In the 1930s, there was blues music, primarily 12-bar songs based around day-to-day experiences, and there was gospel music which anticipated what they hoped would be coming when they died. In the mid-1950s, artists like Etta James and Wilson Pickett merged R&B with gospel music to create electrifying hits – and from that combination came soul music. I'm pretty sure I own all of the albums from The Impressions. I found out about them years back. Curtis Mayfield was the driving force. Lead vocals, arranger and guitarist. They were fueled by Gospel and early Rhythm & Blues. Curtis even helped the career of Major Lance by writing songs, producing and getting The Impressions to sing backup. This is their debut album. The single is the group’s best-known hit, reaching No.3 on the Billboard R&B chart and No.14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The gospel-influenced track was a Curtis Mayfield composition that displayed the growing sense of social and political awareness in his writing. In 2021, Rolling Stone named “People Get Ready” the 122nd greatest song of all time. It was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998. In 2015, the song was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry due to its “cultural, historic, or artistic significance”. Although Curtis had already left the group by '72 his handwork is all over this album in production. Leroy takes a step forward and shines on this one showing some of his genius as a vocalist, songwriter and arranger(I refrain from using the word "producer" because a producer's job was a bit different in the 70s than what it is today)-"This Love's For Real" is an example of Leroy's genius which was in large his composition. I've mentioned in the soul groups post I made a while back the Impressions are one of my favorite soul groups to ever do it, here's in my opinion an all around excellent soul album by the band.

Trouble Man v. Super Fly: battle of the blaxploitation soundtracks from 1972 🎬 It's #vinylbattlewednesday hosted by @vinylwife, and it's a David and Goliath battle. Super Fly is the more popular film, it's the OST with the hit singles, and it's a smorgasbord of 90s hip hop samples. My spine actually *tingles* during the opening - Super Fly carries so much memory and history, and Curtis incorporates so many of the innovations of his era (touches of Isaac Hayes, the Temptations/Norman Whitfield, and indeed, even Marvin Gaye influences). For its part, Trouble Man is closer to a score in the traditional sense, and to the Shaft OST. Marvin sounds like he has properly 'done his homework' in creating moods that support the images, and he deliberately keeps his own voice in the background (often as an ambient or ghostly texture). But when he does bring his voice up front - e.g. the quick rap on the title track - Gaye is truly incredible. Trouble Man is harder work for the listener, and simply doesn't have the thrills of Super Fly. But it's also worth that effort, and achieves some more delicate and difficult moods. It's been awhile since I last posted; here's a nice haul from my 2nd trip to Soundtracks in Beverly @soundtracksbeverly. Of course they have film music, plus sizable Hip-Hop and Jazz sections, but also a lot of other musical oddities across various genres and niches - Disco, R&B, Prog, Krautrock, just to scratch the surface. I've had a few weeks to give these all some spins by now: Nico Fidenco - Emanuelle and the White Slave Trade - Felt compelled to grab this as I'm making my way through the Black Emanuelle boxset - low-rent Disco for a low-rent flick, but Nico had hooks Bruno Nicolai - Il Conde Dracula - This score rules, it's too bad Nicolai didn't get the chance to do more Gothic and supernatural Horror films Ennio Morricone - Il Bandito Dagli Occhi Azzuri - Never seen this film, the score is a smoother style of Jazz than the ominous staccato of earlier Morricone Crime films. Not in love with it but it's a very nice LP Stelvio Cipriani - Sono Stato Un Agente CIA - Hadn't seen this one either but I found it on YouTube (English title Covert Action), it's a good late Italo-Crime film though David Janssen is kind of a miserable protagonist. Good score, Cipriani brings his usual airy melodies with a dash of Greek folk flavor in spots The Impressions - Three The Hard Way - A fun Soul/R&B score that narrates one of the more action-packed entries in the 1970s Black cinema/Blaxploitation canon. The lyrics are as silly as the plot (like Jim Kelly's acting), but the harmonies are tight, and the grooves kick ass (like Jim Kelly's kung fu) Atomic Rooster - Atomic Roooster - A+ reissue of this Heavy/Psych Rock debut, great album Tangerine Dream - Le Parc - Studio album #14 (1985) is poppier and more song-oriented than the mid-70s TD albums I'm familiar with, still lots of multilayered synth atmosphere on hand to enjoy though Bruno Nicolai - Rendez Vous - This 1975 album was conceived as a soundtrack to an imagined film, a thriller. It's not all new music (the opener "Rendez-Vous" is a variation on the murder theme from "Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key"), but it is a damn good album, no surprise given Nicolai's contributions to the Giallo

Curtis Mayfield is repping the (312) for the Area Codes playlist selection. The (312) covers the city of Chicago, including downtown, the Chicago Loop, and its immediate surroundings. Mayfield, who was born in Chicago, moved to the North Side and met Jerry Butler in 1956 at the age of 14. He would join Butler’s soul/doo-wop/gospel/r&b group, The Impressions, soon after. Mayfield’s first solo album, Curtis, was released in 1970 and hit the top 20, as well as being a critical success. It pre-dated Marvin Gaye’s album, What’s Going On, to which it has been compared in addressing social change.
