KooneyKooney is not thrilled about this new development. His kind lived for many generations with the Mãori people of New Zealand. There is some debate over the arrival of the kunekune pig to the island. Kune's are not native to New Zealand and did not arrive on Mãori boats. The prevailing theory is that the pigs came with the wind. Sailboats. Pirates and whalers would be the likely chaufeurs. Was it Capt. Ahab or Capt. Cook? Nobody knows for sure. Kooney often accompanies me on errands. On this day, our mission is to get a couple of buckets of brackish water for some of our aquatic turtles, and fingers crossed, get our boat to start. In winter, I like to photograph the seals, migratory ducks, peregrine falcons, and bald eagles out on Long Island Sound. Unfortunately, Kooney can not get in and out of the boat but loves the beach and hanging around the dock and marina. Kooney and I went down to the Long Island Sound today to start up the boat and get some brackish water for some of our turtles. Walking Kooney at the marina is good for exercise but also helps to keep his hooves worn down, limiting the number of pedicures he requires. After morning programs at The Children's School, in Greenwich, Kooneykooney and I took advantage of our proximity to Long Island Sound and went to explore Todd's Point. The birds in the first photograph are brandt geese, with NYC in the background. They are down from the Arctic for winter. Fishing just off shore was a common loon. Kooney is not unique among pigs in his lack of interest in cold, wet, rainy, or snowy days. On Sundays such as these, we often pack up the boys, Maku, and pig brother Kooney, and head out for an adventure. On this particular Sunday, that took us to Sherman Ct., to the Pie Company for brunch, and then to Tractor Supply. Sherman felt and looked just like winter should. Looks like polar bear country, Manitoba, but we are just on the outskirts of the Shawanagunk Grassland Preserve in Walkill, NY. The preserve is a great place to find and photograph short eared owls. Short ears are diurnal, so they hunt during the day. Kooney and I find some interesting and beautiful places. Last week, after teaching at a school on the other side of the Hudson, we decided to come home by way of the Bear Mountain Bridge. The views of the river and Hudson Highlands are spectacular. Cheaper toll, too:) I hoped we might find a cool new park along the Hudson for Kooney and I to stretch our legs and explore. I have been working hard to eradicate introduced, invasive species on our property. Now, to replace them with natives. Kooney helps when he can. He is particularly good at helping to select plants. He is a bit of a connoisseur. Our mission today is to get a male winterberry plant to pollinate the three females we planted in the fall. We planted two winter red and one little goblin. Kooney and I purchased two, well, actually four winterberry plants today. The variety name is "spritely couple"...the male and female were planted together. Yesterday, Kooney and I went to visit Ward Pound Ridge Reservation. My friend and naturalist Jim Kenyon had tipped us off to some recent beaver activity in the wetland area at the end of Michigan Road. We happened to park in front of this oak tree. The beaver has girtled the tree, stripping the bark around the circumference of the trunk. Kooney has a positive association with schools in general, but Riverside is special. For me, it is the twenty years of enrichment programming I have provided the school. For Kooney, it is because the school is surrounded by a grove of oak trees, and he loves acorns. Many of the teachers recall when Kooney discovered his first food truck and got stuck at a Mexican one parked in front of the school. The food truck was a way of saying thank you to the teachers. kooney has helped me to find lots of cool new places and to reconnect with old favorites. It has been years since I visited Kosciusko Park in the south end of Stamford. Like the south end, the park has been transformed. Nestled on a peninsula that juts out into the Stamford Harbor, the park offers beautiful views of the Sound, accesed by a walkway, but Kooney's favorite part was the meadow walk and the crab apple tree. We've stumbled on a great way to safely allow kids to feed Kooney. Each child adds their choice of pre cut fruits or veggies to the pan of water, and Kooney snorkels them out. Kooney will visit the children at Lavelle this spring, so piggy had this morning off. After "grazing" all morning, we went to The Wolf Conservation Center, where Maku works. Eagle hunting in Verplank NY along the Hudson River with Maku and brother Kooney.
