Another week or two without a build but a rare look at the overall collection as well as an embarrassing view of the very messy Lego Room. These images show the vast majority of all the builds I have made over the years. Official Lego, sets from other other companies, My Own Creations, and the mess that is now the Workshop. The last image is *most* of the Official Lego sets I have not yet built, and four of the six 27-gallon black boxes contain parted out Lego for MOC's I have planned but never had the chance to build. Sadly, the Bad Batch Shuttle had a catastrophic stand failure and crashed nearly 6 feet to the ground shortly after that picture was taken. It took about 2 days to find all the parts and another day to put it back together. It's back on display, but on its landing gears and not in flight position. There was no real post for this week or last week. I, and Don, have been busy cleaning up and packing up the Workshop and Lego Room. For the time being, I took on "updating" the flatbed to my MOC of the Heavy Hauler. The first three images are the original version, which was omni directional rear loading, and weird upright connecting the boom arm to the flatbed. The last three images show that I made it front and rear loading with ramps on both ends, kept the boom arm (which I loved), and gave it a slope. This made it longer and slightly more accurate to any "real-life" flatbed. Don called the Crew into the Workshop this week and, at first, there is some confusion as the Saint Chamond is still in the shop. Don is there in waiting with a stack of packed crates. Don explains why he wasn't available for the last build. He had to work out some details over the future of the Workshop. Don announces that the Workshop is set to close and the operation is going to move. The hope is that they will be able to continue to build in the future, but it is unknown how long that may take as packing has begun, but a new home has not been found or built. For the time being as well as the near future, there may only be smaller builds completed and at a slower pace. Not to keep the mood down, Don states that he wanted everyone to enjoy some snacks and drinks while they find joy in the work they had done in the past. Don does ask everyone to keep hold of the bottle caps. It has been an incredibly tough time getting the entire Crew together this close to the holiday and end of the year. Luckily, everyone eventually makes it in. Mr. Manager gathers everyone together to review some preliminary work before the actual project. The Crew will have to break down a small portion of the Workshop for this next build. While taking some time to get ready for the next build, some changes were needed for the Workshop. I had about 8 of these 4 X 8's and each was removed carefully. The last one, THE LAST ONE, was in a spot that required the use of a separator, lest I remove a large section of the Workshop to get to it, and this happened. The Great War was the first war that made use of more closely to modernized weaponry but with old-world tactics. The war in Western Europe would quickly turn into a ground war stalemate, better known as trench warfare. The land between the opposition became known as “no-man’s land”. On the German defensive line, dubbed the “Hindenburg Line", an effective system of trenches with concrete bunkers and machine gun pillboxes made it difficult for soldiers to pass. As automobiles and trucks replaced the horse and carriage as the main form of transportation, the military staff car would be more common place during the war. Commonly, Commanders would use higher-end vehicles customized for their needs or desires. The choice vehicle for Kaiser Wilhelm II would be the 1916 Mercedes 16/40 or “Knight Tourer”. It was also seen as a state of the art vehicle for its time. For these reasons, it would lead other prominent German Commanders to make a similar choice. The name “Knight Tourer” was in reference to the vehicle’s utilization of a four-stroke Knight sleeve valve engine. The use of staff cars provided commanders with a quick and comfortable ride to and from the front. The commanding officer typically had a personal driver who was trained to drive and even trained to maintain the vehicle. Don and Ol' Man Gunderson are enjoying a quiet weekend. They spend the time to explain the importance of the Poppy Flower to Wall-E when suddenly, the doors bust open. A man and his driver have come into the Workshop with quite a displeased look. The man, dressed as a Great War German officer, identified himself as Ludwig Von Block and started the conversation with a stern voice over the lack of attention to the Central Powers of the Great War. Don explains there wasn't much to recreate and reminded Von Block of the A7V that was built some time ago. He also reminded them that it is was due for a cleaning. Don also adds that there is something in the works, but it may take a little time due to the size. He offers Von Block a German Concrete Machine Guns Pillbox painted to autumn camouflage. Von Block is pleased by the offer but asked how and why there was a prefabricated pillbox painted and sitting on pallets. Don quickly, yet sternly, asked if they were going to take it or ask stupid questions. Von Block agrees to take it but asks the next build to be done quickly. Don turns to Mr. Gunderson and says they may have to call in the entire Crew for this one. Also, something is going to have to change with the door. The Ordnance QF 13 pounder Mk III anti-aircraft gun, better known as 13 pounder 6 cwt, was an early British improvisation in The Great War to adapt the QF 13-pounder field gun for anti-aircraft use. This particular gun's performance was "ballistically poor" and it was only marginally effective against aircraft. This was primarily due to its low muzzle velocity. It was later relegated to minor war theatres. The 13 pounder 6 cwt would be replaced by the 13 pounder 9 cwt anti-aircraft gun which would become the standard mobile British anti-aircraft gun of The Great War, especially in theatres outside Britain. These cannons were usually deployed mounted on medium Lorries such as the Thornycroft Type J, which had a speed of 18 miles per hour. On the Western Front, they were typically used to protect troop columns, airfields, bases, supply dumps, and even observation balloons. As important as the performance of the gun itself was, new technology had to be developed to allow fast calculation of aircraft height and speed to predict where it would be when the shell arrived near it. Aircraft of the time could fly at over 100 miles per hour and up to 20,000 feet. Close to the end of the War, a 13 pounder AA Section was accompanied by trackers, a rangefinder, a Height/Fuze Indicator (HFI), and an identification telescope. By the end of The Great War, a total of 306 were in service worldwide, 232 of these on the Western Front. As from what I can find in my search, today there is only one surviving QF 13 pounder 9 cwt on a Mk III mounting on a Thornycroft J Type Lorry and it is located at Imperial War Museum Duxford, UK.
