Today’s vinyl hit is Toots In Memphis by Toots Hibbert which was released in 1988 on the Mango, an Island sub-label. Produced by the late and highly underrated Memphis musician Jim Dickinson, the album is anchored by fellow Jamaicans Sly & Robbie with Mikey Chung and some fine local players like Mabon ‘Teenie’ Hodges, Eddie Hinton and The Memphis Horns. One track aside, everything here is Toots’ versions of soul classics including songs made famous by Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Al Green, Ann Peebles & James Carr. None of these versions surpass the originals, but Toots is in fine voice and delivers terrific interpretations of these well-known songs. I had the pleasure of seeing Toots & The Maytals twice and he was the most exciting reggae artist I have ever witnessed (witnessed being the perfect descriptor as the concerts approached full gospel fervour. Almost 30 years ago. Drove my 1970 VW bus from nyc down to memphis with @twodollarguitar & gotta massive flu. Met up with @steveshelley at @easleystudios with a young @stuartsikes as assist engineer who took me to “Suga’s” juke joint under the overpass where i had the intergalactic luck of having a drink with #jamescarr where he asked a few, but heavy questions. @memphisrobertgordon had coincidentally visited the studio that afternoon telling stories of the legendary James Carr & how he had been searching hi & low for him; to interview him for his classic book: #itcamefrommemphis I caught up with #trumanswater on that tour after i made my way down through the south, stopping in Nola & leaving the beautiful bus near where Pee Wee’s dinosaurs stand, at a Citgo in Indio, CA. A lady in a dusty Lincoln Continental coupe, had two black eyes & a kid with a very dirty face in the backseat, sat crying with both her hands on the steering wheel. I knocked on her window, put the keys to my VW bus in her hand, gave her the title & told her the right head gasket was a bust & the oil seals had all come undone, but she could sell it for a few hundred bucks. & on my way i went, in the back of a pick up truck to play my first ever show in LA in Silverlake at Spaceland… En route to change my life forever: to end that tour in Portland, OR & to take my GED & try to teach kids in after care at the YMCA. #goals I was gonna sell the VW bus. Showed up with enough for one months rent in the house i shared with sev homies off Alberta St. I ate rice. I sold copies of Myra Lee Steve sent me in the mail. I ate more rice. I applied & interviewed for the after school care at YWCA five times in 3 months. Couldnt find a job anywhere. All it did was rain. @gctjim got me a show in New Jersey & a show in Philly to pay for my airfare back to NYC. My dream of being some kind of a “teacher”, down the drain. I met a lotta good people out there, Richard Meltzer, Toody & Fred from Dead Moon, reunited with my old punk record collector homie @landfillrescueunit & even got to become buds with @stephenmalkmus at a decent college type house party.

