The Tale of Shiuli, Parijat Once upon a time, lived a Princess Parijata, who fell in love with Surya, the Sun God. However, the intense heat of Surya, made Parijata wilt, and she died. The Gods, sympathetic to this doomed love story, gave the Princess a new life in the form of the shiuli/parijat tree. It’s believed that the Sun God visits the tree/Princess at night and so the flowers are fragrant at night. Time changes everything! Today I retraced my steps and set foot inside Charging Cross Hospital in Hammersmith where I spent my first five years from 1981 undergoing my nursing training and subsequent employment as a qualified nurse. This fantastic stained glass window wasn’t here then. It dominates the entrance hall and is by Keith Grant appropriately titled ‘Millenium New World One’ as it seems to have been commissioned in 1999 for the turn of the century. In 1960 he won a Norwegian Government Scholarship which inspired a mural painting also on the first floor titled Norwegian Fjord.
