Humoresque "" 1946 " Joan Crawford 🌈💕💘🌈 - Humoresque was Crawford’s follow-up to her epic, Oscar-winning comeback in Mildred Pierce the previous year. It would be followed by Possessed, another excellent film, in 1947, to form a three-year run of knockout releases. She looks incredible, stunning, beautifully styled, in gowns by her old fashion guru Adrian, who had costumed her throughout her career at MGM. The role of Helen Wright, the scandalous, tortured society lady who tragically falls for Paul Boray, Garfield’s prickly, self-involved concert violinist, is a perfect fit for Crawford’s strengths as an actress. Helen is all nerves and sharp elbows. She drinks more than anyone I can think of in a movie, in every possible place including the haberdasher where she takes Paul to get him some proper suits—the staff knows her well and apparently keeps bottle, glass, and ice on hand so the poor thing won’t have to survive half an hour without a couple of highballs. Helen is constantly fixing a drink or sipping one or swirling brandy in a snifter. In the rare instances she can’t drink, like at Paul’s concerts, she instead fiddles with her spectacles. Either way, Helen is preoccupied by her glasses, both the kind that blur her thinking, and the others that momentarily sharpen her vision.... #diva👑 #classic #filmnoir #joancrawford #johngarfield #dress #dream #drink #hollywoodstar #legend #me #comeback #oldhollywood #goodbye #blackandwhite #hollywoodstudios #perfect #oscars #perfect #top

Joan Crawford photographed in 1949 by Bert Six. “Unfortunately everything we learn from life comes slowly; wisdom, especially, and yet wisdom is the only thing that gives beauty or depth of character. Nothing could be more pathetic than those who fear age instead of looking forward to maturity. I believe if you live day by day for each God-given hour, you are preparing for the future and a good one. You must be grateful for what you have, discontent with what you’ve achieved; I’ve always wanted the woman I am to be the foundation for the woman I can be. My friend June Taylor [asked], ‘What’s the secret?’ The answer to that—a capacity for living develops through a determination to grow with each experience, happy or otherwise.” — Joan Crawford

#ConstanceBennett ✨☁️ Born Constance Campbell Bennett on October 22, 1904 in NYC to successful stage actor Richard Bennett, and literary agent Adrienne Morrison; who also briefly acted in silent films. Constance was the eldest of three girls – making her the big sister to #JoanBennett and #BarbaraBennett, who would also go on to appear in pictures and enter Hollywood (Joan becoming the most successful). Constance’s acting debut would be at the young age of 12, in the 1916 silent film titled THE VALLEY OF DECISION which also included sisters Barbara and Joan – all three portraying “unborn souls”; The film starred their parents, and was written by their father. Richard Bennett was an actor who made two incredible transitions, from the stage to the screen, and from silent pictures to the talkies. The Bennett sisters’ maternal grandparents, Rose Wood and Lewis Morrison, were also accomplished actors in their time. Constance’s early career consisted of appearances in New-York produced silent pictures (such as RECKLESS YOUTH, 1922 & INTO THE NET, 1924), until her meeting with #SamuelGoldwyn of Metro Goldwyn Mayer – which would lead to her Hollywood debut in the 1924 drama CYTHEREA, and make her a hit. Shortly after, Bennett would marry in 1925 to Philip Plant and cast aside her budding silent film career; until their divorce in 1929. But exuberant Constance would return to Hollywood with a bang & go on to attain further stardom 🌟 making her talkie debut in RICH PEOPLE (‘29); transitioning from silent pictures to talkies like a breeze. By 1931, Constance Bennett was one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses. 💬 CAPTION CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS 💬

Joan Crawford and Clark Gable in Love on the Run (1936) "During the thirties she paddled calmly along the stream of success in a golden canoe. Clark Gable, Franchot Tone, Bob Montgomery and Bob Young alternated, often in pairs, as her leading men, and Joan became one of the biggest female draws at the box office, her fans legion.” — Life Magazine In one scene Franchot Tone’s character tries to cheer up Joan Crawford’s character, saying: “Knock-knock,” “Who’s there?,” “Machiavelli,” “Macchiavelli who?,” “Machiavelli good soup for $10!” Most modern sources claim that ‘Knock Knock’ jokes were first recorded in 1606 in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. Though, they did not gain popularity in modern culture until 1936, evolving from ‘did you know? did you know who?’ jokes of the 1920s. In 1936, Bob Dunn authored the book Knock Knock: Featuring Enoch Knox, and is regarded by some as having invented the modern knock-knock joke. Some argue that Love on the Run may be one of the first films to feature a ‘Knock knock’ joke. (source: afi)

