the art world and various communities of those often labeled as “outsiders”. Viruet exaggerates scale as a literal and symbolic gesture of intervention, a way of colonizing and claiming space in the world as a queer, Latina woman from el Barrio. @vanessa_viruet @binghamgallery #vanessaviruet #binghamgallery #mizzou #mizzousvs #mizzouart #fibers #fiberart #textiles #innovationsintextilesstl2019 #mizzoufibers #textileart #puertorico #flags #bandanas #fiber

Future Tense is the student exhibition put on by the Surface Design Association, taking place at the @edwardsville_arts_center . . . I will be talking about my work and my community. These mothers and friends you see here. Cause it just isn't possible without other people. #artistmotherco #figuringitout #studiowithkids #sdaconference #innovationsintextilesstl2019 #collectivemendingsessions #catherinereinhart #surfacedesignassociation

Tu as pris ton temps. . . . @jeanne_vicerial @villa_medici #cliniquevestimentaire @ensadparis #ensadlab @ensad.alumni.paris @psl_univ @mines_paristech @univdauphine @enamoma_by_psl #textile #arttextile #fibres #mode #modeaparis #fashionresearch #fashionschool #parisfashionweek2019 #innovationsintextilesstl2019

The artist writes: “I am drawn to old, worn and tattered pieces of cloth that easily could be thrown away – especially in a society that celebrates the new. I find beauty in ravaged pieces of fabric, so I give them new life. I stitch them together by hand, with needle and thread, slowly and over time, in contrast to our high tech world where speed is paramount. Pieced together, they tell a new story for the viewer to discover. Threadbare will feature hand-stitched works, as well as a wall of eco-printed paper scraps and mono-prints, cardboard boxes, hand-made books, items from nature and whatever else strikes my fancy.” Suzy Farren www.suzyfarren.com www.facebook.com/events/485880872216087/ Erica Popp Studio + Gallery, 3271 Roger Place, St. Louis, MO 63116. 314/626-3199. @innovationsintextilesstl partner @sheldonstl presents "It's Not You, It's Me: A Declaration of Independence." Free reception Friday, October 4, 5-7 p.m. Free gallery talk Saturday, October 5, 11:15-11:45 a.m. Exhibit runs October 4–November 30, 2019 This exhibition curated by fashion designer Michael Drummond showcases innovative works in fashion, photography and performance art by local and regional artists who investigate the narrative possibilities within fashion idioms and fiber art as they intersect with issues of identity and power. The artists all use the medium of fiber in some way to speak on issues of gender and race. Embedded in social norms is the idea of “dressing for success,” however today people often find more importance in expressing their identity and individuality through clothing and adornments. The show’s title comes from the cliché, passive aggressive phrase often used in breakups and turns it on its head, making it instead a statement of empowerment. The exhibition features works by Mary Collins, Nina Ganci, Nasheli Juliana, Larry Krone and Todd Oldham, Qun Yiyao Liu, Yvonne Osei, Kat Reynolds, Cory Sever, Chloë Simmons, Todd Thomas, and others. The historically black neighborhood has been the home of many great figures. In this body of work we honor the lives of past great figures and the current residents of the North Saint Louis area. Youth, elders and community members come together for an interwoven outdoor installation led by artists Dail Chambers and Elizabeth Vega, with ArthouseSTL (3911 Greer Avenue) and the Greer Collective. The outdoor installation will flow throughout the 3900 block of Greer Avenue. “Mti Wraps” is an outdoor public art project focused on trees. “Mti” is tree in Kiswahili. Rhythm, repetition and pattern accentuates the gesture and form of the tree. Through the use of fabric, this place-based project brings color and unity in a neighborhood environment. In the Greater Ville area of Saint Louis, artist Dail Chambers has worked with neighbors, artists and community groups, creating a public conversation with urban ecology. The project accentuates the natural aspects of an urban environment while simultaneously uplifting elements of an African aesthetic throughout a historically black (African/American) space. Participating artists include Aileen Woods, Antigone Chambers Reed, Daniyah Harper, Derek K. Laney, Luna Imani, Jaya, Micah, Ndea Collins-Whitfield, Youth of Bread & Roses, Mo. Youth Initiative, Students of LaSalle Middle School, Darnell Chambers, Dail Chambers. This project is partially sponsored by Yeyo Arts Collective. Textile art I created from chopsticks woven with strips of fabric and recycled Sari silk yarn. It will be on display this month at the Lillian Yahn Gallery in Winghaven, O'Fallon, Missouri. This is the first time one of my pieces has been accepted into an art exhibit! The exhibit is called "Out of My Comfort Zone" and features unusual and unfamiliar concepts and techniques. There is a reception on October 18 from 6:30 to 8:30. Also, there's a free gallery talk this Saturday at 1:30 in conjunction with the Innovations in Textiles bus tour arrival. I'll be going to both. This artwork is featured in Art Saint Louis' "Fiber Focus 2019" exhibition juried by Arturo Alonzo Sandoval. Presented at Art Saint Louis September 28-October 24, 2019. Free reception Saturday, October 5, 5-7 p.m. Pictured: Sharon Havelka, Memphis, TN. "Soundproof Forest." 2019. Wooden Cigar Box, Soundproof Material, Recycled Fabric, 20”x18”x6”. Not for Sale. www.sharonhavelka.com Artist's statement: “I am an artist and a nurse. I enjoy combining the physiology of the human body and brain with the elements and meanings of art. For example, I convey circulation with color, perfusion with light and dark values, and breath with composition and negative space. I also use a collection of odd items arranged in unconventional ways. I mix recycled materials with found objects, like my family's old clothes with sidewalk treasures. I use egg yolk and matcha tea for paint, and coffee, tea, or onion skin to stain. The reconstruction of found object demonstrates the balance between freedom of choice and fatalism of life. It is important that art follows life. Drawn from the remnants of the worn out and the discarded, I create forms that evoke both the imaginary and the biological fusing craft, science, and art.” #fiberfocus2019 #artsaintlouis #artstlouis #innovationsintextilesstl2019 #downtownstlouis #surfacedesignassociation #fiberart #textiles