The best. What does it even mean? By whose standard? What metrics? These proclamations are treacherous and yet that kind of palaver undergirds so many music discussions that it is futile or alienating. And yet, when you love something, and really love it, you proselytize. James Carr is one of those artists bandied about as the best R&B vocalist ever. His catalog is small. But mighty. Fierce even. His voice is gruff, but vulnerable. Akin to sandpaper, but that fine grain doesn't wear you down. Instead, it smoothes you troubles. Because he knows the rigors of love and can testify to them in a way that every strangled line conveys he gets how it feels. Despite that, Carr is one of those artists you need to dig a bit to find He was on the tiny Goldwax, which operated in the shadow of Stax and Hi. And he struggled with mental well-being, exacerbated by weed use, which scuppered his career. But on this album, you hear what he had at his best, and that was an uncanny ability to inhabit a song in ways few of his contemporaries could quite match. Just listen to Pouring Water on a Drowning Man and try not reaching for a life preserver. Or check out his version of Dark Side of the Street, where loving so wrong has never sounded so woeful or necessary an act as it does in his hands. But that is my bias. Your mileage may vary. Reading everyone’s posts about their fave albums found this year has led me to post about one of the best LPs I’ve ever owned - James Carr’s A Man Needs a Woman on Goldwax. I first became aware of Carr through Dark End of the Street in its Flying Burrito Bros version in my late teens. A few years later, in the mid-90’s, a buddy of mine stumbled across this album for peanuts. I begged him to let me have it, and I’m forever grateful that he did. This is a perfect album, there’s no other way to put it. James Carr’s voice is like the table of the elements if each square represented one of the emotions on the sad side of the spectrum; misery, betrayal, etc etc. He was a troubled man whose ability to articulate pain remains virtually unmatched. It’s one of the best albums I’ve ever heard, or likely ever will hear- decades later, I still listen to it often; I played it twice in a row yesterday. If social media is to be believed, and that's thin ice, then it’s quite a lot. For some (men) it’s daily. Apparently. Not this guy. A while ago my significantly better half asked me what my Roman Empire was. What subject do I keep coming back to? I think about music but particularly musicians. I’m fascinated by them (you may have noticed). Where did that lyric, beat or riff come from? What were they like off-stage? How did they get onto the stage? Who did they meet, idolise or despise? What made them...them. For me, it's an endless pursuit to hear and learn more (the Tina documentary is essential viewing btw). I want to make connections. Understand the art and the artist. All that. This is true for all the music and musicians I love but especially Soul. These pioneers pay rent in a special part of my head and heart. I love them and what they made. Almost without exception they are incredible people who led and lead incredible lives. Despite the often harsh hand life gave them they gifted the world some of the most remarkable, exuberant life improving moments in all of music. Turner singing Proud Mary is one such example. Fogerty's cloaked allegory of leaving the army - a tale of fleeing to find freedom becomes a deeply personal pledge from Tina to leave her abusive husband. A woman trapped needing escape. She sings this from the heart because she was Mary. Again, it's all in the powerful and moving documentary. I think about it often. Tina, Mavis, Sam, Marvin, Maybelle, LaVern, Otis, Wilson, Etta, Betty, David, Freddie, Carla, Mahalia, Donny, Bobby, Aretha, Tammi, Solomon, James, Ruth, Ronnie...and the rest...you are my Roman Empire.

These Ain't Raindrops, James Carr Well, that was a wet weekend! 📷 September 🎵 A great song from the outstanding James Carr. Despite the crushing disappointment of being turned down by Stax, he managed to record two albums worth of truly superb soul music between 1966-1968. A voice of pure passion, heart and soul. Raw and unfiltered. Due to significant mental health problems he struggled to tour (he’d freeze on stage) and as a result his career never really went the way his talent deserved. Before being institutionalised, what he did record is incredible - almost every song is something special. A great example of quality over quantity, his best work definitely deserves to be alongside Sam, Otis, Marvin, Wilson, Solomon and the rest of those guys.

Rolled the dice and am sure glad I did. My initial impression was “meh” and may have even said something like “poor man’s Otis” 😂 But after a few spins I’m retracting here. This record is pretty amazing and I’m so glad I’m fortunate enough to own this original copy in such great condition. Many more spins to come. 🧡

James Carr – You got my mind messed up (1967), Goldwax Records This week's theme: Messed up minds 👉Swipe for a sample! (I love it when obscure albums have a Dutch press). One of the best soul singers that ever lived, but also the one the big audience didn't know about. James Carr was a much troubled soul, with a bumpy career and mental health problems It’s almost a wonder, Carr was able to give us two epic longplayers. So reel, so painful, so deep, you really feel his struggle in life! Even the recording sessions were a challenge, he had the habit to wander off alone and get lost for several days. His debut is nothing less than a stone cold classic from start till finish, a masterpiece of Southern Soul. It took him some time to find a label deal, Stax refused him (one of the few mistakes Stax made. Together with Aretha, refused when Jerry Wexler offered her to Jim Stewart probably their biggest misses...) in ’64, but Memphis label Goldwax and owner Quinton M. Claunch were ready to take the change. This record probably is known for the famous Dann Penn/ Chip Moman pennend "The dark end of the street” song. Covered by many, but nobody comes even close to this version, truly the definite version. To many winners, but ‘Pouring water on a drowning man’, ‘These ain’t raindrops’, ‘I’m going for myself now’ are personal favs. The title track is one of my favourite soultracks ever ‘You’ve got my mind messed up’ is classic Memphis: rough, sweaty uptempo stomping Southern Soul. Steve Cropper's (on of the session players) guitar is on fire here! This is one of my records with the most spin time. James Carr is a Southern Soul grandmaster and the only one (with O.V.