Joan Crawford’s last public appearance in 1974, with Rosalind Russell. She was horrified at the way she looked and withdrew from view forever more. I think apart from the bad wig she looks fabulous. Lucille Ball, Vivian Vance and Joan Crawford in the episode The Lost Star, on the Lucy Show. Crawford guest-starred as herself on The Lucy Show. The episode, "Lucy and the Lost Star", first aired on February 26, 1968. Crawford struggled during rehearsals and drank heavily on-set, leading series star Lucille Ball to suggest replacing her with Gloria Swanson. Crawford was letter-perfect the day of the show, however, and received two standing ovations from the studio audience so take that Lucy! #oldhollywoodglamour #tragichollywood #oldhollywood #hollywoodtragic #lucilleball #Ilovelucy #joancrawford

‘Mommie Dearest’ is a film based on the book of the same title written by Joan Crawford’s daughter, Christina Crawford. This film and the book it is based off of the story of how Joan Crawford behaved behind closed doors with her children, how she abused them, had crazy/wild outbursts, which sometimes turned violent. Faye Dunaway’s performance as Joan Crawford is fearless, brutal, raw, vulnerable, and unforgettable. Dunaway delivers a tour de force performance that is impossible to ignore. I found her character’s behaviors incredibly disturbing and terrifying but enthralling to watch. She goes from controlled charm to unhinged rage in seconds. The film itself is an excellent portrayal of the life of Hollywood glamor, and the consequences of being wrapped up in that lifestyle. The film print color, direction, sets, and music is great and worth watching. Has anyone seen this movie?! #fayedunaway #joancrawford #mommiedearest #filmreview #moviereview #movie #film #filmcatalysts

Joan Crawford recalling filming CHAINED (1934) with Clark Gable: “Clarence Brown was a fine, fine director, and I liked him. He knew what he wanted, but he liked to let us find our own way, and then he’d make suggestions. The only problem many of us had with him on CHAINED was how softly he spoke. I have always had very good hearing, but sometimes even I missed what he was saying. And Clark! Poor Clark. He couldn’t hear him at all. “We were supposed to stay on our marks, but he was back there behind the camera, and we couldn’t hear what he was saying. He was a real hearing test I have to say. Clark would go up to Mr. Brown and say, ‘what did you say?’ Or he’d turn to me and ask, ‘what did he say?’ During CHAINED, I remember Clark coming over to me, looking a little desperate. He had to step out of the lights in order to hear what our director had just said. “Clark whispered, “Did you hear what he said?” I said, no, I didn’t hear a word. That seem to make Clark very happy. He grinned that wonderful grin of his and whispered, “Thank God! I thought I’d gone deaf.’” #clarkgable #joancrawford #clarencebrown #1930s #1930shollywood #1930sfilm #oldhollywood #mgm #tcm #dearmrgablecom #classicfilms #vintagehollywood

Joan Crawford with some of her Charleston trophies in 1926, followed by her dancing in Sally, Irene and Mary (1925) and Our Dancing Daughters (1928) 💃 “One night, director Edmund Goulding saw [Michael Cudahy and I] at the Grove. He said that when I Charlestoned, it was as if I were intoxicated with joy. It was joy-I never touched liquor. I barely touched earth! “That girl’s under contract to us, isn’t she?” Mr. Goulding said. “Well, she’s a natural. She’s Irene.” I won over 100 cups for the Charleston. My new little flat on Ogden Drive was stuffed with trophies and silver cups, with woolly animals and dolls, the treasures of a child. Maybe I did play harder than anyone else-I worked harder, too. Perhaps because I had such an inferiority complex, because I was trying to compensate for all I lacked in education, poise and background. I wanted something out of life and this was the only way I knew to acquire it.” — excerpts from A Portrait of Joan (1962), Joan Crawford

The Story Of Esther Costello "" 1957 ' 💖💘💖 - terrible accident leaves Esther Costello (Heather Sears) blind, deaf, mute and without a mother. Living in squalor with her aunt in Ireland, Esther is rescued by a kind American, Margaret Landi (Joan Crawford). Margaret brings the girl back with her to Boston. There, Esther learns how to use sign language and blossoms into a lovely young woman. But her life darkens when Margaret's scheming husband, Carlo (Rossano Brazzi), comes back into the picture..... - Joan Crawford is a rich American socialite who, revisiting her Irish birthplace, finds a young girl, deaf, dumb and blind as a result of an explosion when she was a child. Joan rescues the girl from her evil surroundings, takes her to the US and devotes her life to the girl’s recovery. This mercy campaign sparks the interest of the world, but Crawford’s estranged husband (played by Rossano Brazzi) and a slick exploitation guy turn it into a giant racket. Apart from its gripping story, Esther Costello has an almost documentary quality in showing the patient way a mute can be taught to communicate with the world. So authentic are these scenes that Heather Sears, who portrays Esther, and Crawford as her tutor actually learned to ‘hand-talk’. #joancrawford #hollywoodmovies #makeup #classic #filmnoir #comeback #people #pepsi #wow #drama #blackandwhite #diva👑 #hollywoodlife #queen #me #performance #perfect #wonderful #beautiful #mood
