Meet Maeve Korthuis, a 2024 exhibitor of the Junior Livestock Show of Spokane! 👋 Maeve has been showing for 7 years and is a sophomore at Lind-Ritzville. Her favorite thing about the show is the opportunity to compete at a higher level, the relationships gained through the show, and the satisfaction and payoff of raising cattle from start to finish. When asked what she is taking this year, she said, "My market steer, Biscotti and my prospect steer, Winston." Maeve is grateful for her role models and two specific ones come to mind. We chose Dancing Dottie; because she definitely is a dancing queen in the stanchion. She turned to me at one point and said she didn’t need my help. Vi Vi, as the girls call her, has become a herd favorite. She is the friendliest baby we’ve raised so far and loves all the attention. On November 4 some of the 4-H members went to dueling pianos to clean up dishes. It was gross but after we cleaned up the dishes we got to dance to the pianos and we rocked. .The next day our horse members went to ride at the Claresholm Agriplex. We got to have a new instructor. Agriculture, farming, homesteading, and other sustainable life skills are underserved in the homeschooling and alternative education community. This is funny because these communities are also the most conscientious of what we put into their bodies. What I found when we started homeschooling seven years ago was that there were no full-year agriculture curriculums available to homeschoolers. Agriculture is an amazing, multi-faceted applied science that includes almost every science discipline to some extent. It also has math, business, and a ton of other life skills! So, I was super disappointed that there wasn’t an agriculture science curriculum that I could grab and go to teach my kids. There were little kid color the cow curriculums and public high school commercial agriculture science textbooks that just didn’t resonate with my kids who were being raised on a small farm. I knew that with my background and passion, I was capable of and perfect for the job of creating a homeschool agriculture curriculum! It has been a non-stop few weeks, but I’m realizing I hadn’t posted anything about the @thebigefair Big E Llama Show. . JNK Sulu’s Legado was named Reserve Champion Non-Breeder and did great for his first time at a show. He placed in the top 1/3 of very large novice performance classes and gained some confidence attempting new things in new places. . LUA Bravado’s Harvest Moon (Dusty) earned his first Reserve Championship in Novice Performance and enjoyed the attention from hundreds (thousands?) of fairgoers. The icing on the cake was when he won the Novice Jackpot Obstacle class! He was such a willing (and a bit derpy) boy all weekend! . Christopher took Dusty in the ring for sub-junior obstacle and reminded us all how grown up he is already, now that he’s almost FIVE. . It's Pork & Poultry Wednesday! Today we are highlighting Mountainside Montessori School! The students there learn hands on what it is like taking care of the pigs (and other animals!) donated by American Heritage Farm! This year the school donated pork to the Fauquier Education Farm for their feast by the field annual dinner! The children also have had the opportunity to learn to cook the pork they've raised with the Owner of Field & Main restaurant, Neal Wavra! What a busy four days at the @thebigefair ! From Thursday afternoon through Saturday afternoon, Madison was part of the 4H Dairy Goat Program at the Big E with an amazing group of teens! She then stayed for the ADGA open show on Sunday. . In addition to an ADGA youth show on Saturday, they participated in fitting and showmanship competitions, educational workshops, quiz bowl, public outreach, ADGA milk test, and of course, a pizza party and an ice cream social! . She learned so much and couldn’t be more proud of her Saanen does. She can’t wait to come back next year! . DAVIS OHL SA MISSED ME, her home-bred 4 year old Saanen doe was awarded Champion Saanen and Best of Breed in both the youth ADGA show on Saturday and the open ADGA show on Sunday. She was also awarded best udder of breed in the open show. . MONTGOMERY PARK GEM was awarded Reserve Champion Saanen in the open show . Madison was honored to be awarded Saanen Premier Exhibitor in the open show. . She is tired but so happy! Someone asked me recently: Why bake bread and do so much canning when you can just buy it in a store? I could have said I do it for the health of my family, for the rewarding feeling of making something from nothing, as part of an effort to be more self sustainable, the satisfaction of a pantry full of jars, because it tastes better than store bought, or to save money. While all those are true, it's really just because I love to & it's how I show my love to others. Whether it is making supper for my family using homegrown ingredients, taking a new mom a meal, dropping off a basket of bread and a jar of jam at a friends or sending baking to my husbands coworkers just because. It brings me joy.
