April 2024. Horseshoe Beach (first five photos) and art at the Princess Hamilton (last five photos) Being an introvert who melts in direct sunlight, I am not one to lay about on a crowded beach. I do, however, enjoy experiencing beaches when it is cloudy/cool and when no one else is there. I therefore visited Bermuda’s famous Horseshoe Beach in the morning on an April weekday. The beach is free to visit and close to bus stops. There is a restaurant and changing rooms, and I think umbrellas etc to rent (I was there before anything opened). The beach is known for pink sand, though during my visit the pink wasn’t that pronounced. The water’s beauty and various shades of blue were breathtaking, though. To the right of the main beach is a little cove where a local was enjoying a wade. We exchanged pleasantries, and before she left she took my photo (thanks, kind woman). I took her place in the water, bringing my backpack with me and placing it on a rocky outcropping, and enjoyed a little swim. Multicolored fish darted here and there, and life was beautiful. After my swim, I walked about the beach area. Small groups were arriving, but the place still felt fairly empty. Highly recommend going early on a weekday if you do not like crowds or heat. The other photos are of some of the many pieces of art on display at the Princess Hamilton. That hotel is a gallery unto itself. Den Felsbogen erreicht man aber nur durch Bewältigung eines starken Anstiegs und durch Einsatz aller vier Pfoten (oder eben Händen und Füßen). Von oben hat man aber eine einmalige Aussicht. Und ich war richtig stolz auf meine Menschen, dass sie DAS geschafft haben. 😂🥰🐶 Yay, climbing! And at one of the most beautiful sights on the island! You can only reach the rock arch by climbing a steep slope and using all four paws (or hands and feet). But the view from the top is unique. At the end of the trail we found a rainbow! 🌈 There is a trek from Nongriat Village that leads to Rainbow Falls, this aptly named waterfall where there is often a rainbow to be found. It’s a beautiful trek through unspoilt forest and we were lucky to have a strong rainbow and the place to ourselves! I love this photo for 2 reasons: because rainbows are my favourite thing, and because it reflects how I was really feeling that day. Travel isn’t always easy, and I wasn’t feeling my best. My recovering foot was aching by this point, I hadn’t been sleeping well, and I loved the scenery and being with my friends but knew I needed some time alone. I’m quite an introvert and hadn’t travelled with a group before, and I was realising how much I need quiet processing time by this point! Luckily our group of women was incredibly supportive and gave me space when I needed it. 📍Kellands Pond Te Waipounamu / South Island, Aotearoa / New Zealand. Discovered this little spot near Twizel by chance when I pulled over down a side path for a break along my drive from Tāhuna (Queenstown) to Takapō (Lake Tekapo) on a foggy autumn’s day. We had to kill some time between landing in Iceland and checking into our hotel. So we went to @bluelagoonis because everybody said to try it. We got there at 8am and immediately got a morning beer at the swim up bar and just hung out. We also did the face masks... They tell you what each mask is for. We're applying the exfoliating mask in this picture. We had more drinks and just wandered around. This place is huge, which makes it easier for people to disperse and not feel too crowded. To get away from it all… So often, I hear that’s what people want when they travel. Iceland was certainly the answer for me. I had experienced things on my first visit by signing up for tours and heading out by bus or van which was great in that I could relax and the guides offered great stories about the country’s fascination with trolls and faeries, but I didn’t like following a set itinerary with no chance to linger or hurry on to the next stop depending on my personal interests. The solo trip in a rental car better suited my travel style—and my personality—on my return visit. I made countless impromptu stops, sometimes for just a moment, other times for a longer wander. Once I was a few hours away from Reykjavík, it often felt like I had the roads and the landscapes all to myself. If at first you don’t succeed… My first trip to Iceland was in early January 2019. That meant five hours of light per day. Tour operators timed things precisely to maximize what visitors could see but, with a base in Reykjavík, many things couldn’t be covered on a day trip. There was a glacial lagoon I wanted to see, but no one would go there. Why then taunt me with gorgeous photos in travel brochures? I would have to come back. (Oh, that’s why. 💰💰💰) Between trips, I came across the Icelandic band KALEO online and one of their videos shot at Fjallsárlón, the glacial lagoon, the lead singer wearing a classic Icelandic sweater. (The video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCi0RHLrauU .) I got goose bumps watching then and had the same reaction rewatching today. In 2022, I returned, only in late May with what seemed like endless light. Over the course of a week, I traveled the Ring Road (Route 1) counter-clockwise around the whole island, stopping countless times, never feeling rushed. I made it to Fjallsárlón and to Jökulsárlón, another glacial lagoon fifteen minutes farther east. Something wasn’t right about the sun on the evening when I arrived. The beauty couldn’t be captured on camera. My lodging was another half hour beyond so I backtracked the next day to get better shots and to take in the sights once again. The morning revisit gave me the chance to experience the lagoons before tour buses arrived from Reykjavík, a bonus for an introverted solo traveler. I didn’t have the lagoons completely to myself but those of us who were present gave one another plenty of space, each of us imagining the lagoons as our little secret. I tried and tried again.
