ROTD 99! The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend – Baby Huey & The Babysitters James Thomas Ramey released his one and only record in 1971; The Baby Huey Story: The Living Legend. Put out on Curtom, it was produced by the label boss himself, Curtis Mayfield. Ramey went by the stage name Baby Huey, a self-deprecating moniker borrowed from a massive cartoon duck. He would introduce himself on stage with “I’m Big Baby Huey, and I’m 400 pounds of soul” – for my euro-readers, we’re talking over 180kg. Ramey suffered from a glandular disorder which, paired with a keen interest in heroine, led to his tragic and untimely death of a heart attack in 1970 at the ripe old age of 26. The most observant amongst you will have noted the slight discrepancy between Ramey’s death and his debut record’s release. Indeed, this was a posthumous album! Having been touring since the early 60s, Baby Huey and his band The Babysitters had never settled down to record; instead releasing a couple of singles and focussing on live performances. It wasn’t until Curtis Mayfield corralled them into his Curtom studios in 1970 that they laid down some tracks. Sadly, Ramey passed away during the recording. In fact, he only features on five of the eight tracks. After Baby Huey’s death, Mayfield asked the Babysitters to record three instrumentals to bulk out the recording to album length. The final track list features two originals by Ramsey, three Mayfield-penned tunes (including the blistering Hard Times), and three covers. The result is a brilliantly chaotic balancing act lurching from Psychedelic Rock to classic Soul. It’s relentless – at times truly epic – presentation makes for a real whirlwind listen. Ramey’s voice is up there with many of the greats. From growls to high pitched screams, he effortlessly holds his own against the backdrop of The Babysitters’ fiery instrumentations. Unbelievably, The Living Legend was more or less ignored upon release and remained an obscure curio for many years. Today, it enjoys a small but dedicated following – due perhaps to it being extensively sampled by various Hip Hop acts including Ghostface Killah, Eric B & Rakim, Kool Herc, and Ice Cube.
