While only present in isolated areas, it’s always fun to come upon Heart-leaf Milkweed (Asclepias cordifolia) in bloom, especially with the prospect of finding a Monarch caterpillar [they eat the leaves which contain cardiac glycosides, poisonous to most mammals and birds, a protection against predation]. On Friday 4/19/2024, I lead a walk at Stebbins Cold Canyon for the UC Natural Reserve System, and yes, the wildflowers are in abundance! But today’s post is a reminder to all who wish to visit that in addition to being an outstanding wildflower hotspot and being part of the University of California’s Natural Reserve System, there are a few animals there that one should be very respectful of, especially when bringing children, even to a trail as seemingly safe as the Homestead Trail. Do you have a destination you have been wanting to go and take photos of? Why? “Again, it is difficult to pick a favourite place. I feel all the places have impacted me in some way. If I had to choose, the place where I grew up would become astonishingly beautiful during the monsoon. I love shooting there whenever I get a chance. The place is full of farms and small hills in the background. Monsoons are an important time for Indian crops, so people work on their farms during this time. The whole scene becomes very dynamic with dark moving clouds, thunderous rain and working people. What helped you make that jump? “It was my first trip when I was in college and the first trip with my newly bought camera. Also, it was the first time I experienced snowfall. I was terribly ill-prepared, I did not do any research and did not pack according to the conditions. I was completely drenched from the moment I set foot in the destination and the cold was bitter, the kind of bitter that I experienced for the first time and it was hurting. Soon I could not feel my legs. But as soon as I saw a potential scene, set up the tripod and started the process of making a shot, the pain magically disappeared. This blew my mind, I was experiencing all these plethora of emotions for the first time, everything seemed to me in symphony and then I knew this was what I wanted to do. What do you like about the gear that you use? “Currently, I have the Sony A7III with 16-35 F4 and 70-200 F4. It has been a journey till this setup. As an enthusiast, I started making pictures with my mother’s phone. It was fun to make pictures with the 2MP camera. My friends and I went on local hiking trails and that camera was a tool we could use to document our trip. Gradually, the smartphone came along with improved quality. Then I switched over to a Sony point-and-shoot camera for a few years. In my last year of college, I got my first DSLR, the Sony A58. My editing process is simple. Who and/or what inspires you now along your journey and why? “I grew up in nature, surrounded by forests, so it has always been my inspiration and solace.
