NAP TIME Poipu Beach in Kauai is known for its appearances of Hawaiian Monk Seals & Hawaiian Sea Turtles that come daily (typically in front of the lifeguard areas) to rest before they head back into the water. These animals have found refuge knowing that they are away from their marine predators and that these lifeguards/volunteers will help other people maintain 30 ft distance to protect their safety. Ive had the privilege of seeing both these animals come to the surface and enjoy their peaceful sleep in the warm sand. Fun fact: There are chickens roaming free all over Kauai. They frequent parking lots, strut their stuff on the beach, wander through restaurants and hang out by the pool. Where did they come from? There are many theories, but most locals will tell you that the first wave of feral chickens came over with the Polynesians over 1000 years ago. But more recently, Hurricanes Iwa and Iniki in the 1980’s and 90’s destroyed most of the island’s coops and blew chickens everywhere. So if you’re coming to the Kauai Writers Conference this November, get ready to see chickens and little chicks wherever you go!

These pictures and videos were taken at the end of the Shipwreck Beach Trail, known locally as the Mahaulepu Heritage Trail. The first and third pictures were taken of Mahaulepu Beach from a distance. The second is a video to capture the sound of the waves as well. Pictures 4-7 were taken at the Makauwaki Cave Reserve. I did include video to understand what it looks like because pictures don’t really capture the size of the cave and surrounding area. Yes you do have to crawl to get in there, but it’s not that bad. They close the cave if there is too much mud so don’t go there after a heavy rain. The remaining pictures 8-9 (picture and video) were taken at the nearby Tortoise exhibit that is free to enter. Kauai got some sunshine yesterday! I packed up a little picnic. Stopped at the quickie mart for a Kona Big Wave and to the beach we went! Ice cold liquid aloha and turkey and avocado sandwich went great together! We nearly had the beach to ourselves until this friendly guy came by. Happy aloha Friday! After weeks of rain and yucky weather, we got some sunshine these last few days! We got to spend an afternoon at Lydgate beach. Lydgate is a favorite. It’s popular with locals as well as visitors. It’s sandy beach is lined in coconut palms. There’s two boulder enclosed ponds, keeps big waves out and happy fish in.😁A shark found it’s way into the larger pond two years ago. Last photo shows one of the signs life guards posted. I think some folks were oblivious to it.😂Or just didn’t care…no worries, it was just a baby.😬 As I’m typing this, it started to rain again. It’s wet season! Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!
